PRACTICAL ENGLISH FOR TURKS

A Free Bilingual Electronic Ezine

Issued Every Monday

04/08/02 - 0025

What would it take, Dearest Members, to make a palatable rendering of Turkish proverbs into English even remotely feasible? The answer must be: The collaborative effort of a (Turkish) Turkologist who has a good command of English and a native speaker of English who has a good understanding of Turkish on top of a poetic imagination... Over the weekend, I had the misfortune of surveying the sites offering "Turkish proverbs" in translation, and here stands a very saddened İzbul before you, disappointed -- nay, frustrated beyond any proverbial saying can express...

I will venture to offer a few sketchy translations of my own -- hastily concocted over the weekend --  just hoping they will serve to draw attention to this problem: The wildly under- and mis-represented Turkish traditional culture on the Internet... I am a tax-payer, and I demand to know what those people in the Ministry of Culture, all the haughty personages in our embassies, and all the high-handed academics in the numerous departments of Turkology in this country... yes, all these people: What are they so busy with that they cannot spare time to address such important cultural issues ?! ...İzbul

DOMESTIC NEWS
"GENOCIDE" MISTAKE !!

TDN Editorial by İlnur Çevik, 6 April 2002

Ecevit clearly got carried away and made remarks which he had to clarify at the DSP party gathering...

to get carried away = coşmak, coşku ile kendinden geçmek... to clarify = açıklığa kavuşturmak... gathering = toplantı...

We were surprised on Thursday when we heard Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit telling his Democratic Left Party (DSP) deputies in a weekly routine gathering that Israel was committing an act of genocide against the Palestinians.

commit genocide [cen-ısayd] = soykırım yapmak...

Such a statement coming from the prime minister of a country which is so sensitive to the word "genocide," we felt the prime minister would be more careful in what he said. After all, we are always up in arms when people accuse the Ottomans of having committed acts of genocide against the Armenians earlier this century. We even go as far as to threaten to cut our relations with countries whose parliaments approve anti-Turkish genocide resolutions. So when we heard his remarks we felt, "this man really means business."

after all = ne de olsa... to be up in arms = ayaklanmak (asıl anlamı silahlı ayaklanma)... to mean business = işi ciddi tutmak; konuya eğilmek...

Then, we asked, "If Ecevit was full of such views, why did he approve the modernization of Turkish tanks by Israel last week?" So we were really baffled.

baffled = şaşırıp kalmış (to baffle, fiilinden)...

It seems the prime minister got carried away at the gathering, and his fiery speech went a bit too far. This became apparent when the Turkish Foreign Ministry drew Ecevit's attention to the possible ramifications of his remarks. So the prime minister issued a written statement late Thursday which aimed at down-playing his charge of Israeli genocide.

fiery speech [fa-yıri] = ateşli konuşma... went a bit too far = biraz fazla ileri gitti... apparent [ı-pæ-rınt] = (burada) gözle görülür, belirgin...

In the statement, Ecevit said his remarks accusing military ally Israel of committing "genocide" against Palestinians reflected the region's growing anxiety over violence in the Middle East.

military ally [æ-lai] = askeri müttefik... anxiety [eng-za-iti] = endişe, tedirginlik...

"In this speech, I touched upon the grave results the events in the Middle East could lead to. My words reflected the anxiety felt in our country and our region."

touched upon = değindim... grave = ağır ciddi... (ayrıca, mezar)...

This is all fine, but not so convincing. After such remarks, he should not criticize the actions of some Islamists in Turkland who make similar remarks like him... Ecevit has to be much more careful in what he says and does.

This is all... etc. = Bütün bunlar iyi de, pek inandırıcı değil...

We heard very clearly at his address to the DSP deputies that he called Israeli Prime Minister Ariel "Sharon," "Sheraton," several times, which raised many eyebrows. This can be considered a slip of the tongue, but a prime minister cannot afford making the serious mistake of using the word "genocide" so freely...

raised many eyebrows = kaşların kalkmasına neden oldu (garip karşılama ve sorgulama, ifade ediyor)... slip of the tongue = dil sürçmesi...

If the Foreign Ministry had not warned Ecevit of his "mistake," would the prime minister have made such a written statement late Thursday night?

