PEOPLE AND EVENTS
MGK DISCUSSES ARTICLE 312

Leaders will once more meet at the beginning of next week

Pertaining to the freedom of expression, the democratization package, which led to a "mini" crisis among the coalition partners, was also discussed yesterday at Turkland's National Security Council (MGK).

pertaining = konusunda, ilişkin olarak... freedom of expression = ifade özgürlüğü...

As the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP)'s resistance could not be broken at Monday's leaders summit, which was held in order to resolve different opinions on the package, Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit had asked his partners to meet once more at the beginning of next week, after yesterday's MGK meeting.

leaders summit = liderler zirvesi... to resolve different opinions = farklı görüşleri uzlaştırmak...

Junior coalition partner the Motherland Party (ANAP) demands amendments to the draft law, which was adopted in its initial form, upon the reactions of the European Union management. ANAP's stance is also supported by Democratic Left Party (DSP).

junior coalition partner = koalisyonun küçük ortağı... amendment = yasa vb. değişikliği... draft law = yasa tasarısı... adopted in its initial form = ilk biçimiyle benimsenmişti... stance = tutum, tavır...

DSP officials noted that certain views that were included in the rationale of the bill would be inserted in the bill's text, and thus it would become more clear with the resolution of the uncertainties. However, coalition partner MHP rejects any small amendment to the bill, which was prepared by professor Sulhi Dönmezer and supported also by the military circles. MHP plans to satisfy both its extremist nationalist party base floor and military circles.

the rationale of the bill = tasarının gerekçesi...  the resolution of the uncertainties = belirsizliklerin çözülmesi... military circles = askeri çevreler... party base floor = parti tabanı...

BAG SNATCHING WITH VIOLENCE AGAIN

A woman who was returning home from her relatives' home with her six year old son in the Kurtuluş district of Istanbul was stabbed eight times by a bag-snatcher who wanted to steal her handbag. 28-year old Münevver Yeşiltepe was stabbed mostly on her hands and face when she resisted the snatcher, reportedly in his twenties, who wanted to grasp her handbag at a bus stop. The snatcher ran away throwing the handbag when the other people at the bus stop intervened. Yeşilkaya was hospitalized immediately and had microsurgery because one of her fingers was almost severed after the stabbing.

bag snatching = kapkaççılık... district = (burada) semt... was stabbed = bıçaklandı... reportedly = bildirildiğine göre... grasp = yakalamak tutmak, kavramak... to intervene = müdahele etmek, araya girmek... almost severed = neredeyse kopmuştu...

TOBACCO PURCHASE PRICES

The Turkish government yesterday announced that it has raised subsidized purchase prices of tobacco by some 35 percent from last year, as it prepares to phase out farm subsidies under an agriculture sector reform backed by international finance institutions.

subsidize = subvansiyon yapmak... raise ... by some 35 percent = yaklaşık %35 arttırmak... to phase out = giderek son vermek... subsidies = destek alımları (subvansiyonlar)...

State Minister responsible for privatization Karakoyunlu said the government would be subsidizing tobacco farmers via purchases for the last time this year, in line with a tobacco reform law that went into effect early January. The minister said the government made the most of its opportunities to give farmers the best price under the currently difficult economic conditions and wouldn't let inflation beat them. A decree authorizing this year's subsidy purchases was being prepared and would likely become effective within a few days.

responsible for privatization = özelleştirmeden sorumlu... via purchases = alınmlar yoluyla... in line with = uyarınca, ile uyumlu olarak... go into effect = yürürlüğe girmek... make the most of = en iyisini yapmak, en yüksek ölçüde yararlanmak... wouldn't let inflation beat them = enflasyonun onları yenmesine izin vermeyeceklerdi... decree =hükumet kararnamesi... to become effective = yürürlüğe girmek...

CHUNKS OF WISDOM OR DROPLETS OF BANALITY ?

THAT MYSTERIOUS FEELING CALLED "LOVE"
Let's Get Romantic Today, For A Change !!

