to step down = görevi bırakmak... to bear fruit = meyve (=sonuç) vermek...

ULSAN, South Korea - (Associated Press) - Turkland's soccer team arrived Saturday at the World Cup after nearly a half-century of frustration. After a disastrous 0-15-1 World Cup qualifying stretch that spanned most of the 1980s, Turkland has qualified for its second World Cup and first since 1954.

CHUNKS OF WISDOM OR DROPLETS OF BANALITY ?

Pasadena, California (CNN) - Instruments aboard the Mars Odyssey spacecraft have detected substantial amounts of hydrogen just under the surface of the planet Mars, according to mission scientists. They say they believe the hydrogen is most likely in the form of water ice.
Researchers announced preliminary findings from Mars Odyssey in March, when early data from an instrument called the gamma ray spectrometer showed evidence of vast deposits of hydrogen in Mars' southern hemisphere.
preliminary findings = ön bulgular (bazen, ilk bulgular şeklinde de çeviri verebilir)...
Full scientific details are to be published in the May 31 edition of the journal Science. Additionally, NASA plans to hold a news conference on Thursday to announce more specifics about the quantities and distribution of the ice.
Experts say the confirmation of ice on Mars could answer a question that's nagged them for years: Despite the fact that the surface of Mars now appears dry as bone, much physical evidence -- including channels on the landscape -- suggests that water once flowed there.
Researchers have long been puzzled about where the water went. Now, the new findings suggest that it could have gone underground.
DOES LIFE EXIST UPON THE RED PLANET ?
Does the possible presence of water on Mars mean life exists there? Scientists say it raises the chances, but it's by no means conclusive.
raise the chances = olasılığı arttırıyor... by no means = asla, hiç bir biçimde... conclusive = kesin (to conclude, bitirmek - sonlandırmak fiilinden: "tartışmayı sonlandıran" kavramı)...
If life exists there now, it's most likely in the form of some type of microbe. Experts say the best chance for finding conclusive evidence of such life would involve a "sample return mission." A unmanned probe would land on the planet, scoop up a soil sample that might harbor these Martian microbes, and then return it to earth for analysis.
conclusive evidence = kesin kanıtlar... sample return mission = örnekler alarak geri getirilen bir görev uçuşu... unmanned = insansız... scoop up = kürekleyip kaldırmak... to harbour = sinesinde barındırmak (liman) kavramından...
The new Mars Odyssey data on water distribution could help scientists target such a probe to land in a promising area. NASA has discussed launching a sample return mission this decade, but so far none is scheduled.
so far none is scheduled = şu ana değin programlanmış bir uçuş yok...
Mars Odyssey was launched on April 7, 2001, and reached Mars in October. The craft began returning data in February and is scheduled to remain on duty in Mars orbit until August 2004.

LOOKING FOR A MAN
The local classified ads columns read: "Rich widow looking for a man to share life and fortune with the following qualifications: 1. Won't beat me up... 2. Won't run away... 3. Has to be great in bed...
read = yazıyordu ["diye okunuyordu" kavramından]... rich widow = zengin dul... to share life and fortune = hayatımı ve servetimi paylaşacak... following qualifications = aşağıdaki nitelikler...
For several months, her phone rang off the hook, her doorbell was ringing constantly, she received tons of mail...all to no avail. None of the men seemed to meet her qualifications.
rang off the hook = durmadan çalıyordu ["ahize çengelinden düşüyordu" kavramından: eski kancalı duvar telefonlarını gözünüzde canlandırınız. Nitekim "to hang up" deyimi de "telefonu lapatmak" anlamına gelmiyor mu? Yani, ahizeyi yerine asmak]... to no avail = hiçbir sonuç vermeksizin...

THE GEOGRAPHY OF A WOMAN
Between the ages of 18 - 21 a woman is like Africa or Australia. She is half discovered, half wild and naturally beautiful with bushland around the fertile deltas. ["bush" sözcüğü argoda "pubic hair" için sık kullanılan bir sözcük...]
Between the ages of 21 - 30 a woman is like America or Japan. Completely discovered, very well developed and open to trade especially with countries with cash or cars.
Between the ages of 30 - 35, she is like India or Spain. Very hot, relaxed and convinced of its own beauty.
Between the ages of 35 - 40 a woman is like France or Argentina. She may have been half destroyed during the war but can still be a warm and desirable place to visit.
Between the ages of 40 - 50 she is like Yugoslavia or Iraq. She lost the war and is haunted by past mistakes. Massive reconstruction is now necessary. [is haunted by etc. = (burada) geçmiş hatalarının pişmanlığını yaşıyor: "hatıralar onu bir heyula kılığında sık sık ziyaret ediyor" kavramından...]
Between the ages of 50 - 60 she is like Russia or Canada. Very wide, quiet and the borders are practically unpatrolled but the frigid climate keeps people away. [to patrol = devriye çıkarmak veya gezmek... unpatrolled = devriye çıkarılmıyor, yabancılara karşı engelleyici tedbir yok: "yolgeçen hanı"...]
Between the ages of 60 - 70 a woman is like England or Mongolia. With a glorious and all conquering past but alas no future. [İyi ki bizi bu gruba eklememişler!...]
After 70, they become Albania or Afghanistan. Everyone knows where it is, but no one wants to go there.
