     Our discerning Members will have noticed that this bilingual electronic ezine, incorporating linguistic principles of second language acquisition with practical insight gained through years of language teaching, provides powerful tips for you in advancing and improving your English language skills. You must bear with my shortcomings -- for I work alone -- but I work diligently to serve your needs to the best of my ability, trusting that you will help me all along with your questions and comments, too.

     It also functions, I hope, as an added incentive for you to keep your English alive and active (it does so for me), whether you read it on your computer or print it out for re-study wherever you like. And it all comes to you free of any charges. This, I understand, raises questions in some minds relating to my "motives" in putting in so much effort for no obvious material gains. Let me tell you, then, this gives me immense moral and spiritual (not to say, psychological) as well as intellectual satisfaction, for this is my way of picking up bones and settling an account with the circumstances that led to my official resignation -- some seventeen years back now!... izbul

TURKISH PM: SADDAM HAS WORLD AGAINST HIM

Turkland's prime minister has called on Saddam Hussein to allow UN weapons inspectors into Iraq and warned that refusal to do so could bring massive US retaliation. The Iraqi leader "has to pull himself together, he has to get in line," Mr. Ecevit told the state-owned TRT television. "He has nearly the whole world against him."

called on = çağrıda bulundu... weapons inspectors = silah denetçileri... refusal to do so = böyle yapmayı reddetmek... retaliation = misilleme... pull oneself together = kendini toparlamak, kendine çeki düzen vermek... get in line = hizaya girmek, uyum sağlamak...

Refusing to admit the inspectors could bring "serious afflictions, not only for Iraq but for the whole world, especially the Middle East and Turkland," Ecevit said. Earlier this week, the Turkish foreign minister had written to Baghdad urging the admission of the inspectors, but had "not had a satisfactory response."

afflictions = (burada) sıkıntılar... to be afflicted with = hastalık vb. için tutulmuş olmak, yakalanmış olmak... to urge "acil ve önemlidir" çağrısında bulunmak...

Iraq has refused since 1998 to allow UN inspectors into the country to check if the Baghdad regime has dismantled its weapons of mass destruction.

to dismantle = demonte etmek, parçalarına ayırmak, sökmek... weapons of mass destruction = kitle imha silahları...

Turkland was a launching pad for strikes against Iraq in the 1991 Gulf War, and still hosts US and British planes that patrol a no-fly zone over Iraq's north.

launching pad = fırlatma rampası; (burada mecazi)... strikes = darbeler, saldırılar... to host = evsahipliği yapmak... to patrol = devriye gezmek (burada: devriye uçuşu)... no-fly zone = uçuşa kapalı bölge...

 

FANS FORCE MATCH POSTPONEMENT

Supporters of Trabzonspor forced a Turkish league game to be suspended after 85 minutes. They set fires in the stadium and hurled plastic chairs at players during the match against Beşiktaş. No injuries were reported after the trouble.

be suspended = askıya alınmak; (burada) iptal edilmek... set fires = ateşe verdiler, ateşler (yangınlar) başlattılar... to hurl = fırlatmak, atmak...  No injuries were reported = herhangi bir yaralanma bildirilmedi...

Beşiktaş were leading 5-0 when angry home-team fans started the violence. Riot police and commando units rushed to defend a group of Beşiktaş fans, who had travelled from İstanbul, while police evacuated the players of both teams. Police tightened security around the stadium to prevent clashes between the two groups.

Former Galatasaray and Germany coach Jupp Derwall criticized Fenerbahçe for firing his former protégé Mustafa Denizli in December.

 ARISTO NE DEMİŞMİŞ, NE DEMEMİŞMİŞ ?? 

     00007 no'lu sayımızda yer alan bir soru pekçok okuyucumuzu çok üzmüş -- hatta soruda veya yanıtta bir yanlışlık olduğu kanısına varan arkadaşlarımız da olmuştu. Bu hafta içinde gelen bir başka soru ile birleştirerek ayrıntılarıyla açıklamak istiyorum. Verdiğim test sorusu şöyle idi:

Aristotle is known to have said something like this: ".............. man is a political animal is pretty obvious."

a. This       b. That       c. The        d. A        e. Every

Doğru yanıt: "That" -- Yani, "b" şıkkı... Peki ama neden?!  Şimdi onu açıklayalım: Çünkü, İngilizcede "that" sözcüğü ile başlatılan iki tür tümcelik (clause) kurulabilir:

1. Tanımlayıcı/kısıtlayıcı sıfat tümcelik (defining or restrictive relative clause). Örnek:

Some of the things (that) we found there were truly amazing.

