      Any effort to increase one's vocabulary, Dear Members, becomes a truly pleasurable activity once we realize how important one's word power really is. Notwithstanding the misleading "What's in a word?", it is through WORDS that a person conceives and expresses his or her whole personality. It is through increasing your vocabulary that you speak and write with confidence, read effectively and efficiently, think dynamically, thus broaden your mental horizons, and learn more quickly, and work more constructively, and more importantly, develop your social contacts and get along really well with people. 

    Our discerning Members will have noticed that one of the foremost aims of this Ezine is to offer help to those who wish to develop a powerful, effective and colourful vocabulary... I try to make it simple and easy -- and, pleasurable and entertaining as well. It is my conjecture that Members have a chance to gain 25 to 75 new words in each issue, according to their present level of vocabulary skills. That adds up to 200 to 600 new words per month -- which by any evaluative standards must be considered "a lot"...izbul

TURKLAND PROPOSES TO LEAD FORCE IN AFGHANISTAN

WASHINGTON (AP) --The Bush administration has said that it is ready to discuss the demands to ease import tariffs and write off military debt, but has so far made no promises to Ecevit, who is wrapping up a five-day trip to the United States.

to ease = rahatlatmak, kolaylaştırmak (UYARI: Yerimiz nisbetinde verdiğimiz karşılıklar genelde "buradaki anlam" şeklinde anlaşılmalıdır. Economy Minister Kemal Derviş said Turkey's letter of intent would be signed Friday, but said some measures still had to be taken in Turkland before the standby agreement is approved by the IMF executive board. The IMF has already approved $19 billion worth of loans and is expected to lend another dlrs 10 billion under the upcoming agreement.

TURKLAND BIDS TO END HUNGER STRIKE

ANKARA, Turkland (AP) -- The Justice Ministry said Friday it was allowing prisoners in Turkland's maximum security prisons to socialize with other inmates for five hours a week, in an attempt to try and end a yearlong hunger strike that has claimed 45 lives.

The inmates are fighting transfers from large wards housing up to 100 people to one- or three-inmate cells, which they say leave them vulnerable to abusive guards. About 100 prisoners and their supporters are taking part in the strike.

The independent Human Rights Association said the strikers vowed to continue their fast, despite the new regulation, which allows prisoners to meet up in groups of 10 for up to five hours a week under strict supervision.

In a similar move last year, the ministry allowed prisoners limited communal time in libraries and sports halls. The prisoners also rejected that offer and no one signed up for the activities.

ŞİKAYETİM VAR !!

Geçen Sayımızda bir üst sağ sütunda önemli bir yayın organımızda yapılan bir dil yanlışlığına işaret etmiş ve konunun uzmanlarından beni bu konuda teyid etmelerini rica etmiştim Şöyle ki:

"bodies had turned purple from the cold"  = soğuktan morarmıştı...  DİKKAT -- Bu Türkçe'den İngilizceye bir yansıtma; İngilizce'de "turn purple" denilmez... Konunun uzmanı üyelerimizden düzeltme bekliyorum...

Yanıtını ben vereyim: "TURN BLUE", denilir... "Ekimoz" karşılığı ise "bruised" veya "black and blue" olur... Mor rengin insan vücuduyla ilgili kullanıldığı tek deyim "to become purple with rage", yani öfkeden (yüzü) morarmaktır.

Bilmediği halde sormayanlar da, bildiği halde söylemeyenler de sağolsun. Demek ki bizler, Anglo-Saksonlar'a kıyasla farklı "morarmağa" bir süre daha devam edeceğiz...

accurate, accuracy, inaccurate, inaccuracy... "to save" fiili burada "gereksiz kılar, tonlarca açıklamadan kurtarır", anlamında kullanılıyor. Tıpkı, "A stitch in time saves nine" atasözünde olduğu gibi = yırtık büyümeden, zamanında bir ilmek atarsanız, ilerde atmak zorunda kalacağınız dokuz ilmekten kurtulmuş olursunuz...