Today I begin to understand what love must be, if it exists... When we are parted, we each feel the lack of the other half of ourselves. We are incomplete like a book in two volumes of which the first has been lost. That is what I imagine love to be: incompleteness in absence. -- Goncourt

when we are parted = ayrıldığımızda, ayrı olduğumuzda... incompleteness in absence = "Sen yarım, ben yarım; birleşmek mümkün değil; Dertlerde tamamlandık, yaşamakta değil..." (O. Gencebay)

I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough. -- Nicholas Sparks, "The Notebook"

a common man ... etc = sıradan bir adam, sıradan düşünceleri olan, sıradan bir hayat yaşamış... no monuments dedicated to me = adıma dikilmiş anıt yok... ve adım çok geçmeden unutulacak...

Once I dropped a tear in the ocean. When I find it is when I'll stop loving you. -- Anonymous

Ama biliyorsunuz "Translations, like wives, are seldom faithful if they are in the least attractive" (Roy Campbell): Türkçe uyarlaması: Çeviri, güzel bir kadın gibi, sadıksa çekici, cekici ise sadık olmaz!

At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet.  -- Plato

Feylezof Eflatun, daha o zamanlardan Anadolu'nun ruhunu okumuş: Bizde herkes şair...

There is no remedy for love but to love more.  -- Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau dilimize çevrildi mi acaba? Amerika'yı Amerika yapan temel akımlardan birisinin "civil disobedience" kavramı olduğunu biliyor muyuz?

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. -- Lao-Tzu

We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly embracing each other.  -- Luciano De Crescenzo

Herbirimiz birer tek kanatlı meleğiz; kucaklaşırsak birlikte uçabiliriz...

Our hours in love have wings; in absence, crutches. -- Colley Cibber, 1671-1757, British Actor-Manager, Playwright

Sevince kanatlarımız var, sevginin yokluğunda koltuk değneklerimiz...

May you live as long as you wish and love as long as you live.  -- Robert A. Heinlein

Dilediğinizce uzun yaşayın, yaşadığınızca uzun sevin, dostlar!...

 MASTARLARIN KULLANILDIĞI YERLER
 BİRİNCİ BÖLÜM

(1) İngilizce fiillerin büyük bir bölümü "We want to learn English" kalıbında kullanılabilen, yani kendisinden sonra mastar kullanılmasını gerektiren fiillerdir.

We had arranged to meet at eight... I'd asked her not to come before eight... She shouldn't expect to see me there if she decided to come earlier... But, she failed to appear at eight, because she had forgotten to set her alarm clock... I wasn't prepared to wait for her any longer... When she finally managed to arrive I was about to leave... She didn't want to pay any attention to my protestations... She pretended not to hear me and just promised to be on time the next time... But I would refuse to meet her ever again... So we decided to put a decent end to our short-lived affair, anyway.

(2) Değişik anlamlarla gerek infinitive (mastar) gerekse gerund (ad-fiil) alabilen fiiller.

We stopped on the way to have a hot drink. ( = Durduk)

We stopped having sweets after dinner. ( = Bıraktık, durdurduk, kestik.)

ÇALIŞMA ÖNERİSİ: Şu fiillerle aynı şekilde ikili tümceler kurmağa çalışınız: begin, cease, continue, hate, intend, like, love, neglect, prefer, propose, regret, remember, start, stop, try...

(3) Kimi fiiller, "He advised me to study harder" kalıbında kullanılabilir, yani kendisinden sonra "ad / adıl + mastar" alabilir: allow, ask, beg, expect, help, know, like, need, tell, want, warn, wish, gibi

NOT: Fiilin bu yapıyı alıp almaması ile ortaya çıkan anlam farkına dikkat ediniz:

I expect to leave tonight (Bu gece gitmeyi umuyorum)... I expect you to leave tonight (Senin be gece yola çıkacağını sanıyorum, yola çıkmanı istiyorum)...

I want to leave immediately (Hemen yola çıkmak istiyorum)... I want the rescue team to leave immediately (Kurtarma ekibinin hemen yola çıkmasını istiyorum)...

Study Suggestions: Consult a good dictionary for any word or expression you have doubts about -- for advanced learners I suggest an all-English dictionary and preferably one that offers extensive coverage of idioms and expressions for each entry and sample sentences as well... Write down your words in company with their dictionary definition, synonyms and antonyms, adding a good number of the idioms and expressions it appears in, not forgetting the sample sentences... Try to memorize these sentences... Come back and have a look at the whole group from time to time - to refresh your memory and maybe to make a few additions...

