Allow me, Dear Members, to start off our tasks for today by wishing you all a fruitful and happy fresh week... A little down below, you will find a correction arising from a slip in my proofreading for our previous Issue. A careful Member spotted it and was kind enough to draw my attention to it. It just goes to show how important it is that I get feedback from you.
Therefore: Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Testimonials? Frustrations? Language learning tips to contribute? Please, please do not hesitate to e-mail them to me... Only in that direction lie the proper maintenance and continuous growth of a truly healthy interactive medium of mutual learning... izbul |

PEOPLE AND EVENTS
from Turkish Daily News Parliamentary Bureau, Ankara. (Slightly modified for linguistic purposes) Some 38 deputies from coalition partner parties apply to Parliament Speaker's Office to underline the problems of media sector some (burada = yaklaşık... Speaker = Meclis başkanı... to underline = Altını çizmek, vurgulamak... An investigation proposal on the media sector prepared by the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputy Nazif Okumuş and signed by members of the three-way coalition government was presented to the Parliament Speaker's Office. investigation proposal = araştırma teklifi... deputy = milletvekili... Increasing unemployment in the media sector, low salaries, lack of job security as well as monopolization are posing a threat to the freedom of press, the proposal said. increasing unemployment = giderek artan işsizlik... low salaries = düşük ücretler... (genelde, biliyorsunuz, salary = maaş [genelde aylık]; wages / çoğunlukla plural kullanılır [genelde haftalık ve beden işçileri için] = ücret... lack of job security = iş güvenliği olmaması... monopolization = tekelleşme... posing a threat to = bir tehdit oluşturuyor... "Turkish press is facing important and serious problems that need to be solved urgently. [...] Problems that have occurred in the media sector for the last decade is the result of unfair competition and monopolization in the sector," the proposal stated. that need to be solved urgently = acil çözülmesi gereken... in the last decade = son on yılda... unfair competition = haksız rekabet... The proposal underlines the fact that more than 5,000 people working in the media sector have been sacked and those who still have jobs are getting poor salaries, [...] pointing out that newspaper circulations are in sharp decline and apart from the unemployment issue, the media sector also has problems regarding technology, cost and distribution. [...] have been sacked = işten atıldılar... those who still have jobs = hala bir işi olanlar... circulation = (burada) tiraj... [Biyolojide: dolaşım... İktisatta: dolaşım, tedavül; the money in circulation...] the unemployment issue = işsizlik sorunu... distribution = dağıtım... "There are some media bosses who are using the media organs as a tool for personal ambitions, anger and bribery. It is wrong and unfair for the state to limit the freedom of the press but it is also wrong and a crime for the media to attempt to apply pressure on the state and political life," the proposal said. media bosses = medya patronları... personal ambitions = şahsi hırsları... bribery = rüşvet (Buradaki sözcük seçimi ve gramatik kullanımı bana pek sağlam görünmüyor. Ancak teklifte yer alan tümceyi bilmediğim için aynen bıraktım. Ben olsam şöyle oluştururdum: ... a tool for personal ambitions, as well as for political revenge and intimidation... Bu son sözcük, "korkutma, sindirme" demektir.) |
CIM BOM APPEASES DISILLUSIONED FANSGALATASARAY 2, WERDER BREMEN 1by Udo Steven Bassey, Ankara - Turkish Daily News (Shortened and slightly modified)For two days in a row, Galatasaray (Cim Bom) played warm-up matches in Antalya, and for two days in a row Cim Bom lost, by the same score 2-1. First against Russia's Spartak Moscow and then to Turkish Division Two struggler Antalya Kepezspor. to appease = yatıştırmak... appeasement (siyasette) savaş tehdidine karşı taviz vererek, istenileni yerine getirerek yatıştırmak... disillusioned = hayal kırıklığına uğramış... for two days in a row = ardarda iki gün... warm-up = ısınma, hazırlık... struggler = 1. mücadele eden; 2. zor durumda olan... To beat Werder Bremen and appease its disillusioned fans, Cim Bom's play was bound to be an elegant display of attacking skill, [...] but in doing so, they left gaping holes in their defense and Bremen was quick to exploit one of them. was bound to be = olması kaçınılmazdı... display = gösteri, sergileme... gap = ara, aralık, boşluk... to gape = ağzını kocaman açmak, ağzını açıp şaşkınlıkla aval aval bakmak... gaping holes = kocaman boşluklar... to be quick to do something = birşeyi yapmakta gecikmemek, çabucak yapmak... to exploit = 1. sömürmek; 2. kendi yararına kullanmak... was quick to exploit one of them = bunlardan birisini kendi yararlarına kullanmakta gecikmediler... Just after four minutes of play, Bremen went into the lead from an own-goal by captain-defender Bülent Korkmaz, when he kicked the ball into the back of his own net in a desperate bid to stop a Bremen player, who had broken loose and beaten Cim Bom's Colombian keeper Faryd Mondragon neat and clear. went into lead = öne geçti... in a desperate bid = çaresiz (ve herşeyi göze alan) bir girişimle... had broken loose = sıyrılmıştı, serbest kalmıştı... neat and clear = açık şekilde uzağında... (neat, aslında "düzenli, tertipli" demektir. Burada,"işi iyi başarmıştı" anlamına "gayet" sözcüğüyle çevrilebilecek bir pekiştirici görevi yapıyor. "Clear" is burada açığında, Mondragon'un uzanamayacapı bir mesafede" anlamı veriyor.... However, Bülent turned from villain to hero in the 34th when he equalized 1-1 for Cim Bom from a corner kick. Just a minute later, playmaker Sergen Yalçın was on target to settle the score: Galatasaray 2, Werder Bremen 1. turned from villain to hero = kötü adamdan kahramana dönüştü... ("Villain" aslında hain, ihanet eden, demektir. Ama burada, gerek "hero" gerekse "villain", bir romanın yada filmin kahramanı ve kötü kişisi anlamında kullanılıyor... was on target = hedefi buldu... settle the score = skoru tayin etti [...] One problem with Galatasaray is that it plays according to the strength of its opponents. That explains why Cim Bom sweeps aside European heavyweights with enthralling arrogance and at times loses to lightweights in Turkland. A clear example was in the Turkish Cup when Galatasaray was ousted in the third round by Second Division Erzurumspor. according to the strength of its opponents = rakiplerinin gücüne göre... sweeps aside = süpürüp bir kenara atıyor... European heavyweights = ağırsikletleri, önde gelen takımları... enthralling = büyüleyici... arrogance = kibir, gurur, mağrur olma... to oust = defetmek, dışarı atmak, görevden düşürmek... in the third round = üçüncü turda... Second Division = İkinci Lig... |

CHUNKS OF WISDOM OR DROPLETS OF BANALITY ?