Ecevit's address, in general, was well balanced and to the point. He was right in charging that some Arab countries do not want a Palestinian state, that Sharon's tactics were playing into the hands of radical terrorist elements, and above all that Sharon was trying to get rid of Arafat. What is sad, is that the mention of "genocide" overshadowed all these...

to the point = konuya ilişkin, meselenin üstüne giden... to charge = suçlamak... play into the hands of = karşı tarafın işine yarayacak şekilde davranmak... To overshadow = gölgesi düşmek...

GALATASARAY BREAKS CLEAR

from, http://www.ntvmsnbc.com

Trabzon’s hopes of playing spoiler were spoiled by a Galatasaray running into a bit of form

It may have been Galatasaray’s first domestic win on the road since September but Cim Bom couldn’t have timed it better, its 2-0 defeat of Trabzonspor on Wednesday night taking it to the outright lead of the Turkish Super League.

to break clear = arayı açmak... couldn't have timed it better = daha iyi zamanlayamazlardı; en iyi zamanlama buydu...

Trabzonspor went into the match, postponed from three weeks ago to allow Galatasaray to prepare for its final Champions League game against Barcelona, with high hopes of further complicating the congested situation at the top of the table.

to postpone = ertelemek... (to cancel = iptal etmek)... further complicate = daha da karmaşık hale getirmek... congested = tıkanık... at the top of the table = sıralamanın tepesinde...

However, a hard running Galatasaray outfit brought these hopes to earth with a bump, through goals to Arif in the 14th minute and Hasan Şaş in the 89th. Indeed Şaş was all over the park, his pass setting up Arif for the first goal and his incisive running playing havoc with the Trabzon defence all night.

a hard running GS outfit = çok koşan bir GS takımı... indeed = gerçekten de... set up = hazırlamak, kurmak... incisive running = derinlemesine delici koşu (incisive = sivri, keskin, içine işleyen, delip geçici, vb... incision = yarma, deşme; tıpta "insizyon" = kesi)... play havoc with = altüst/darmadağın etmek... defence = defense...

Trabzon did have the better of part of the second half, applying continued pressure on the Galatasaray defence, with keeper Mondragon forced to make a number of strong saves.

keeper = goal-keeper, goalie... strong saves = zor kurtarışlar, iyi kurtarışlar (deriz biz)...

However, the home side could not translate pressure into an equalizer and then had to sit back as Şaş weaved a bit of magic just before full time, beating three defenders and slotting home a shot past Trabzon keeper Metin.

home side = evsahibi takım... (tersi: visiting side)... translate pressure into an equalizer = baskıyı bir beraberlik golüne çevirmek... weave a bit of magic = büyü gibi dokudu... just before full time = maç bitmeden az önce... to slot home = ağlara taktı, kaleye soktu...

Galatasaray’s win lifts it three points clear of second placed Fenerbahçe and five in front of losing Turkish Cup finalist Beşiktaş. If Cim Bom can continue to display the form of Wednesday night, they would have to be considered favourites to take the title. It is just a question of if.

three points clear of second placed FB = ikinci sıradaki FB'nin üç puan önünde... to take the title = şampiyon olmak... It is just a question of if... Bir önceki cümledeki "eğer" sözcüğüne gönderim yapılıyor...

HIDDINK WARNS GÜNEŞ

South Korea coach Guus Hiddink sent out a warning to his Turkish counterpart Şenol Güneş that he cannot afford to be complacent about his team's prospects at the World Cup, where Turkland is drawn in an opening round group against Brazil, Costa Rica and China.

counterpart = karşı tarafta eşdeğer mevkideki adam, mümasil... complacent = halinden fazlasıyla memnun olarak gevşemiş... prospects = umutlar, beklentiler... is drawn = kur'a ile düştü...

"I think Turkland will be the second team to come through the group after Brazil," Hiddink said. "However, at major events like this, small nations can cause big surprises. In particular, I advise Şenol Güneş to watch out for Costa Rica because in its qualifying matches it played excellent soccer against very strong opponents."

watch out = dikkatli, olmak, temkinli olmak... opponent [o-pou-nınt] = rakip...

