GLOBALIZATION & THE NATION STATEWHERE DO WE STAND?AN OVERVIEW -- 1DİKKAT: Bu metnin geliştirilmiş yeni baskısı için, Man, at the dawn of the 21st century, has created a new world. The future is full of hopes, worries, uncertainties, dreams and thrills. dawn (down okunur) = şafak... art the dawn of = başında, başlarında... thrill = heyecan, zevk ve heyecan... The revolutionary developments in the fields of communication and transportation, in addition to other developments brought on by science and technology, have transformed the world, making it a smaller place. Mankind has the world virtually in the palm of its hand. We are now in a position where we have much more of a broader outlook. Mankind has become global in all of his deeds. virtually = almost = hemen hemen, neredeyse, %99.99 oranında... palm= elin ayası... in the palm of ... etc = avuçlarının içinde... outlook = genel görünüm (burada manzara, görüş alanı anlamında)... deed = eylem, yapılan şey ("do" fiilinden ad)... So where do we go from here? What is to happen from this point onwards? Bipolarization, namely East versus West and North versus South, has in large part lost its significance. The world will become a place where borders no longer exist. bipolarization = iki kutupluluk... significance = önem ve anlam, "mana ve ehemmiyet"... a place where borders no longer exist = artık sınırların olmadığı bir yer... ["no longer", "any longer", "no more", "any more" deyimlerini "ARTIK I-IH" diye çevirin: I don't love me any more... I love you no more] We will come face to face with a world where changes come at the speed of light and where events that unfold take place on several planes at the same time. to unfold = peşpeşe açılarak ortaya çıkmak... plane = düzlem, düzey... at the same time = aynı anda, birlikte... This will be an altogether different world and generations that follow will be confronted with the task of both shaping and administering such a world. altogether = tümüyle (SÖZCÜĞÜN BU KULLANIMINI MUTLAKA NOT EDİNİZ)... to confront = yüzyüze gelmek (genelde hasmane bir şekilde, karşı durmak anlamında)... to administer = yönetmek, hükumet etmek... In order to better understand what I have just stated, let us go back in history a little. There are enormous differences between the state of the world at the beginning of the 20th century and the state of the world at the end of it. Grand technological discoveries such as the telescope, microscope, steam, electricity, telephone, television, jet engine, nuclear energy, satellites and the Internet have brought about developments which were previously unimaginable. With these developments, the world has been divided into two: strong, rich and developed counties with powerful weapons, on the one hand, and countries that live under very harsh circumstances on the other. harsh = sert, haşin, acımasız... It is largely Europe that has been the centre of the all the developments that have taken place in the last two centuries. Westphalia, which gave birth to the concept of equal sovereign states, was followed by the French Revolution. This, in turn, was succeeded by "nations," and "nation-states" comprised of free citizens. sovereign = egemen (sv-rın okunur)... in turn = Bu deyimi Türkçe'ye herzaman de, da (dahi) ile çeviriniz. Bu da, bunun da... comprise of = -dan oluşmak... In addition to science and technology, there have also been major advances in the areas of education, health and industrialization. Two horrific wars, the first beginning in 1914 and the second in 1939 erupted in Europe. These wars resulted in the loss of millions of lives, disintegration of empires, the end of colonialism and the birth of independent states. Then came . ideological conflict. It started once again in Europe and later spread to other countries of the world. horrific = dehşet verici, korkunç, iğrenç... disintegration = parçalanma... There was fascism. There was communism. And there was democracy, which was left in a situation where it had no choice but to defend itself. a situation ...etc. = kendini savunmaktan başka bir seçeneği olmadığı bir durumda... It is a well-known fact that ideological conflicts rest on issues such as how nations are to be governed, how development is to be brought about and how wealth is to be achieved. to rest on = üzerine dayanmak, -a dayanmak... The United Nations, which was founded in 1945, has made significant contributions to the preservation of world peace and to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Founded by around 50 countries, the United Nations now has 190 members. resolution = (burada) çözüm... (Ayrıca, "kararlılık" ve "karar sureti" gibi anlamları da vardır)... RUDE PARROTOn reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for a coffee whereupon the parrot squawks, "And get me a coke, you cow!" The stewardess, flustered, brings back a coke for the parrot and forgets the coffee. on + ad fiil (gerund, fiilin -ing almış ve ad işlevi taşıyan türevi) = Tıpkı Türkçe'deki gibi: "Ulaşması, varması üzerine, ulaşınca/varınca"... to strap = kemer, vb gibi şeylerle bağlayarak raptetmek (buradaki "in", koltuğa iyice yerleştirilmiş olduğu kavramını aktarıyor)... stewardess = hostes... (denizcilikteki "kadın kamarot" kavramından)... to squawk = genellikle kuşgillerde "bağırmak, çığlık atmak" anlamında kullanılan fiil... you cow = "seni inek seni"... flustered = sinirli, heyecanlı ve kafası karışmış... When this omission is pointed out to her, the parrot drains its glass and bawls "And get me another coke dogface!" Quite upset, the girl comes back shaking with another coke but still no coffee. omission = düşürme, devre dışı bırakma; burada, unutulma, yerine getirilmeme... to drain = burada, sonuna kadar boşaltmak... to bawl = yüksek sesle (ve kavgacı edayla) bağırmak, haykırmak... comes back shaking = sinirinden titreyerek döndü... still no coffee = kahve yine yoktu... Unaccustomed to such slackness the man tries the parrot's approach. "I've asked you twice for a coffee! Go and get it now you old goat!" slackness = gevşeklik... The next moment both he and the parrot have been wrenched up and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly stewards. Plunging downwards the parrot turns to him and says, "For someone who can't fly, you've got guts!" wrenched up = yerlerinden koparılır gibi kaldırılıp... burly = iriyarı, güçlü kuvvetli... plunge = dalışa geçmek; atlamak, dalmak; burada "düşmek"... You've got guts = çok cesursun... You haven't got the guts = O cesaret sende ne arar?! |

Devrik kuruluşa dikkat ediniz... looking like ...etc. = üstünden tren geçmiş gibiydi... in a sling = boynundan askıya alınmış... cut and bruised = yara bere ve morartılar... walking with a limp = topallıyordu... "What
happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender. Sean =
"Şoun" okuyunuz... bartender = barmen... "That
little shit, O'Conner" = O'Conner denen o ufak tefek pislik
