With the new Civil Code urging couples on the verge of marriage to obtain health reports, the Health Ministry has decided to facilitate the procedures for getting reports from medical institutions. to urge = "acil ve önemlidir" çağrısında bulunmak. EVER SO BRITISH !!leaving do = "do" bu bağlamda "eğlence toplantısı", yani "party" anlamı taşıyor. Diyelim ki çalıştığınız şirketten bir arkadaşınız ayrılıyorsa böyle bir küçük veda partisi düzenlersiniz... letter box = Köşe başlarındaki kocaman kırmızı posta kutusu... USA karşılığı: mail box... licence fee = BBC'yi izlemeyeceğinize yemini billah da etseniz, televizyon izleyebilmek için, BBC adına bir ruhsat ücreti ödemek zorundasınız. Ne var ki bu fazla yüksek tutulmadığı gibi, BBC programlarının kalitesi ve reklamsız yayınlanmasının da garantisi... lift = Birinci anlamı "asansör" (USA: elevator)... Bilmeniz gereken en önemli şey, asansörde konuşmak çok ayıptır. İki arkadaş aranızda laflarken, asansöre bir üçüncü şahıs binecek olursa hemen susmalısınız... Sözcüğün ikinci anlamı ise bizdeki "otostop": "Can I give you a lift?" "Can you give me a lift?" Bu arada, eğer kent dışında "hitch-hike, hitch-hiking" (bizde, yine otostop) yapıyorsanız, Amerikalıların kullandığı "ride" sözcüğünü sakın kullanmayın: Cinsel bir teklif olarak anlaşılacaktır... local = en sık gittiğiniz "pub"... (Ama size en yakın olmak zorunda değil) Böylece, "I am off down the local", dediğinizde sizi elimizle koymuş gibi bulabiliriz. lounge bar = 70'li yıllara kadar hala çok yaygın bir uygulama ile, eskiden "pub" larda bir "saloon bar" bir de "lounge bar" vardı. "O", "ordinary" anlamına geliyor. Üniversiteye hazırlık olan "Sixth Form" öncesinde bu sınavları geçmek zorundaydınız. Daha sonra alacağınız (genelde 3) "A-levels" üniversite giriş gerekirliği niteliği taşıyordu. Şimdilerde, "GCSE" (General Certificate of Secondary Education) adı verilen bir sistem yürürlükte... Oxbridge = Oxford ve Cambridge üniversitelerini kapsayan kısaltılmış terim... [Eğer merak ediyorsanız, ben bu ikisine başvuracak kadar aklımı peynir ekmekle yememiştim: Manchester Üniversitesi'nde günümü gün etmekle yetindim...] |
