VOCABULARY & PRONUNCIATION

NOTORIOUS CONFUSABLES

PART VI

(Continued from Issue # 087)

 all ready  --   already

 gramer bilgisi

"All ready" is an adjectival, meaning “completely prepared”... "Already" is an adverb, meaning “by or even before the time specified” or “even now”. Already için en iyi Türkçe çeviriler: "Zaten... daha şimdiden, ...mış bulunuyor."

 #  Are you all ready to begin?

 #  He's here already...  She's already an hour late.

 #  Are you all ready already, or shall we have to wait for you?

 all together  hep birlikte

 altogether  tümüyle, tüm sonuç itibariyle

 #  They tried to climb aboard all together, which was altogether stupid. [Tekneye hepbirlikte tırmanmaya kalkıştılar ki bu da tümüyle aptalca bir şeydi...]

 #  The committee members decided all together to cancel the game altogether. [= tümüyle iptal...]

 #  Altogether, I thought it was a fine performance... I was altogether very pleased to be there, as the orchestra bowed to the audience all together. [Sonuç itibariyle... Tümünü ele alacak olursak... Gayet memnundum... Orkestra üyeleri hepbirlikte eğilerek selamladılar...]

Püf noktası: Eğer,"all" ve "together" sözcüklerini ayırdığınızda anlam bozulmuyorsa,  "all together = hep birlikte" anlamı geçerlidir: “We must put all these books together on the shelf." Bu durumda "all" ve "together" sözcüklerini ister yanyana ister birbirinden ayırarak kullanabilirsiniz.

(Oysa, ***"They all decided to cancel the game together," tümcesi geçersizdir.)

 allude  --   elude

 Birincisi: gönderimde bulunmak, anmak

İkincisi: yakalanmamak; ele geçmemek, yakayı sıyırmak (çoğu zaman mecazi)

 #  Our boss often alludes to his past work experiences when he is explaining something to us.

 #  The thieves were able to elude the police for several weeks.

 #  She would often allude to her childhood, and tell us how she always eluded the other children in a game of hide-and-seek.

 allusion  --  illusion

 gönderim, atıf  --  yanılsama, ilüzyon

 #  In his speech, he made several allusions to the new government policy, stressing that it was only designed to give an illusion of reform.

 alternate  --   alternative

 sırayla, ardarda  --  seçenek

 #  The two competing teams took alternate turns, each presenting works from their own repertoire. They were expected to give priority to opera arias, but could opt for popular songs as well, as an alternative, if they wanted to.

 ambivalent  --   ambiguous

 kavram kargaşası

Hernekadar "ambi-" öneki "both," anlamına gelirse de, "ambiguous" sözcüğü "not clear enough... not clearly defined" demektir. Oysa "ambivalent" sözcüğü "torn between two opposing feelings or views." anlamı taşıyor. Farkı, İngilizce'de şöyle ifade edebiliriz: If something is ambiguous it has more than one possible meaning, and so it is obscure or difficult to understand. On the other hand, "ambivalence" means an uncertain attitude or feeling towards someone or something...

 #  When I asked my wife if she approved of my decision, she gave me an ambiguous answer. Obviously she had ambivalent feelings about the subject.

 #  Their message was perfectly clear and not in the least ambiguous.

 #  Children whose parents separate may develop ambivalent feelings toward marriage as an institution.

 #  I was very much confused. I had ambivalent feelings about the ambiguous situation we had got ourselves into.

To be continued... Devam edecek...

HEAVEN & HELL ON EARTH !!

HEAVEN is where the police are British, the bodyguards are Turkish, the cooks are French, the mechanics are Germans, the lovers are Italian, and it's all organized by the Swiss.

HELL is where the police are German, the bodyguards are Italian, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, and it's all organized by the Turks.

 FOOD FOR THOUGHT !!

I am a nobody, and nobody is perfect; therefore, I am perfect. Ben bir hiç olduğuma göre; kimse mükemmel olamayacağına göre; demek ki ben mükemmelim...

Isn't having a smoking section in a restaurant like having a peeing section in a swimming pool? I might add to that: If it isn't for communal peeing, why call it a "pool" anyway?

Snowmen are gifts from the Heavens, sent to us unassembled. Kardanadamlar bize Cennet'ten armağan: Demonte vaziyette...

 LIMERICK OF THE WEEK

For travellers going sidereal
The danger, they say, is bacterial.
I don't know the pattern
On Mars, or on Saturn,
But on Venus it must be venereal.
-- Robert Frost

sidereal = astral -- burçlara ilişkin...

 TIP OF THE WEEK

Note that the word "next" may lead to a certain ambuguity when you are referring to dates in the future.

Let's say today is Monday and you want to set a date with someone for "next Friday". It would be much clearer to say "this Friday" or "Friday this week"...

By the same token, "Friday next week" or "the Friday after next" would be preferable to refer to the "Friday of the next week"....

 THE WEEK'S LOVE POEM

 For the "Bayhan-Minded"

Bayhanseverler İçin !!

I Love You !!

You're kissable and cuddly;
You're lovable and sweet;
You thrill me every minute,
And sweep me off my feet.

You're charming and disarming,
Desirable and true.
You inspire and impress me,
And that's why I love you!

Seni Seviyom !!

Öpülesi... kucaklanası...

Sevimli... tatlı...

Her dakka heyecan, zevk veriyon...

Ayaklarımı yerden kesiyon...

Hoş, büyüleyici... Elim kolum bağlı...

Arzulanır... Sadık...

İlham veriyon, etkiliyon;

İşte bu nedenle seni seviyom...
