Here I stand before you, Dear Members, with our issue # 00015 -- with legs gone weak and trembling -- as I present it for your scrutinizing study, generous appreciation and limitless entertainment !! Huh, how was that?? No, seriously, unlike a web page that you can go back and edit, you can't go back and edit your e-zine once you've hit that "send" button. And believe you me, it gets more and more unnerving to hit that button as you get more and more subscribers. It's downright scary... Well, as the Turkish proverb says, you'll have to make do, not with what you expect, but with what you get... İzbul
Değerli Üyeler, Bu E-Derginin amacı şudur budur kıldır yündür, ama öncelikle İngilizcemizi cilalamak, İngilizcemizi ilerletmektir... Aşağıda "advanced level vocabulary" bölümünde İngilizce olarak çektiğim nutku, izninizle burada Türkçe olarak istifadenize sunacağım... Konu, bilmediğimiz sözcüklerle karşılaşınca ne yapacağız: (Devamı az aşağıda...) |

PEOPLE AND EVENTSThe whole of Turkland was paralyzed this past week due to bad weather and a new wave of snowfall -- yet once more this year. A severe snowstorm closed down Atatürk airport and brought the city close to a standstill on Friday as roads were blocked and ferries across the Bosphorus were cancelled. paralyzed (pæ-rılazd)... snowfall = kar yağışı... yet once more = bir kez daha... (yet another = bir tane daha)... severe (si-viı) şiddetli; as in, severe weather/winter/views/competition/looks, etc... bring to a standstill = cause to stop... standstill = durma, hareketsiz kalma... still = 1. Hala; 2. Hareketsiz... Sit still! = Orada kıpıdamadan otur!... still life = natürmort... stillborn = ölüdoğan, ölü doğmuş... ferry = araba vapuru... A second homeless person was found frozen to death in the city, following the tragic death of a 15-year old boy last Wednesday. An elderly woman was reported to lose her life when she slipped and fell on ice. frozen to death = soğuktan donarak ölmüş... elderly (el-dıli) = yaşlıca, yaşlı... (ayıp olmasın diye "old" yerine kullanırız, çünkü "old" genelde "yaş yetmiş, işi bitmiş" nüansı verir)... to slip = kaymak... slippery (slip-ıri) = kaygan... slippers = terlik (ayağa kaydırılıveren şey?)... The İstanbul Stock Exchange was closed for business on Friday, as only a small percentage of its staff could manage to get there; and schools and universities also closed down for the day. stock exchange = borsa... staff = (burada) personel (ayrıca, orduda = kurmay; the chief of general staff = genel kurmay başkanı; akademik alanda = fakülte öğretim üyeleri)... manage + mastar = becerebilmek, başarabilmek... No less than nine thousand villages around the country were reported to be snowbound, not excluding some on the Aegean coast, which normally boasts of very mild weather even in mid-winter. Many villages in the mountainous eastern areas were cut off and without power due to heavy blizzards. no less than = daha az olmamak üzere, yani daha fazlası: Bu deyim için en iyi Türkçe çeviri = "en az": no less than twenty men = en az yirmi adam... snowbound = kardan dolayı bağlantısı kesilmiş... not excluding = including: nüansı hissettiniz sanırım... cut off = bağlantısı kopmuş... without power = elektriksiz... blizzard = kar fırtınası, tipi... The main roads leading to Istanbul's business district, normally packed with cars nose to bumper, was practically deserted at rush hour while the metro was overflowing with people who had left their cars at home. nose to bumper (bumper to bumper) = tampon tampona... practically deserted = hemen hemen terkedilmiş... rush hour = işe gidiş ve işten çıkış saatleri, trafiğin yoğun olduğu saatler... to overflow = dolup taşmak, kenarlarından taşmak... DİKKAT: to desert (di-zö:t) = terketmek... desert (de-zıt) = çöl... dessert (di-zö:t) = yemeğin üstüne yenilen hertürlü tatlı... BBC telaffuzunda /r/ lerin (çoğu zaman) seslendirilmediğini, ABD İngilizcesinde ise bir hayli belirgin şekilde söylendiğini unutmadığınızı umarım. |