    "ILL" [hasta] sözcüğü diğer sözcüklerin başına tire ile ayırarak yerleştirildiğinde, sözlük anlamını yitirir ve mevcut anlamı olumsuza çeviren bir ön-ek niteliği kazanır:

ill-intentions = kötü niyetler... "I am sure it was an accident; I don't think he had any ill-intentions."

ill-feelings = düşmanca duygular... "Personally, I have no ill-feelings towards you."

meet with an accident = başına istenmedik birşey gelmek... "That project, I'm afraid, met with an accident and had to be abandoned."

The mother went to the minister and made her request. He agreed, but said he wanted to see the younger boy first and alone. So the mother sent him to the minister. The minister sat the boy down on the other side of his huge, impressive desk. For about five minutes they just sat and stared at each other.

to sit smb down = oturtturdu ("intransitive" olmasıyla ünlü bir fiilin nekadar ilginç bir "transitive kullanımı", değil mi?)... huge, impressive = Kocaman ve etkileyici... to stare = uzun uzun bakmak, bakakalmak...

Finally, the minister pointed his forefinger at the boy and asked, "Where is God?"

pointed his forefinger at = (bizdeki karşılığı) işaret parmağını tehditkar bir tavırla sallayarak (kültürlerin vücut dilinin farklılığına dikkat ediniz)...

The boy looked under the desk, in the corners of the room, all around, but said nothing. Again, louder, the minister pointed at the boy and asked, "Where is God?"

all around = tüm çevresine, tüm çevreye... again, louder = yine, daha yüksek bir sesle... pointed at the boy = (daha önceki gibi) parmağını sallayarak...

  Again the boy looked all around but said nothing. A third time, in a louder, firmer voice, the minister
leaned far across the desk and put his forefinger almost to the boy's nose, and asked "Where is God?!!!"

in a firmer voice = daha kesin, kararlı, sert bir sesle... leaned far across the desk = masanın öteki ucundan(=karşı tarafına doğru) iyice eğilerek... (to lean: 1. eğilmek, sarkmak "lean out of the window"... 2. yaslanmak "lean against the door"...

put his ... nose = işaret parmağını neredeyse çocuğun burnunun içine sokarak...

The boy panicked and ran all the way home. Finding his older brother, he dragged him upstairs to their room, where they usually plotted their mischief.

ran all the way home = bütün yolu koşarak... drag = sürüklemek, çekiştirerek götürmek... closet = dolap... to plot = plan yapmak, komplo kurmak... mischief, mischievous : ad, sıfat...

He finally said, "We are in B-I-I-I-G
trouble now!" The older boy asked, "What do you mean, B-I-I-I-G
trouble?" 

His brother replied, "God is missing and they think we did it."

certain = 1. Kesin inanıyor, emin: "I'm certain that she will come back sooner or later."... 2. Kesin, kaçınılmaz, öyle olacağı muhakkak: "There is no certain cure for this condition. It means certain death"... 3. Belli, muayyen: "At certain times... at certain times of the year..." = Belli zamanlarda, muayyen zamanlarda... "A certain man I met yesterday" = dün tanıştığım adamın birisi... A certain Mr. Jones wanted to see you." = Jones adında bir adam sizinle görüşmek istiyordu... 4. Belli derecede, muayyen derecede, biraz... "There was a certain coldness in her manner towards me." = Bana karşı olan tavırlarında belli bir soğukluk vardı...

suburb = banliyö... suburban = banliyöye ilişkin... (Gerçi bizde de değişmeye başladı, ama) Bizdeki gibi "varoş... fakir kenar mahalle" anlamı taşımıyor. Tersine, üst orta sınıfın oturduğu "residential" alanları dile getiriyor... Örneğin, "suburban life" deyimi, "maddi bakımdan sıkıntısı olmayan tabakanın refah içindeki hayatı" anlamını verir.

Yine de burada bize uydurmak için "kenar mahalle" tanımını daha uygun buldum.

neighbour = komşu... neighbourhood = 1. komşuluk; 2. semt, mahalle...

minister: Biliyorsunuz İngilizce'de "papaz" sözcüğü ile çevirdiğimiz onlarca sözcük var. Devenin Arapçada kırk türlü karşılığı olduğu gibi, bunlar da Hristiyanlığın farklı mezheplerine mensup din adamları için kullanılan farklı sözcüklerden oluşuyor. Ayrıntılarına girmemize gerek yok...

how come = nasıl oluyor da? ("Why" ve "What for" ile büyük ölçüde çakışıyor... Ancak düz tümce oluşturduğuna dikkat ediniz.)