South Korea drew a recent friendly against Turkland 0-0 in Germany.

friendly = hazırlık maçı, dostluk karşılaşması...

all but = neredeyse, hemen hemen (= almost, nearly)... The work was all but finished when they came to collect their tools and we didn't keep them waiting for long.

all the same = 1) yine de; 2) farketmez... Maybe he doesn't want to hear what I have to say to him, but I'll drop by and apologize personally all the same...

for all (that) I know = benim bildiğim kadarıyla ("artık nekadar biliyorsam yada ne derece önemi varsa" anlamına)... She doesn't live there any more and she hasn't been seen in the neighbourhood either, for all that I know...

if all goes well = herşey yolunda gidecek olursa... We should finish the job by this time tomorrow if all goes well...

all too soon = olması gerekenden daha erken, gereksiz ölçüde veya zarar verecek derecede daha önceden... The whole operation was a failure because the alarm was sounded all too soon...

blind alley = çıkmaz sokak... The chase came to a quick end when the thieves ran into a blind alley...

alley cat / stray dog = sokak kedisi, başıboş köpek, sokak köpeği... Kötü Kedi Şero is the leader (topcat) of alley cats around Cihangir...

(right) up one's alley = birisinin kuvvetli, bilgili, yada vb. olduğu alan, kendi çöplüğü... He retired last month and we all miss him very much. Teaching was right up his alley... Your friend, on the other hand, must have known that foreign languages were not at all up his alley...

in alliance with = ittifak halinde... Italy was in alliance with Germany before and during the Second World War...

allow for = hesaba katmak, dikkate almak... You should also allow for any delays that may be caused by bad weather conditions...

all-round = dört dörtlük... This is a book informed by all-round ignorance... This is certainly the best all-round guide to boating that you can buy... Joey was an all-round Mr. Nice Guy... Of course we all know that Morris was a wonderful all-round man, but the act of walking round him has always tired me. (Max Beerbohm)

all-round sportsman = birçok dalda başarılı, her yönüyle sporcu... He was chosen the best all-round sportsman in 1996-97... He is definitely one of the finest all-round sportsmen this country has ever produced.

make an, any, no, etc allusion to = atıfta, gönderimde bulunmak, sözünü etmek... You must make no allusions to ducks in the Sultan's presence... (You can't expect me to make up meaningful sample sentences all the way through...)

ally oneself with = ile ittifak kurmak, o kampa katılmak... He was stupid enough to ally himself with lost causes all through his life... He was a man who had turned his back on a privileged family to ally himself with the landless poor...

EVER SO BRITISH !!

time ("Could you tell me the time, please?") = Britanya adalarında "half ten" dediğinizde bunun anlamı "on buçuk" tur. Yine, Britanyalıların kullandığı "quarter to ten" ve "quarter past ten" deyimleri için ABD karşılıkları "quarter of ten" ve "quarter after ten" yada, daha büyük olasılıkla "ten fifteen" olacaktır.

trainspotter = Benim hayatta anlayamamış olduğum bir hobi grubu. Bunlar nerede nezaman bir tiren görseler, hemen defterlerini çıkarıp lokomotifin numarasını dikkatle not ederler...

tube = underground = Londra'daki metro sistemine verilen ad.

Merhabanın arkasından hemen "It's a beautiful day today, isn't it?" yada "It's terrible, isn't it?" gelir... Yanıtınız, standart "Yes, it is," olmalı...

Kısacası, birisiyle bir daha görüşmeyi düşünmüyorsanız, "No, it isn't" deyiverirsiniz, olur biter: Adınız da "a little peculiar" a çıkar...

CLEAN JOKE OF THE DAY
HOW MANY MILES FROM DUBLIN ??

Three Irishmen, Paddy, Sean and Shamus, were stumbling home from the pub late one night and found themselves on the road which led past the old graveyard.

to stumble = sendelemek... were stumbling home = sendeleye sendeleye eve gitmekte idiler... on the road which led past the old graveyard = eski mezarlığın önünden geçen yolda... (lead - led - led, fiili ile)

"Come have a look over here," says Paddy, "it's Michael O'Grady's grave, God bless his soul. He lived to the ripe old age of 87."

ripe = olgun... (daha çok meyveler filan için kullanılır)... "ripe old age" bir deyim... "Mature" sözcüğünde ise, yaştan çok, "başça" olgun kavramı var... "She's very nice, but a little overripe!!" (ama biraz geçkin -- çok zalimce bir söz...)

"That's nothing", says Sean, "here's one named Patrick
O'Tool, it says here that he was 95 when he died."

That's nothing. = O da birşey mi?

