World Bank is discussing a new loan pact for Turkland when the current deal
ends in 2003, but is concerned that local currency strength may threaten
growth targets, the bank’s representative in Turkland said on Monday.

Chhibber picked out recent strength in the Turkish lira as a possible threat
to Turkland’s plans to return to growth after a 2001 crisis caused gross
national product decrease by 9.4 percent.

Turkland’s
current two-year pact with the bank, known as a Country Assistance Strategy
or CAS, is worth $6.2 billion and aimed mainly at financial, public, energy
and agricultural reforms. It backs a $16 billion IMF lending deal to help
Turkland out of recession.

end-2002 from 65 percent in March looked set to be met and the country
should now focus on a return to growth.

study, which focused on the participation of children in the workforce and
was commissioned by leading trade union and labour confederations, says