Systematic (Tentatively) Examples of British Slang

Crap = Kök anlamı "b*k" olan bu sözcük, "saçmalık, palavra" anlamında kullanılıyor. Amerikalılar aynı sözcüğü daha büyük bir rahatlıkla kullanıyorlar. Amerikan TV'lerinin "talk show" larında "crap... total crap" şeklinde işitilebiliyor. Britanya adalarında ise çok daha kaba addedilen bir sözcük... "What crap! I don't believe a word of it!" ["what crap" gramer olarak doğru biçim olmakla birlikte, benim kulak belleğimde /wt-ı-kræp/ "What a crap" biçimi de kalmış... Arkadaşlarımızın fikrini alabilir miyim?]

Daft = Aptal, budala... "Oh! Don't be daft." "Hey, you're a daft one, aren't you?" Biliyorsunuz, genç sevgililer bu tür "takdir dolu" serzenişleri rahatlıkla iletişirken (Hey! Türkçe'de yeni bir sözcük icat ettim galiba!), karı-koca arasında fırtınanın başlangıcı olabilir...

Diddle = Üçkağıda getirip birşeylerini almak, hafiften dolandırmak... "Should you visit some shady parts of London,  you'd be wise to check you change just to make sure you haven't been diddled!"

Dishy = (Özellikle bayanlar hakkında) Çekici... "Let's go get ourselves a couple of dishy birds!" ["Bird" sözcüğünün "piliç, yavru, cıvır" anlamına geldiğini unutmadınız, değil mi? Ben bu "cıvır" sözünü Le-Manyak/Lombak kültürü üzerine yaptığım derin çalışmalardan kazandım.(Bu reklam için kendilerinden sponsorum olmalarını isteyebilirim)]

Dodgy = Pek güvenilmez, biraz riskli, hafiften tehlikeli... "I don't know. It all looks a bit dodgy to me..." "Be careful with him. He's a bit... errr, dodgy, I should say." "That spam looks bit dodgy to me, you('d) better throw it away." ("Spam" et ürünlerinin artıklarından oluşturulup konserve kutularında satılan berbat bir yiyecek maddesi olup, fakir öğrencilerin ekmek yanına günlük tayını idi.)

Duck = Manchester, Leeds ve daha yukarı kalan kısımlarda size "ördek" diye hitap ettiklerinde, kesinlikle bir hakaretle karşı karşıya değilsiniz. Tıpkı, Newcastle ve Sunderland çevrelerinde bir hanım size "luv" (love) şeklinde hitap ettiğinde aşkını ilan etmiş olmadığı gibi. Bunlar o yörelerin normal hitap şekilleri (halk ağzında). "Duck" sözcüğünü de çoğu kez, /duk/ veya /du:k/ telaffuzuyla işitirsiniz. '70'li yıllarda üniversite çevrelerinde "Oh, ducky!" şeklinde alaycı bir "Yok yav, yavrum benim" kullanımı çok yaygındı. Hala var mıdır, bilemem.

Fiddlesticks! =  Küfürden hoşlanmayan kibar insanlar için... Biraz da benden bile önceki kuşağın kullanmış olduğu bir sözcük. "Saçmalık! Amma da saçma şey!"

Get lost! = Yallah ! Kaybol !.. "Oh, get lost, will you?!" "F*** off, will you" ile kıyaslandığında, bir derece daha "kibar"...

Get stuffed! = Bu da hoş bir deyim değil. "Geber, emi!" der gibi..."to stuff" = 1. tıkıştırmak, istiflemek; 2. tıkınmak (stuff oneself); 3. hayvan postunu doldurmak suretiyle korumak (taxidermy)...

Stuff and nonsense = "Saçma, incir çekirdeğini doldurmaz" anlamında fazla kaba sayılamayacak bir deyiş...