CLUES AND EXPRESSIONS:

She abhors cruelty to animals. I loathe him. What an abominable situation we're in! the abominable snowman..

We're eagerly anticipating your arrival... Columbus was probably anticipated by Viking sailors. = Anlamı: Vikingler daha önce gelmişlerdi... He wasn't anticipating the blow... [blow = darbe. Ama "hükumet darbesi = coup d'état... Kısaltılması: coup. Okunuşu ku:-dei-ta: ]

CLEAN JOKE OF THE DAY

* * * * *

THE WRONG MESSAGE !

Typing in the wrong e-mail address could cause some serious harm.
Consider the case of the Illinois man who left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida.

His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail. Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory.

scrap of paper = kağıt parçası...

Unfortunately, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher's wife, whose husband had passed away only the day before.

missed one letter = bir harf atladı... elderly preacher = yaşlı vaiz... to pass away = ölmek

When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint.

grieving widow = yastaki (üzüntülü) dul bayan... [erkek = widower -- yani onlarda erkek bizdeki gibi "bekar" kalmıyor, o da dul kalıyor.],,, piercing scream = kulakları tırmalayan [delici] bir çığlık... in a dead faint = ölü gibi baygın...

At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:

Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Signed, Your eternally loving husband.
P.S. Sure is hot down here.

DIRTY JOKE OF THE DAY

* * * * *

THE BIG REASON !

Edna and Bill were two residents of a nursing home who had been carrying on a love affair. They were both 96 years old, and wheelchair bound.

nursing home = huzur evi (bakım evi)... wheelchair bound = tekerlekli sandalyeye mahkum

Every night, they would meet in the TV room. Edna would passively hold Bill's penis and they would watch TV for an hour or so. It wasn't much, but it was all they had.

"would" = bu kullanım "used to" ile aynı anşamdadır... It wasn't much, but it was all they had. = Fazla birşey sayılmazdı, ama sahip oldukları tek şey buydu...

One night Bill didn't show up. He didn't show up for the next two nights either. Edna assumed he was dead, but then she saw him happily wheeling about the grounds, she confronted him and said, "Where were you these past couple of nights?"

He replied, "If you must know, I was with another woman".

"Bastard!" she cried. "What were you doing?". "We do the exact same thing that you and I do," he answered.

"Is she prettier or younger than I am?" she asked. "Nope, she looks the same, and she is 98 years old," Bill replied:

"Well then, what does she have that I don't?" Edna asked. Bill smiled slyly and said....

slyly = kurnazca, şeytanca, yaramazca...

" Parkinson's disease".

Love is grand; divorce is a hundred grand.

a hundred grand = argoda yüzbin dolar... boşanmanın maliyeti!...

Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly and for the same reason.

There is always death and taxes; however death doesn't get worse every year.

Bedava olan herşey ona ödediğiniz paraya değer...

My inferiority complex is not as good as yours.

I have kleptomania, but when it gets bad, I take something for it.

It's frustrating when you know all the answers, but nobody bothers to ask you the questions.

LEARN ( BUT DO NOT OVERUSE ) SOME SLANG EXPRESSIONS !!

Systematic (Tentatively) Examples of British Slang

be on the pull = karşı cinsten arkadaş bularak hoş bir gece geçirmek amacıyla dışarı çıkmak... "A disco or a pub, for instance, would be the usual hunting place for both men and ladies who are on the pull --only, ladies would go about it in a much subtler way."

pussy = Burada biraz karışıklık sözkonusu... İnternet pornografisindeki bariz Amerikan üstünlüğü nedeniyle, bu sözcük İngiltere^de de anlam değişikliğine uğramış görünüyorsa da, komşunuza çok doğal bir şekilde "Have you seen my pussy?" diye sorabilirsiniz? Amerika'da ise olanaksız görünüyor...

rubbish = sözlük anlamı, yani, çerçöp geçerli, ama bunun üstüne teklifsiz konuşmada "saçmalık, boş laf", hatta "saçma, cansıkıcı davranış" anlamı da binmiş... "Hey! stop talking rubbish." "Cut out that rubbish, will you?"

rugger = halk dilinde "rugby" sporu...
