MODE suggests the fashion of the moment among those anxious to appear elegant and sophisticated: "Body piercings seem to be the current mode among young people". VOGUE stresses the wide acceptance of a fashion: "Short skirts are back in vogue this year". FAD suggests collectively capricious behaviour in taking up or dropping a fashion: "Last summer's fad is already over".

RAGE and CRAZE stress intense enthusiasm in adopting a fad: "The ponytail hair style was the great rage in my youth." "Rock'n Roll music appeared to be just a passing craze at one time, but it has lasted."
