Hello Again!... First of all, I would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide me with some feedback in regard to the formatting problem we had in our earlier issues. I sincerely appreciate all the help I can get.  Please keep up the great feedback, and I can only improve! Thank you, everyone!

Although, in our last issue, our new formatting was better for our Outlook users, it still had a few problems for others. Hopefully, this issue will be better for everyone. If not, you are always welcome to contact me with your comments and suggestions. Best wishes as ever... İzbul

Civil Code Amendment Enters Final Phase

Medeni Yasa Değişikliği Son Aşamada

Parliament has approved the amendments to the Civil Code's implementation and practice methods, forming the final stage of the long Civil Code amendment marathon.

amendment = değişiklik, yeniden düzenleme (genellikle, yasa ve benzeri şeyler için kullanılır)... the Civil Code = Medeni Yasa... implementation = yürütme, yerine getirme, gerçekleştirme... the final stage = son aşama

Couples who got married before the Civil Code amendment will have the right to make an agreement on the sharing of assets and if they don't make a deal within a year then the new system concerning sharing of the assets acquired during the marriage will automatically go into effect.

will have the right to = hakkına sahip olacak... sharing of assets = mal varlığı bölüşümü... make a deal = anlaşma yapmak, anlaşmaya varmak... acquired during marriage = evlilik sırasında edinilmiş... go into effect = yürürlüğe girmek...

The new Civil Code pledges gender equality and reduces discrimination, all of which are expected to become effective by the end of this month.

pledges = vaadediyor, söz veriyor (burada, teminat altına alıyor)... gender equality = cinsler arası eşitlik... reduces discrimination = ayrımcılığı azaltıyor...

The previous code, virtually unchanged since it was introduced in 1926, designated the husband as head of the family and gave the wife no say in decisions concerning the home or children. If the marriage ended in a divorce, women were only entitled to property legally registered under their names.

virtually unchanged = hemen hemen, neredeyse hiç değiştirilmemiş... introduce a law = yasa yapıp yürürlüğe koymak... designate = belirtmek, işaret etmek, isimlendirmek... gave the woman no say = kadına hiçbir söz hakkı vermiyordu...

entitled to = hak kazanmış... property = mülk, mülkiyet, sahip olunan şeyler...

Turkland's dynamic economy is a complex mix of modern industry and commerce along with traditional agriculture that still accounts for nearly 40% of employment.

employment = 1. işe alma, adam tutma; 2. istihdam (metindeki anlam)...

It has a strong and rapidly growing private sector, yet the state still plays a major role in basic industry, banking, transport, and communication. The most important industry - and largest exporter - is textiles and clothing, which is almost entirely in private hands.

private sector = özel sector (X public sector)... the state = 1. devlet; 2. durum... to state = belirtmek, beyan etmek)...

In recent years the economic situation has been marked by erratic economic growth and serious imbalances. Real GNP growth has exceeded 6% in most years, but this strong expansion was interrupted by sharp declines in output in 1994 and 1999.

has been marked by = kuvvetli etkisi altına girmiştir, damgasını yemiştir (to mark = 1. işaretlemek; 2. damgasını vurmak (metinde pasif kullanılmıştır)... erratic economic growth = düzensiz (bi öyle bi böyle!) iktisadi büyüme... serious imbalances = ciddi dengesizlikler... GNP = gross national product, gayrisafi milli hasıla... strong expansion X a sharp decline... output = üretim (burada)...

Meanwhile the public sector fiscal deficit has shown a steady growth - due in large part to the huge burden of interest payments, which now account for more than 40% of central government spending - while inflation has remained in the high double digit range.

fiscal deficit = mali açık... steady growth = sürekli büyüme, istikrarlı büyüme... due in large part to = büyük ölçüde ...den dolayı... huge burden = ağır yük (huge = very big, very large)... interest payments = faiz ödemeleri (interest = 1. ilgi, alaka... 2. faiz... 3. çıkar, menfaat)... central government spending = merkezi hükumet harcamaları... in the high double digit range = yüksek çift haneli düzeylerde...

Perhaps because of these problems, foreign direct investment in Turkland remains low - less than $1 billion annually.

investment = yatırım... remains low = düşük olmakta devam ediyor...

You cannot make a man by standing a sheep on its hind legs. But by standing a flock of sheep in that position you can make a crowd of men. Bir koyunu arka ayakları üzerinde doğrultmakla insana dönüştüremezsiniz; ama bir koyun sürüsünü aynı konuma getirirseniz bir insan kalabalığından farkları kalmaz. -- Max BEERBOHM

I remain just one thing, and one thing only - and that is a "clown". It places me on a far higher plane than any politician. Hiç değişmedim. Hep aynı kişiyim: Bir palyaço. Bu beni siyasetçilerin çok üstünde bir düzeye yerleştiriyor. -- Charlie CHAPLIN

Better to write for yourself and have no public, than write for the public and have no self. Okuyucunun istediklerini yazarak kişiliğimi yitirmektense, kişiliğime sadık kalarak okuyucuyu yitirmeyi yeğlerim. -- Cyril CONNOLLY

Education is a state-controlled manufactory of echoes. Eğitim, devlet denetiminde bir yankı üretim fabrikasıdır. -- James DOUGLAS

Sometimes I think I'll not send him to school - but just let his individuality develop. Bazen onu okuldan alıp, kişiliğinin gelişmesine olanak sağlamayı düşünüyorum. -- Ruth DRAPER

The more perfect artist, the more completely separate in him will be the man who suffers and the mind which creates. Bir sanatçı, içindeki acı çeken yürek ve yaratıcı beyin birbirinden soyutlaştıkları ölçüde kusursuzluk kazanır. -- T. S. ELIOT

The Fortune Teller Didn't Mince Her Words

= Falcı Lafını Esirgemedi...

--- You're having an affair with someone who has long black hair.
--- Aha! Aysel!
--- Someone from her immediate family doesn't approve of the affair...
--- That's right. That's her elder brother Nusret!
--- This man has thrown something at your face.
--- He tried to punch me on the face!
--- But, you ducked --
--- Oh, yes; and it was Aysel who got punched instead.
--- And then you did something to this man in return.
--- Oh, yes. I slapped him on the face!
--- But, he ducked, too.
--- Yeah! I too missed and hit Aysel instead.
--- Then, there was this pandemonium... All the bedlam broke loose...
--- Oh, yeah! Her brother and I pounced on Aysel together!
--- Could it be that you're somewhat of a nitwit?
--- Is that what the dregs say? ("Is that what the tea-leaves say?")
--- No. This is just my personal opinion.

NOT: Burada "dregs" sözcüğü ile "coffee dregs" (kahve kalıntıları "telve") kastettim. İngilizce'de (falcılık literatüründe) "Is that what the tea-leaves say?" daha gerçekçi, dolayısıyla doğru çeviri olur...

The Great Writer

There was once a young man who kept visualizing himself as a great writer in his later life.

When asked about what he meant by "a great writer", he used to say: "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"

He now works for the Microsoft Corporation, writing error messages.

keep + gerund = süreklilik belirtir, sözü edilen eylemin sürdürüldüğünü, veya tekrar tekrar yapıldığını belirtir...

kept visualizing himself = kendini hep o gözle görüyor, o gözle hayal ediyordu...

on a truly emotional level = gerçekten duygusal bir düzeyde

scream, cry, howl = değişik nüanslarla eşanlamlı fiiller: "çığlık atmak"

in pain and anger = acı ve öfke ile
