DEATH TOLL RISES TO 45 IN EARTHQUAKE

At least 45 people are now known to have lost their lives in an earthquake in central Turkland. Worst hit was the township of Sultandağı, where at least fifteen people died.

are known to have lost = ...mış olduğu biliniyor... Worst hit...etc = devrik tümceye dikkat...

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0, as tremors toppled dozens of buildings, injuring more than a hundred and sending terrified residents leaping from their homes.

a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 = (gazeteci ağzıyla) ilk belirlemelere göre 6.0 şiddetinde [dil mantığı açısından ise saçma bir ifade]... topple = başaşağı etmek, alaşağı etmek... leaping...etc = yine gazeteci anlatımıyla... [meaning, they jumped out of their windows]

In the neighbouring township of Çay, eleven people were crushed to death under collapsing buildings. One person died in Bolvadin in a collapsed house and another person died of a heart attack in the neighbouring city of Konya, where seven people were injured from jumping from windows and balconies, state television said.

debris [deb-ri:] = yığıntı, birikinti, kalıntı... moloz yığını... mayor = belediye başkanı... provincial capital = il merkezi...

In villages around the area, the carcasses of animals lay amid the stones of collapsed barns and one-storey homes, while fires blazed in some houses. In Bolvadin, the minarets of several mosques had collapsed.

carcass [ka:-kıs] = hayvan leşi... (ayrıca, gemi enkazı, inşaatta yapı iskeleti)... amid = amidst = ortasında, arasında (yani, "among" gibi)... barn = ahır, çiftlik ambarı... one-storey = one-story, biçimi de olanaklı... blazed = tutuşmuş, alev alev yanıyor... several = bu sözcük "çeşitli, birçok, pekçok" gibi çeviri olanaklarıyla, sayı belirtmemekle birlikte, tümcenin gelişine ve mantığa bağlı olarak genelde 3-5 veya 7-8 gibi bir kavram uyandırır...

TURKISH COMPANIES IN AFGHANISTAN

The world community offers full aid for reconstruction of Afghanistan, as brotherly ties between Pakistan and Turkland are being strengthened and both countries are now cooperating in economic matters.

Yine görüyorsunuz, gazetecilik dilinde marifet, olanaklı en küçük boşluğa olanaklı en çok haberi tıkıştırmak = "economy in words" ilkesi, çoğu zaman klasik gramerin sınırlarını zorluyor. Yada, gazetecilik dilinin kendine göre bir grameri var demek daha doğru...

Pakistan seeks partnership with Turkland for reconstruction of neighbouring Afghanistan. Turkish constructor companies have been engaged in highway building projects in Pakistan for a long time.

to seek = çok istemek, özlemle aramak...

Cooperation in the highway sector, however,  needs to be promoted between the two countries. Pakistan will undertake all possible steps to promote cooperation in communications and railways industries, and vast opportunities that exist for the two brotherly countries will bring them closer.

to promote = (burada) geliştirmek, arttırmak... (diğer anlamları: 1. reklamını yapmak, tanıtmak; 2. terfi ettirmek)...

The nature of brotherly relationship between Turkland and Pakistan is exemplary and Turkland desires to extend the range of economic cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan is to play a leading role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and Turkish companies desire to work jointly with Pakistan to this effect.

exemplary = bir "example" oluşturacak nitelikte... to work jointly = birlikte çalışmak... to this/that effect = bu sonuca yönelik olarak...

Turkland is determined to extend a helping hand in every possible way for the welfare of their Afghan brothers. Turkland and Pakistan are already cooperating in several sectors, and mutual cooperation will further the brotherly ties already existing between the two countries.

welfare = refah... mutual = karşılıklı, ortak... reciprocal = (sadece) karşılıklı... Yani, mutual feeling = reciprocal feelings... Ama "our mutual friend, Mehmet" (ortak dostumuz Mehmet) diyebilirken, bunun yerine "reciprocal" sözcüğünü bu yapıda kullanamayız

"key" sözcüğünün Türkçedeki eşdeğer deyimde çoğu zaman "kilit" kavramı ile gerçekleştiğine dikkat ediniz: "He is our key man" Kilit adam mı, anahtar adam mı?... irrational (ir-ræ-şınıl) = akıl dışı, mantıksız. Kök sözcüğün "reason" olduğunu unutmayın: 1. neden, sebep; 1". mantık, muhakeme, akıl yürütme... blind faith = körü körüne inanma. ("faith" sözcüğü üzerinde bu sütunlarda çeşitli kereler durduk)

advantage (to gain/have an advantage over) = avantaj/üstünlük sağlamak veya avantajı/üstünlüğü olmak... "The enemy had an advantage over us in that they outnumbered us by two to one." (= sayıları iki katımızdı)

to the best advantage of = kendisi için en yüksek avantajı sağlayacak şekilde... çıkarları için...  They lost no time in using the unexpected results of the referendum to their best advantage."

turn sth to one's advantage = durumu kendi avantajına çevirmek... "The results came as a shock at first, but it wasn't long before they managed to turn the situation to their advantage."

adversity (in the face of adversity) = aleyhte koşullara rağmen, tüm güçlüklere karşın, kötü talihine karşı... "It's a brave man who smiles in the face of adversity."