2. Ad-tümcelik (noun clause). Örnekler:

It is not surprising that they hold you responsible for it.

Aristotle said that man is a political animal.

It is known that man is a political animal.

Bu örneklerde, ingilizcede "complement" adını verdiğimiz ad-tümcelikler doğrudan nesne (direct object) işlevini karşılıyor.

Ama, daha az yaygın bir kullanım örneğinde, bu tür ad-tümcelikler, özne (subject) işlevi ile de kullanılabilir: Örnekler:

That they hold you responsible for it is not surprising.

          Şaşırtıcı olmayan nedir? Seni sorumlu tutmaları...

That man is a political animal is well known.

          İyi bilinen şey nedir? İnsanoğlunun toplumsal* bir yaratık olduğu...

Görüyorsunuz, ad-tümcelik burada özne işlevi ile kullanılıyor. (Toplumsal* = eski Yunan polis'lerinde yaşayan)...

ÖNEMLİ KURAL:

"That" sözcüğü ile kurduğunuz ad-tümcelik özne konumunda olduğunda bağlaç (yani, "that") kaldırılamaz; mutlaka kullanmak zorundasınız. Nesne konumunda olduğunda ise kaldırılabilir ve uygulama da çoğu zaman bu yöndedir.

That they are identical twins is easy to see.

It is easy to see (that) they are identical twins.

"That" ile başlayan bu tür tümceler, başlıca hitabet sanatında rastlanılan, güçlü fakat seyrek kullanılan ağdalı/tumturaklı bir anlatım tarzına aittir. Günlük konuşmada bunlar, yukardaki örnekte görüldüğü gibi, daha çok belirsiz ("dummy") "it" şeklindeki özne için complement olarak kullanılır.

Sonuçta, verdiğimiz örnek doğru ve yakışıklı bir tümcedir. Anlamı ise:

Aristo'nun şöyle birşeyler söylemiş olduğu bilinir: "İnsanoğlunun toplumsal bir yaratık olduğu besbelli..."

Bu arada, bir de tonlamaya ilişkin bir not: Tabiatıyle buradaki "That man ... etc" tümcesini "bu adam, şu adam" anlamına gelen "this man, that man" deki gibi tonlamayacaksınız. Burada "that" sözcüğünü birhayli "ukalaca" bir tavırla söyledikten sonra, bir an duraklayıp ardından ad-tümceliği patlatacaksınız! Unutmayın, hitabet ve belagat sanatından bir örnek veriyorsunuz...

NOTES TOWARD A COMPILATION OF ENGLISH IDIOMS FOR TURKS

accuse smb of sth = suçlamak..." It is wrong to accuse a person of a crime unless one has clear evidence that points to him."

accusation (bring an accusation against) = suçlamada bulunmak... "A lot of people brought accusations against him but he was never convicted of anything concrete."

accustom oneself to sth = kendini alıştırmak, uyarlanmak... "You will have to accustom yourself to their strange ways and customs."

accustomed (be accustomed to) = alışkın olmak, alışmış olmak... "Don't worry. We have been long accustomed to sleeping on hard floors!"

accustomed (get/become accustomed to) = alışmak, alışkın hale gelmek (yukardaki fiilin süreç hali)... "I'm afraid I'll never get accustomed to sleeping on hard floors." "They quickly became accustomed to sleeping in hammocks."

across (come across, run across) = karşılaşmak, rastlamak, denk gelmek, tesadüf etmek, tesadüfen karşılaşmak (= run into, meet ["meet" sözcüğünün "buluşmak" veya "tanışmak" anlamları ayrı]... "I came across a very interesting book in that second-hand shop."

act (in the act of) = sırasında, yaparken, ederken... "He was caught red-handed in the act of pilfering from a woman's handbag." (red-handed = suçu işlerken, suçüstü... pilfer = aşırmak)

act up to one's reputation = kendisinden beklenilen, adı çıkmışlığını doğrulayacak davranışlar göstermek... "Well, what do you expect? He just acted up to his reputation all the time we were there!"

action (take action) = harekete geçmek, eyleme başlamak... "Enough of this philosophizing! It is time to take action."

action (go into action) = savaşta muharebeye girmek/ girişmek/tutuşmak... "The battalion went into action just before sunrise." (Tabur güneş doğmadan az önce muharebeye girişti, tutuştu.)

 
MEDICAL AND PSEUDO-MEDICAL IDIOMS: BE CAREFUL -- KNOWING THESE OR NOT MAY BECOME A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH !!

