    Let me hereby publicly offer my early condolences to all English soccer fans!! British press this last week was brimming over with "delighted" shrieks of "Turkish Delight For England!" An excellent example of this kind of cheaply bombastic and provocatively chauvinistic journalism you will find down below... Please note that it does not come from any cheap tabloid; it comes from the normally "sober" Financial Times! Well, such a pure gem of wistful thinking transformed into wishful thinking -- should not go unanswered... So, my deepest condolences, old chummies, for we will be bereft of the pleasure of seeing you in the second round of the European Cup...You see, these Slovakians -- as "the inferior footballing half of the former Czechoslovakia" -- seem so determined to grab the second place in the group that we cannot hope to do much to bail you out.

    Seriously, though, we do admire English soccer greatly and a lot of soccer fans never miss English super league matches televised in a number of channels here. But club football is no guarantee for the national team's success, as amply exemplified by the perennially-unsuccessful Spanish side vis-à-vis the magnificent Real Madrid. With British clubs "foollowing" suit, I'm afraid the same dire fate awaits Sven Goran Eriksson's students, too... izbul

SEZER VETOES THREE ARTICLES

    President Ahmet Necdet Sezer yesterday returned parts of a bank re-capitalization law to parliament, the presidential press office announced in a statement. Sezer vetoed three articles of the law, namely those requiring private labour contracts for employees of state banks, lifting Supreme Court of Accounts supervision over these banks and providing partial immunity for state bank executives in transactions related to restructuring of corporate debts.

to implement = yürürlüğe koymak, gereğini yapmak, uygulamak, gerçekleştirmek... of paramount importance = büyük önem taşıyor... 

   Mr. Özilhan said that Turkland must undergo a mentality reform, restructure its political system, and undertake further democratic reforms, thus speeding up the whole process of its European Union accession.

He is getting fatter and fatter. He must be eating rather a lot.

b) Need ve dare (do/did veya will/would ile çekime girmedikleri sürece):

You needn't say anything... You needn't have said anything... Fakat, You don't/didn't/won't need to say...)

How dare you insult me!... I dared not wake him... Fakat, I didn't/wouldn't dare (to) wake him...

c) would rather / would sooner -- rather than / sooner than (= tercih aderim... --den ziyade, --maktansa):

I'd rather wait till tomorrow.

NOT: Bu fiillerden sonra değişik anlamla participle da kullanılabilir:

I saw the man cross the street. = Adamın karşıya geçtiğini gördüm. (Adam karşıya geçti. Ben de bunu gördüm)

I saw the man crossing the street. = Adamı karşıya geçerken gördüm. (Ben gördüğümde karşıya geçiyordu)

I felt the train move. = Tren hareket etti. Bunu hissettim.

I felt the train moving. = Tren hareket halindeydi. Bunu hissediyordum.

g) Help her iki biçimde de kullanılabilir:

He helped me (to) push the car.

Please help me (to) push this heavy bookcase out of the way.

h) "And" sözcüğü ile bileştirilerek ardarda iki mastar kullanıldığında, genelde ikincisi yalın mastar olur:

I intend to stay at home and write some letters.

i) Go ve come emir kipinde veya must, will gibi yardımcı fiillerle birlikte kullanıldığında yalın mastar alacaklardır. Bu yapının türkçeye en iyi çevirisi "gidip görmek, gelip yardım etmek" şeklindedir:

Go and fetch me a knife, will you? = Gidip bana bir bıçak getirir misin?

I suppose I must come and help you again tomorrow. = Sanırım yarın yine gelip sana yardım etmeliyim.

I'll go and see him tomorrow. = Yarın gidip kendisini göreceğim.

Yukardaki durumlar dışında ise her iki fiil de olağan mastar kalıbında kullanılır:

acquaint oneself with = kendini aşina kılmak, bilgisini kazanmak... "You'll have to acquaint yourself with their local customs first."

acquired characteristics = sonradan edinilmiş özellikler... "Congenital tendencies are later modified greatly by acquired characteristics."

acre (God's acre) = mezarlık... "The way you're carrying on with your drinking, you'd better start bargaining for your place in God's acre."

act as = ... olarak davranmak, görevini veya rolünü üstlenmek... "The last time I met him, he was acting as a consultant with several law firms."

THE BILINGUAL DOG !

A local business was looking for office help, so they put a sign in their window saying "HELP WANTED. Must be able to type, must be good with a computer and must be bilingual."

A little later, a dog passing by the window saw the sign and went inside. He went straight to a typewriter and proceeded to type out a perfect letter.

mate = dost, arkadaş... Çok yaygın kullanılan bir sözcük...  "How're you doing, mate?" Arkadaşlarınızdan söz ederken, "my friend, my old chum" gibi anlatımlar kullanabilirsiniz, ama yüzyüze konuşmada en yaygını "mate" sözcüğüdür.

nosh = yiyecek... "Let's go out for a good nosh up." Ama, kız arkadaşınızın size hazırladığı yemek için bu sözcüğü kullanmanız doğru olmaz; fazla iltifatkar sayılmayacaktır.

getting pissed = kafayı çekmek, kafayı bulmak... Fazla kaba sayılabilecek bir deyim değil. "Why? After all, you go to a pub for a piss up, i.e. to get pissed." Ama "piss" kelimesinin öteki kullanımları ile çok dikkatli olmalısınız...

getting pissed off = sıkılmağa, öfkelenmeğe başlamak. "I was getting rather pissed off." Öte yandan "Piss off, man!" dediğinizde, bir gayret "F*** off" seviyesine ulaşmış sayılabilirsiniz.

pissing around = ortalıkta aylak aylak takılmak... Pek kibar bir deyiş olduğu söylenemez...

plastered = tam sarhoş olmuş, aşırı kafayı çekmiş... "Oh, we were just plastered last night." "I was plastered out of my mind, man!"

potty = hafiften üşütük... birazcık "looney"... "one card short of a full deck"...

puke = kusmak veya kusmuk (fiil, ad)... Ayrıca, bıktırmak, usandırmak, midesini bulandırmak... "Oh, you make me puke!" Yada, "What a puke!", amma da sıkıcı, saçma şey anlamı verecektir. Sözcüğü tek başına bir ünlem olarak da kullanmak mümkün...