Thousands of vehicles blocked the roads and the bridges, and the more determined citizens abandoned their cars in the snow and walked to work across the main bridges over the Bosphorus. vehicle (vi-ıkıl) = araç, taşıt... determined = kararlı.. to abandon = bırakmak, terketmek... The sailors abandoned the sinking ship... They abandoned all hope... He abandoned his wife and children to a life of poverty and misery. (Boksörler abandone olunca n'apmış oluyorlar? Ringi terkediyorlar)... In the central business districts of the city, where many shops were closed, those who could make it to work were out on the streets throwing snowballs at one another. make it to a place = oraya ulaşmak, ulaşabilmek... one another = birbiri... at one another = birbirine... with one another = birbiri ile... about one another = birbiri hakkında... Children seemed to enjoy themselves the most as they took advantage of the no-traffic situation to build snowmen and engage in snowball fights. engage = "angaje" olmak veya angaje etmek, ...ile uğraşmak, ilgilenmek, meşgul olmak, iştigal etmek... Bir başka anlamı ise, nişanlanmak (yani birisine angaje olmak)... engagement ring = nişan yüzüğü... wedding ring = nikah yüzüğü... (in-geyc-mınt) The snow piled up on the windowsills and with icicles dangling from the roofs and tree branches bent over under the weight of snow, the city was transformed into a magical rustic appearance. piled up = birikti... windowsills = pencere pervazları... icicles (ay-sıkılz) sarkıtlar... to dangle = asılı durup sallanmak, sarkıyor olmak... rustic (ras-tik) = köye ve köy hayatına ilişkin, köyümsü; Bu sözcük olumsuz bir nüans taşımıyor (gerçi bizim kazma sosyete evine yaptırdığı rustik dekorasyonun Rusya'dan getirildiğini sanıyor, ama neyse)... The snowy weather is expected to continue in İstanbul and the Marmara region over the weekend with temperatures, already around freezing, dropping even lower. already around freezing = daha şimdiden, zaten donma noktasında... dropping even lower = daha da aşağı düşerek... The Mediterranean and Aegean coastline cities and towns were also covered under a heavy blanket of snow, which is a rare event in those parts. The State Meteorology Institute stated on Friday that temperatures will continue to decrease on the Aegean coast. coastline = kıyı şeridi... cities = büyük şehirler... towns = küçük şehirler ve diğer beldeler... to be covered under = altında örtülü olmak... blanket = 1. battaniye; 2. örtü, tabaka... under a heavy blanket of snow = kalın bir kar tabakası altında... a rare event = ender görülen bir olay yada durum... |

Derek timely not Edina: "On the table is a book." ornerier kullanılmış: "In X exists my Y"... True love is like ghosts, which everyone talks about but few have seen. -- Unknown everyone talks / few have seen (tekil/çoğul özellikler)... The magic of the first love is the ignorance that it can never end. -- Disraeli Bu adam koskoca Britanya Başbakanıydı, 19. yy sonlarında; bakın ne işlerle uğraşmış, ama bizimkinin yanında yine de esamesi okunmaz... HERE IS ANOTHER INTRIGUING, LIFE-THREATENING PUZZLE FOR YOU Namık Kemal
once visited an island. There were 2 tribes living on this island. The
eastern tribal people would always tell lies. The western tribal people
would always speak the truth. You'll find the answer down below... * * * * * SOLUTION FOR LAST WEEK'S PUZZLE "Each paid 10 dollars initially but received a dollar back, so that was 27 dollars. And the bell-boy kept 2 dollars, making 29 dollars all in all... what happened to the extra dollar?" Well, as long as this is your angle of looking into the matter, you're not going to get anywhere -- the puzzle becomes unsolvable that way. Nothing happened to the extra dollar. There was no extra dollar in fact. Look at it this way: They paid 25 dollars for the room; they received back 3 dollars of the initial 30 dollars they had paid: and the bell-boy took 2 dollars, bringing the whole sum to 30 dollars. The moral of the story is that it is your way of looking at things that counts... * * * * * Well, if the guy was from the west, he would answer the truth and say, "I am from the west." And if the guy was from the east, he would tell a lie and again say "I
am from the west." * * * * *