I couldn't feel better! = Kendimi çok iyi hissediyorum. (Daha iyi hissetmem olanaksız, kavramından geliyor.)

itching = kaşıntı, kaşınma... "Have you had any discharge or itching of the nipple?" (nipple = meme ucu)

swelling = şişkinlik; swollen = şişkin... "Have you noticed any swelling in your armpits? (= koltuk altlarınızda)

an awful ache in one's belly = karın bölgesinde berbat bir ağrı... Hasta genelde üst abdominal bölge için bölgesi için "stomach", alt abdominal bölge için "belly" sözcüğünü kullanacaktır. Çocuk hastalar ise "stomach" yerine "tummy" derken, bu sözcüğü alt abdominal bölgeye de yayabilir...

throw up some blood = (bir miktar) kan kusmak...

pertinent findings = Vaka takdiminde kullanılan "vakaya ilişkin bulgular" deyimi. "The pertinent physical findings are related to the abdomen"... Bu sözcüğün tersi olan "impertinent" formunun ise, vaka takdimi yapan kişiye hakaret etmek istemiyorsanız tıpta kullanılmadığına dikkat ediniz. Anlamı: saygısız, münasabetsiz...

draw blood = Kan almak... (genel dilde bu deyim "yaralamak, kanını akıtmak" anlamındadır)... "The doctor decided to draw some blood from the patient to check up on his blood sugar level."

to flare up = Aniden alevlenmek, nüksetmek... "The patient's skin problems just flare up when she changes over to other soap brands." (Hastanın cilt sorunları, başka sabun markalarına geçecek olursa hemen azıyor.) "My mother's arthritis flares up every winter."

flare-up = Yukardakinin ad hali: "You must be prepared for a flare-up of your arthritis every winter." 

undergo an operation = go under the knife = Ameliyat olmak, "bıçak altına yatmak"... Hasta açısından bu deyimlerle anlatılan ameliyat, cerrah açısından ise: to perform an operation...

Does your water burn when you have to pass it? = İdrar yaparken yanma hissi var mı?...

to lapse into unconsciousness = bayılmak, baygınlığa girmek... "The man had long lapsed into unconsciousness by the time the ambulance could get to the scene."

"to match" fiili aslında eşleşmek, birbiri ile uyumiçinde olmak demektir. GS, FB ve BJK maç yapıyorlar, yani eşleşiyorlar, çünkü hepsi aynı kümede... O nedenle, "matchless" = eşsiz, benzersiz.  "matchmaker" ise kibrit yapan değil, çöpçatan: çünkü "eşleştiriyor"..

Systematic (Tentatively) Examples of British Slang

hanky Panky = orasını burasını elleme, okşama, sıkıştırma... "Look! I don't like that kind of hanky panky, all right?" Biraz daha ileri gider biçimine "monkey business" denildiğini işitebilirsiniz: "Listen! I don't want any kind of monkey business, OK?"

hash = esrar, marihuana (İng. yazılışı: marijuana)... Argodaki diğer adları: pot, shit... "Wacky backy" ise sarılmak üzere hazırlanmış esrar karıştırılmış tütün anlamında... Öte yandan, "Oh! You've made a real hash of it now!" dediğinizde, "Bir çuval inciri berbat ettin, b** ettin" anlamı verecektir.

Hiya! = Halk arasında kullanılan ve sanırım "Hi there!" den kısaltma olan bir merhaba deyişi...

I'm easy. = Benim açımdan bir sakıncası yok... Benim için farketmez... Tamam, olabilir/olsun... [Birinci tekil kişi dışında kullanıldığını hiç hatırlamıyorum ve muhtemelen de farklı bir anlamda yorumlanacaktır.]

jolly = Bir vurgu sözcüğü... "That's jolly good!" = That's very good... Öte yandan, "I should jolly well think so!" = Bir hayli öfke de belirtebilecek bir "Eh, herhalde öyle olsa gerek!" anlatımı...

Keep your pecker up! = Kendini koyverme, kuyruğu dik tut, anlamında bir söz. Ancak, "pecker" ç** anlamına da gelebildiği için, bir yanlışa düşmemek için kullanılmasını pek tavsiye etmem.

kip ( to have a kip) = to have a snooze = biraz kestirmek, kısa bir uyku çekmek... "I had a kip in front of the telly."

knackered = bitkin düşmüş, perişan halde... Yorgunluktan, içkiden vb. gibi. "Oh, God, what a hangover; I'm positively knackered!"

knockers = göğüsler, memeler... "Oh, me God! Look at those knockers!"