Just then, Shamus yells out, "Good God, here's fella that got to be 145!" "What was his name?" asks Paddy.
Shamus stumbles around a bit, awkwardly lights a match to see what else is written on the stone marker, and answers back, "Miles, from Dublin."

just then = tam o sırada... to yell = bağırmak (bağlama göre, seslenmek, çığlığı basmak filan gibi anlamlar kazanabilir -- "out" burada bir pekiştirici... "Drink your tea" yerine "Drink up your tea" çok daha doğal)... Good God! = Aman Allahım! (Yine bağlamdan dolayı tahmin ettiğimiz ses tonuyla burada "Yok yahu, yapma yahu, olamaz" gibi bir anlam kazanıyor)... fella = fellow = (burada) adam, herif... awkwardly = beceriksizce, zorbela... stone marker = mezar taşı...

DIRTY JOKE OF THE DAY
TARZAN AND JANE

When Jane initially met Tarzan in the jungle, she was
attracted to him and during her questions about his life. She asked him how he had sex.

"Tarzan not know sex" he replied. Jane explained to him what sex was. Tarzan said, "oh, Tarzan use hole in trunk of tree".

initially = başlangıçta... jungle [can-gıl] = balta girmemiş orman... a hole in the trunk of a tree = ağaç gövdesinde bir delik (Tabii, Tarzanca'da "article"lar filan uçup gitmiş)

Horrified she said, "Tarzan you have it all wrong, but
I will show you how to do it properly". She took off her clothes and laid down on the ground. "Here", she said, "you must put it here".

horrified = dehşete düşmüş olarak... properly = uygun, münasip, olması gerektiği biçimde; doğru dürüst...

Tarzan removed his loincloth, stepped closer, and then
gave her an almighty kick in the crotch.

To remove = (burada) çıkarmak... loincloth = edep yerlerini örten bez parçası... to step = adım atmak... stepped closer = daha yakına geldi...  an almighty kick = kocaman, çok güçlü bir tekme... crotch = apış arası...

Jane rolled around in agony. Eventually managed to
gasp, "what did you do that for"?

"Tarzan check for bees".

rolled around in agony = acı içinde yuvarlandı... eventually [i-ven-çuıli] =sonunda, nihayet... manage + mastar = becerdi, başardı... to gasp = zorlukla nefes almak, büyük bir hava açlığı ile içine nefes çekmek... "Tarzan check for bees" = Tarzan arı var mı yok mu kontrol ediyor (Tabii yine Tarzanca ifade ediliyor)...

FOLK WISDOM

SAYING NICE THINGS BEHIND PEOPLES' BACK !!

Kinds words would exhort even the snake out of its hole -- Turkish Proverb

I can't say he's the sharpest knife in the drawer! = He's quite dull... Donuk zekalı...

She must've got into the gene pool while the lifeguard wasn't watching.

He has a room-temperature IQ. = Oda ısısında zekası var...

Oh, she's a gross ignoramus -- 144 times worse than an ordinary ignoramus. = gross = 1) çok kaba, çok büyük; 2) 12X12 düzine = 144... ignoramus [ignı-ra:-mıs] cahil, cahil kişi...

Yes, he has a photographic memory -- but with the lens cover glued on.

She is definitely a prime candidate for natural de-selection.

He is as bright as Alaska in December. = Aralık ayında Alaska kadar parlak!..

Even one-celled organisms would outscore her in IQ tests. = Zeka testlerinde tek-hücreli organizmalar bile ondan daha yüksek puan alır... (Herhangi bir fiilin başına gelen "out" önekinin işlevi için şu örneklere bakınız: to outnumber = sayıca üstün olmak... to outclass = sürklase etmek... to outlive = diğeri veya diğerlerinden daha uzun yaşamak... to outshine = gölgede bırakmak (parlaklıktan yana geride bırakmak)...

He must've fallen out of the family tree.
Aile ağacından yuvarlanmış olsa gerek...

She has two brains; one is lost and the other is out looking for it.

If brains were taxed he'd get a rebate. = Eğer beyinlerden vergi alınsa, ona vergi iadesi verilir...

If you give her a penny for her thoughts, you'd get change. = Kafasındakileri 1 kuruşa satın alsanız, üstüne bir miktarda para üstü alırsınız......

People normally drink from the fountain of knowledge; he only gargled. = fountain of knowledge = bilgi çeşmesi... He only gargled = O sadece gargara yapmış...
