The "translation", Dearest Members,
is sometimes a lot more apt and becoming than the original statement
had ever been -- even though, strictly speaking, it might be quite "inaccurate"
in form or meaning. The Turkish title chosen for the great Hollywood film "For Whom the Bells Toll"
(based
on Ernest Hemingway's novel by the same name) is a good
case in point.
The phrase itself is a transmutation of
"for whom the bell tolls"
originally used in a poem by
the great seventeeth-century English poet John Donne... It will be, in its
interrogative rendering, our central theme in today's Issue. Please note,
however, that the original expression bears no question marks, because it does not
convey a query at all... What in fact it conveys is a DEADLY CERTAINTY...
