Machine translation, Dearest Members, is the only area that I know of that computers do not seem to promise much, for the simple reason that translation is not a science but an art. Consider the saying, "Out of sight, out of mind" ("Gözden uzak, gönülden uzak"): Give it to a computer for a translation and you will end up with "invisible maniac"!!! In this issue, I've hazarded my translations -- rather than brief notes -- for this week's quotations. Nothing would please me more than getting some severe criticism. For, the way I have been getting "praises only", I feel I am beginning to slip into complacency...

Here is the most interesting international news I've heard this week: Rumania is going to build a Dracula theme park "where it happened," in Transylvania, scheduled for completion in 2003. It will include souvenir shops as well as eating places where you can stop "for a bite"... I'm sure they must already been training the employees to say "Fang you, very much."

OBVIOUSLY THE MILITARY TOO ARE CONFUSED

Do MGK Secretary-General's words on the EU reveal a certain new attitude on the part of the TSK, though he was only disclosing his "personal" views? What is not easy to understand is his suggestion that Turkland conduct a policy "that encompasses Russia and Iran without ignoring the United States." This has caused a certain amount of confusion in minds, and a clarification is called for.

as far as we know = bildiğimiz kadarıyla... to ensure = sağlamak, sağlama almak, garantiye almak... unity = birlik, beraberlik... integrity = bütünlük

hasty = aceleci, acele... blindly = körlemesine...

justified = haklı... (to justify = haklılığını göstermek, haklı kılmak, fiilinden)... issue = (burada) konu, mesele... brand new = yepyeni... initiative = insiyatif, girişim... feasibility = fizibilite, olabilirlik, geçerlik... debatable = tartışmalı, tartışmaya açık... (to debate, "müzakere etmek" fiilinden)

LITTLE PROGRESS FOR TURKISH WOMEN

Yet another International Women’s Day and the second year in a new millennium in which Turkish women seem to have made little progress

It seems the dichotomy that tears through modern Turkland rages on: One half of Turkish women enjoying a lifestyle and social status that any woman in the leading countries of the West would envy, and the other half living in such appalling servitude to men that recalls "typical" middle-eastern societies...

dichotomy = ikilik... tears through = yırtıp ayıran... rages on = bütün şiddetiyle devam ediyor... to enjoy = (burada) sahip olmak, nimetlerinden yararlanmak... According to a report published by the state’s Women’s Status and Issues Directorate, while a sizeable percent of Turkish women have suffered from domestic violence, 23 percent were raped by their husbands, 18 percent are illiterate and 39 percent are unemployed.

The study showed that 34 percent of the acts of domestic violence was physical while the remaining 66 percent verbal. The incidence of violence was higher in shantytowns and poorer communities, the report said. The results of the study also draws attention to the fact that the number of Turkish men who physically abuse their wives is close to one million, which may represent as much as 15 percent of the married males population.

Statistics show that in Turkland 4 out of every 10 men believe that they would be right to physically "punish" their wife or children if they were "disobeyed". Conversely, the number of men who share some responsibility in housework and child care is as low as 20 percent.

The report states that only one out every three women who have the potential to work have regular jobs. It shows that by and large, professional Turkish women prefer academic and teaching careers; banking, civil service and secretarial jobs coming second.

Strangely enough, representing 33 percent of the academic work force, women seem to stay away from politics, with only 2.4 percent of the elected deputies in the parliament being women. This is a rather sad fact considering that 70 or 80 years ago that percentage used to be in the double digits when in most European countries women did not even have the right to vote...

THE PEARL OF LOVE

      At first the design of the Pearl of Love was less bold and subtle than it became later. At first it was smaller and more wrought and encrusted; there were many pierced screens and delicate clusters of rosy hues pillars, and the sarcophagus lay like a child that sleeps among flowers. The first dome was covered with green tiles, framed and held together by silver, but this was taken away again because it seemed close, because it did not soar grandly enough for the broadening imagination of the prince.

      For by this time he was no longer the graceful youth who had loved the girl queen. He was now a man, grave and intent, wholly set upon building the Pearl of Love. With every year of effort he had learnt new possibilities in arch and wall and buttress; he had acquired great power over the material he had to use and he had learnt of a hundred stones and hues and effects that he could never have thought of in the beginning.

"Wonderful are the miracles," they whispered, "that love can do," and all the women in the world, whatever other loves they had, loved the prince for the splendour of his devotion.