ANONYMOUS SAYINGS ON MARRIAGE !!!Marriage is like a cage; those outside are desperate to get in and those inside are desperate to get out. Türkçe feryat çok daha güçlü: Bülbülüm altın kafeste!... despair [dis-peı] = umutsuzluk, çaresizlik... desperate [des-pırit] = 1. Çaresizlikten deliye dönmüş; mutlaka bulması gerekiyor: We are in desperate need of food and supplies... 2. Çaresizlikten gözleri dönmüş, vahşi ve tehlikeli: Be careful; he's a very desperate man now... His failure made him desperate; he was resolved to succeed or die in the attempt... 3. Umutsuz, çaresiz, çok kötü durumda: The government must act quickly to remedy the desperate situation the economy is in... Yukardaki deyişin en iyi çevirisi: Dışardakiler girmek için, içerdekiler çıkmak için çırpınıyor... Marriage is when a man and woman become as one; the trouble starts when they try to decide which one. "Become" fiili "be" fiilinin süreç belirten halidir. Sözlüklerde, "be" fiili "olmak" şeklinde çevrilirken, "become" için de genelde "oluşmak" tanımı verilir. Türkçe'ye çoğu zaman "hale gelmek, haline gelmek, -- lamak, --laşmak" şeklinde çeviri verir. Bu kimliği ile, "get" fiili ile eşkullanımlı olmakla birlikte, daha kitabi olduğunu ekleyebiliriz: to be fat, to get fat, to become fat... Before marriage, a man yearns for the woman he loves. After marriage, the 'Y' becomes silent. yearn [yö:n] [Unutmayın, bunlar UK okunuşları, USA İngilizcesinde /r/ belirgin biçimde telaffuz edilecektir] = (for veya after alır) Büyük özlem duymak, çok istemek... "Y" harfini kaldırınca: earn [ö:n] = para kazanmak... He yearns for her... He earns for her... Every man wants a wife who is beautiful, understanding, economical and a good cook. But the law allows only one wife. "Economy" sözcüğünün sıfat hali "economic" tir. Asla "economical system/measures/situation" diyemezsiniz. Doğrusu "the economic system, economic measures, the economic situation" vb... "Economical" tümüyle farklı bir anlam taşır = Tasarrufa yol açan, tasarruflu, hesaplı... Karışıklık her iki anlamın Türkçe'de tek sözcükle karşılanmasından kaynaklanıyor: Hükumet ekonomik paket açıyor; Evimizde ekonomik paket OMO kullanıyoruz... Bu arada, to economize = tasarruf etmek, harcamalardan kısmak demektir: We economize ON something BY doing something... Marriages are made in heaven. But so again, are thunder and lightning. heaven = Cennet, cennet gibi yer, gökler, "yukardaki" alem... to go to (to be in) heaven X to hell : "I'm in heaven when we dance cheek to cheek"... Heaven forbid! = Allah korusun! Allah yazdıysa bozsun... Good Heavens! = Aman Allahım! (şaşkınlık, beklemiyor olmak)... Thank Heaven you're back. Allaha şükür ki döndün... I recently read that love is entirely a matter of chemistry. That must be why my wife treats me like toxic waste. Buradaki "recently" + past tense kullanımı colloquial English açısından yanlış değil, ama intermediate arkadaşların bunu şimdilik görmezden gelmelerini ve present perfect kurallarına sadık kalmalarını öneririm. A man is incomplete until he is married. After that, he is finished. I'm an excellent housekeeper. Every time I get a divorce, I keep the house. İmza: Şen Dul... Housekeeper = Ev işlerine nezaret eden kadın, kadın kahya... Bu işleri evin hanımından başkası ücretsiz üstlenmeyeceğine göre, çok haklı ve şahane bir itiraf... * * * * * |
