      I despise, detest, and roundly hate spam, Dear Members, and I know you do, too... Nobody considers it worth his tuppence, apart from the spammers themselves, it seems... What do you do with all the dozens of spam messages you get each and every day? Just delete them out of existence, send them into nothingness. So do I. But this one was strangely different: It caught my eye with "Time Travelers PLEASE HELP!!!!" in the subject line. I read on... 

    "If you are a time traveler... I need your help!.. I need to be able to -- Travel back in time... I am in very great danger and need this immediately!"...  Boy! That was pure poetry. A very clever piece of writing... I read on: "I am aware that there are many types of time travel and I know that there are some very powerful people out there with alien or government equipment capable of doing just that... GOVERNMENT AND PHARMACISTS AT ODDS

Thousands of pharmacists pulled down their shutters on two consecutive days this week in protest of the government's decision to cut their profit margin by 10 percent. People stood in long queues in front of the pharmacies that were on duty, but many came back empty-handed as only the most vital drugs were offered for sale.

pulled down their shutters = kepenklerini indirdiler... consecutive = ardarda gelen... queue [kyu:] = sıra kuyruğu... on duty = görevde, nöbetçi... 

The Ministry of Health, in an attempt to lower the sales prices, has recently reduced the pharmacists' profits over domestically produced drugs by halving their 20 percent profit margin. However, the Chamber of Pharmacists points out that, although imported drug prices went up by 135 percent due to last year's devaluation, the price of locally manufactured drugs rose by a mere 98 percent.

Pharmacists seem determined to carry on their boycott. Posters hung on the windows of closed pharmacies reading: "The pharmacies are closed today in order to survive and keep (citizens) alive. They are putting up a life struggle." Pharmacists, also supported by The Turkish Doctors Union (TTB),  are demanding that the 18 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on drugs be curbed down to 8 percent.

to carry on = sürdürmek... to survive = varlığını sürdürebilmek, ölmemek... value added tax = katma değer vergisi... to curb = sınırlamak... to curb down = aşağı indirerek sınırlamak... (curb = kaldırım: yolu sınırlıyor)...

A press release from the Pharmaceutical Industry Employers Union (IEIS) noted that the government's decision puts their industry under great risk since the pharmacies' commercial activity as a whole is bound to be adversely affected.

press release = basın bildirgesi... employers union = işverenler sendikası... to be bound + mastar = kaçınılmaz olmak... to be adversely affected= olumsuz etkilenmek... (Unutmayınız, side effect = yan etki, adverse effect = ters etki... Biliyorsunuz, "effect" aslında "sonuç" demektir: cause and effect = sebep ve sonuç; ama Türkçeye çoğu zaman "etki" sözcüğü ile en iyi çeviri veriyor...

NEWBORN TRIPLETS FREEZE TO DEATH

A set of premature triplets died Monday after their mother gave birth in their unheated home in Turkland's impoverished southeast, which has been hit by sub-freezing temperatures, the Anatolia news agency reported.

triplets = üçüzler... unheated = ısıtılmamış, ısıtılmayan... impoverished = fakir düşmüş, fakirleştirilmiş... poor = fakir... poverty = fakirlik ("v" ye dikkat ediniz; "power" ile karıştırmayınız)... sub-freezing = donma noktasının altında...

Two of Adalet Siyahgöz's babies, who were born more than two months premature, died in the family's home in the town of Siverek, the agency reported. The third newborn died at a hospital, where their mother remained in a coma from malnutrition and loss of blood during childbirth.

"The babies' bodies had turned purple from the cold," Anatolia quoted emergency room Dr. Fatih Akkov as saying. Temperatures in the region were minus 10 C (14 F) Monday.

The government provides the poor free health care but apparently the Siyahgöz family had not applied for the service. The babies became the latest victims of harsh winter which has claimed the lives of more than two dozen people across the country.

Zaten Türkçemiz bu konuda başı çekiyor. Örneğin İngilizcede "bear" sözcüğü hiç de küfür sayılmaz, ama İMKB'de "ayı" lardan söz etmek ne kadar tuhaf kaçıyor. "Ayıcık" mı desek, ne? Bakalım millet olarak yüreklerimizi dolduran "derin hayvan sevgimiz" ne zaman dilimize yansıyacak?