Christmas crackers = Aklımda ençok kalan şeylerden birisi... İngilizler niye bu adete bayılıyo, anlamak mümkün değil... Parlak kağıtlardan bir boru; iki kişi iki ucundan asılıp koparıyo; kocaman bir patlama eşliğinde ortaya küçük bir hediye ve berbat bir fıkra saçılıyoo... Zaten hayat hikayenizi yeniden yazmak ne yazık ki olanak dışı!... (Onun için üzüntüyü bırakıp, yaşamağa bakın, Değerli Üyeler...)

desmond = Ama hayat hep eğlenmek değil tabii. İşrete fazla dalıp, çalışmayı unutursanız üniversiteden bir "desmond" ile mezun olursunuz... Bu bir alt ikinci sınıf "honours degree" dir. Yani, iyi bir iş yerine, patronun papucunu alırsınız... "Honours degrees" tepeden aşağı şöyle sınıflanır: "First class" (kısaca, "a first"); "upper second" (kısaca, two-one); "lower second" (kısaca, "two-two" veya "desmond"); en dipte de "a third"!! directory enquiries = Aradığınız numara için telefon idaresinden danışabileceğiniz numara "192" dir... (Umarım hala öyledir. Bizdekiler o kadar çok değişiyor ki...)

dirty weekend = Şiddetle tavsiye ederim... Daimi yada geçici partnerinizi yanınıza alıp, haftasonu için ortadan kayboluyorsunuz... Gerisi size kalmış...

dodgem cars = Kısaca "dodgems"... Bendeniz luna parklarda tam bir "çarpışan otomobiller" hastası olduğum için, bu önemli bilgiyi de buraya yazayım dedim... Sanıyorum, Amerika'da "bumper cars" diyorlar...

Drink up! = Bu haftayı acıklı bir deyimle bitiriyoruz... Pub'larda, kapanış saatinden on dakika önce barmen "Last orders please" diye bağırmağa başlar... İşte günün en kötü saati... Hemen itişip kakışıp bir "pint" daha almağa bakarsınız. Saat "11:00" oldu mu, "It's TIME, please"... Yandınız... Artık içki alamazsınız. İçkinizi bitirmeniz için 20 dakikanız var: Bunun adı "drinking up time"... Yirmi dakika sonra "fish 'n chips" için sokaklarda olacaksınız. Özlemişim yahu...

Dear Husband, I too am 54 and by the time you receive this letter, I will be at the Breakwater Hotel with my handsome and virile 18-year-old boy toy. Since you are an accountant, you will appreciate that 54 hardly goes into 18 even once, but 18 goes into 54 no less than three times...

virile = 1. erkeklik gücü yüksek; 2. güçlü, yiğit... since you are an accountant = muhasebeci olduğuna göre (= hesabın kuvvetli olsa gerek, anlamında)... you will appreciate that = takdir edersin ki... hardly goes into = pek giremez, girer diyemeyiz...

NOT: "hardly" ve "scarcely" girdikleri tümcenin anlamını %98-99 oranında tersine çevirir; "barely" ise "ucu ucuna" anlamını katar. She works hard = Çok çalışır... She hardly (scarcely) does any work... = Hemen hemen hiç çalışmaz... We had hardly left the building = Binadan daha yeni çıkmıştık, daha tam çıkmış olduğumuz söylenemezdi...

She was hardly sixteen = 16 yaşında olduğu söylenemezdi... She was barely sixteen = Olsa olsa 16 yaşındaydı... Ucu ucuna 16 yaşındaydı... 16 olsa bile, daha yeni basmıştı...

The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter. Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couplet. Romeo's last wish was to be laid by Juliet.

hysterectomies (!) = "history plays" kastediliyor... Islamic pentameter (!) = "iambic pentameter" kastediliyor. (Yani, beş "I am" den oluşan vezin)... to be laid = en hafif tabiriyle "yatağa atılmak" (zamane çocuğu! Olayı başka nasıl ifade etsinki!)

Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained.

Donkey Hote = Don Quixote... Don Kişot... Meğer Milton yitirdiği Cennet'i, karısı ölünce yeniden kazanmış...

During the Renaissance America began. Christopher Columbus was a great navigator who discovered America while cursing about the Atlantic. His ships were called the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Fe.

cursing (küfretmek) = Kastedilen "cruising"... "Santa Maria" idi galiba, Değerli Üyeler, ama çocuk herhalde çok Pekos Bill okumuş...

Later, the Pilgrims crossed the ocean, and this was called Pilgrim's Progress. The winter of 1620 was a hard one for the settlers. Many people died and many babies were born. Captain John Smith was responsible for all this.

Pilgrim's Progress = John Bunyan'ın ünlü kitabı (tarih) ve tabii Amerika!ya ill göçenlerle hiç ilgisi yok... Ah, bütün bunların sorumlusu meğerse kimmiş!!

One of the causes of the Revolutionary War was the English put tacks in their tea. Also, the colonists would send their parcels through the post without stamps. Finally the colonists won the War and no longer had to pay for taxis.

tacks (raptiye-ler) = Kastedilen "tax", yani vergi. Meğerse Amerikan Bağımsızlık Savaşı, ingilizler çaya raptiye karıştırtırdıkları için çıkmış!! Koloni halkı paketlerini pulsuz göndermekte ısrar ediyorlarmış... Sonunda "taksilere beleş binme" hakkını elde etmişler: to pay taxes = vergi ödemek; to pay for taxis = taksiye para ödemek...
