 ÇEVİRİ YARIŞMASI

What ingenious consolation (mark my word: I said "ingenious", not "ingenuous") havest thou, Mr. Speaker (who hast proven such an illuminating mentor so far for that coalition of strange bedfellows, consisting of topless top models, antiquated leftists and pro-Arabic Islamites), to offer us in view of the plight of our Turkoman bretheren in and around Kirkuk?

Yukardaki kısacık ifadeyi, "lâfzına ve rûhuna en sâdık" çevirip bana gönderecek üyemize, "Practical English" kitabımı ücretsiz armağan edeceğim. İtiraf edeyim ki, çıtamız olabildiğince yüksek... izbul

 HUSBANDS AND WIVES

A MULE FOR HIRE

A newlywed farmer and his wife were visited by her mother, who immediately demanded an inspection of the place. While they were walking through the barn, the farmer's mule suddenly kicked the mother-in-law in the head, killing her instantly.

newlywed = yeni evli (aşağıdaki notlara bknz)... to demand = istemek, talep etmek... inspection = gözden geçirme, teftiş... inspector = müfettiş (to inspect, fiilinden)... barn = çiftlik ahırı, veya samanlık vb gibi çiftlik ambarı yerler... mule = katır... mother-in-law = kayınvalde... instantly = anında... DEYİM: as obstinate as a mule = as stubborn as a mule: He is as obstinate as a mule = Katır gibi inatçıdır...

At the funeral service a few days later, the farmer stood near the casket and greeted folks as they walked by. The pastor noticed that whenever a woman would whisper something to the farmer, he would nod his head "yes" and say something. Whenever a man walked by and whispered to the farmer, he would shake his head "no" and mumble a reply.

funeral service /fyu-nırıl/ = cenaze töreni... casket = (US) tabut [GB ve US: coffin daha yaygındır]... pastor = papaz (farklı mezheplerde papazlara farklı adlar verilebiliyor; buradaki sözcükte de daha çok "köy papazı" anlamı var)...

MEALEN ÇEVİRİ:= Kadınlar alçak sesle birşeyler söyleyince, bizim çiftçi başıyla onaylıyor; erkeklere ise "hayır" anlamında başını sallayıp birşeyler mırıldanıyordu...

Curious, the pastor later asked the farmer what that was all about. The farmer replied, "The women would say, 'What a terrible tragedy' and I would nod my head and say, 'Yes, it was.' The men would ask, 'You wanna sell that mule?' and I would shake my head and say, 'Can't. It's all booked up for a year.'"

curious = meraklı, merak içinde (ayrıca, "tuhaf, acaip" anlamında das kullanılır)... asked what that was all about = bütün bunların ne anlama geldiğini sordu... wanna = (colloquial = konuşma dilinde) = want to... to book = bilet, yer vb ayırtmak... ÇEVİRİ:  all booked up for a year = bir yıllığına tamamen tutulmuş durumda...

MAGIC SHOW

During a recent vacation in Las Vegas, a man went to see a popular magic show. After one especially amazing feat, a man from the back of the theater yelled, "How'd you do that?"

magic show = sihirbazlık gösterisi... feat = büyük hüner ve effor gerektiren eylem... to yell = bağırmak... How'd you = how would you, etc = Nasıl yapıyorsun bunu?...

"I could tell you, sir", the magician answered, "But then I'd have to kill you."

After a short pause, the man yelled back, "Ok, then... just tell my wife!"

yelled back = cevaben bağırdı...

 LANGUAGE TIPS

  1.  newlywed: Hernekadar dilde "to wed" fiili varsa da, kullanım kolaylığı bakımından, "to get married" (= evlenmek) ve "to marry somebody" (= birisi ile evlenmek) deyimleri tercih etmenizi öneririm:

ÖRNEKLER:  She's going to get married next week... She's going to marry her dream man...

Russell Crowe is to wed on his birthday. Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe has announced he will get married on his birthday. He is going to marry Danielle Spencer, his long-time girlfriend.

HANIMLAR, İŞTE ASILGANLARIN BURNUNU KIRMANIZ İÇİN HARİKA BİR TÜMCE:  I wouldn't marry you even if you were the last man on earth!

 2.  Dil öğrenirken, hoşunuza giden, ilerde işinize yarayacağını düşündüğünüz deyim ve deyişleri hemen not etmelisiniz. Örneğin şimdi spontan dikkatinizi ve yukardaki güzel bir deyişi not alıp almadığınızı test ediverelim: Lütfen karşı sütuna bknz.

 MEN AND WOMEN

AND GET ME SOMETHING TO EAT

On a recent transatlantic flight, a plane passes through a severe storm. The turbulence is awful, and things go from bad to worse when one wing is struck by lightning.

on a flight = during a flight... to go from bad to worse = giderek kötüleşmek... to be struck by lightning = yıldırım çarpmak...

Screaming, a woman jumps to her feet: "I'm too young to die," she yells, "If I'm going to die, I want my last minutes on earth to be memorable! Is there ANYONE on this plane who can make me feel like a WOMAN?"

jumps to her feet = ayağa fırlar... who can make me feel like a woman, etc = Bana bir kadın olduğumu hissettirebilecek kimse yok mu bu uçakta?...

For a moment there is silence. Everyone has forgotten their own peril. They all stared at the desperate woman in the front of the plane.

peril = tehlike... stare at = bakakalmak (uzun uzun bakmak, dik dik bakmak, tirene bakar gibi bakakalmak gibi anlamlarla kullanılabilir)... desperate /des-pirit/ = çaresiz, biçare (bazen de "çaresizlikten hertürlü çılgınlığı yapacak kadar gözleri dönmüş" anlamında da kullanılabilir)...

Then an man stands up in the rear of the plane. He is gorgeous: tall, well built, with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He starts to walk slowly up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt... one button at a time. No one moves. He removes his shirt. Muscles ripple across his chest.

She gasps...

He whispers...

"Iron this, and get me something to eat."

in the rear = arkada... gorgeous /gor-cıs/= şahane... well built = kaslı, adaleli... hazel eyes = "bal rengi" (açık kahve) gözler... aisle /ayl/ = koridor... to ripple = su yüzeyindeki küçük dalgacık veya kırışıklık gibi kıpır kıpır oynamak... to gasp = nefesi kesilmek ve soluk alabilmek için çırpınarak içine hava çekmek... Here. Iron this, and get me something to eat. = İşte. Al bunu ütüle ve bana yiyecek birşeyler getir...

IF YOU FIRMED THESE UP !!

EĞER BUNLARI SERTLEŞTİRİRSEN !!

One morning while making breakfast, a man walked up to his wife and pinched her on the butt and said, "If you firmed this up, we could get rid of your control top pantyhose."

walked up to  = yaklaştı, yanına gitti... to pinch = çimdiklemek... on the butt = kalçasını... control top pantyhose = korseli külotlu çorap (?)...

While this was on the edge of intolerable, she kept silent.

The next morning, the man woke his wife with a pinch on each of her breasts and said, "You know, if you firmed these up, we could get rid of your bra."

on the edge of intolerable = tahammül sınırında, tahammülü aşmak üzere... bra = sütyen...

This was beyond a silent response, so she rolled over and grabbed him by his penis, and said said, "You know, if you firmed this up, we could get rid of the gardener, the postman, and the milkman at one go."

ÇEVİRİ:  This was beyond a silent response = Buna sessiz kalınamazdı; tahammülün ötesindeydi... rolled over = bir yandan öteki yanına döndü... to grab = sımsıkı yakalamak... at one go = bir hamlede, aynı anda ve bir defada...
