Dearest Members... I will not talk of politics this week. I'll just point out that politics indeed make strange bedfellows and append a little "blondie" joke to it... A blonde (still quite blondie apparently, though bodily a little over-ripe now) suspects her future husband of cheating on her, so she goes out and buys a gun. She goes to his apartment unexpectedly and when she opens the door she finds him in the arms of a gorgeous brunette...

I should have told you that one hemisphere of whatever brains our blonde lady has is perennially on holiday anyway. Now the other hemisphere, too, goes out to look for her wayward companion... She opens her purse, takes out the gun, and as she does so, she becomes confused and points it to her own head. The husband-to-be yells, "No, honey, don't do it." The blonde replies, "Shut up, you're next!"... Congratulations to our boys out there in Japan who have somehow managed to win again despite our illustrious "dim Sun" and "sleep-walking King"... izbul

from the online edition of  The Star, Malaysia

İSTANBUL, Turkland (Associated Press): A Turkish pleasure boat carrying recent university graduates collided with a ship carrying steel in İstanbul's Bosphorus straits, leaving four people missing and 15 others injured, reports said.

pleasure boat = gezinti teknesi... to collide with = ile çarpışmak... collision = çarpışma... missing = kayıp...

The Yeni Beşiktaş 2, carrying 26 people celebrating their graduation from a local university, sank after colliding with the Cambodian-flagged Modisk 3 near the residential district of Kuruçeşme, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Bu paragrafın anlamı: Anadolu Ajansı, öğrencilere dayanarak, ilk anda akıbetleri bilinmeyen iki yolcunun kıyıya çıkmış olduklarını bildirdi...

The cause of the crash was under investigation, but the Turkish captain of the Yeni Beşiktaş 2 said that the Cambodian ship did not have its lights on, private NTV television reported.

to be under investigation = araştırılıyor olmak...

The 15 injured were treated at a nearby hospital and released, NTV said.

The Bosphorus, which bisects Istanbul, is one of the world's most dangerous waterways. Accidents are frequent in the narrow waterway, which is the sole passage between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

to dissect = kesip biçip parçalarına ayırmak... to bisect = ikiye ayırmak... waterway = geçiş yolu... sole = yegane, tek...

The Modisk 3, which was carrying steel from the Ukraine to Italy, did not sustain serious damage and was taken to a local port while authorities investigate.

On display will be art works from the Ottoman era, paintings and other valuable artifacts collected over the years by the Sabancıs

Devrik tümceye dikkat ediniz... artifact (veya, artefact) = insan eliyle yapılmış şey; genelde eski insan topluluklarından kalma eşyalar yada geleneksel sanat ürünleri için kullanılır...

June 11- The Sabancı University’s Sakıp Sabancı Museum, located in the historical Atlı Köşk in İstanbul’s Emirgan district, is to open its doors to the public on Tuesday.

is to open its doors = kapılarını açacak (to be + mastar = gelecek zaman bildirir... Ayrıca özellikle üçüncü kişilerin emir ve direktiflerini aktarmakta da sık başvurulan bir yapıdır: You are to go and see the boss this afternoon...)

The museum will serve to display the rich collection of leading Turkish businessman Sakıp Sabancı. On display will be some 280 works of art, including precious examples from the Ottoman calligraphy and paintings from the 15th to 20th centuries.

to display = sergilemek, göstermek... leading = önde gelen... calligraphy = hat sanatı...

The Ottoman calligraphy works have previously been on show at the famous international New York Metropolitan Museum and Paris’ Louvre Museum.

have previously been on show = daha önce sergilenmiş bulunuyor... Paris' = 'in ekinin gösterilişine dikkat ediniz...

Sabancı, in private opening of the museum earlier this week, stressed the importance of private collections and museums, adding that while his family is saddened to leave the historical building that has served as their home for many years, they were happy to have accomplished their dream of opening a museum.

is saddened = üzüntü duyuyor, üzüntülü... to accomplish = başarmak, başarı ile sonuçlandırmak...

DİKKAT: Bu metnin geliştirilmiş yeni baskısı için,

Man, at the dawn of the 21st century, has created a new world. The future is full of hopes, worries, uncertainties, dreams and thrills.

dawn (down okunur) = şafak... art the dawn of = başında, başlarında... thrill = heyecan, zevk ve heyecan...

The revolutionary developments in the fields of communication and transportation, in addition to other developments brought on by science and technology, have transformed the world, making it a smaller place.

Mankind has the world virtually in the palm of its hand. We are now in a position where we have much more of a broader outlook. Mankind has become global in all of his deeds.

virtually = almost = hemen hemen, neredeyse, %99.99 oranında... palm= elin ayası... in the palm of ... etc = avuçlarının içinde... outlook = genel görünüm (burada manzara, görüş alanı anlamında)... deed = eylem, yapılan şey ("do" fiilinden ad)...

So where do we go from here? What is to happen from this point onwards?

Bipolarization, namely East versus West and North versus South, has in large part lost its significance. The world will become a place where borders no longer exist.

bipolarization = iki kutupluluk... significance = önem ve anlam, "mana ve ehemmiyet"... a place where borders no longer exist = artık sınırların olmadığı bir yer... ["no longer", "any longer", "no more", "any more" deyimlerini "ARTIK I-IH" diye çevirin: I don't love me any more... I love you no more]

We will come face to face with a world where changes come at the speed of light and where events that unfold take place on several planes at the same time.

to unfold = peşpeşe açılarak ortaya çıkmak... plane = düzlem, düzey... at the same time = aynı anda, birlikte...

This will be an altogether different world and generations that follow will be confronted with the task of both shaping and administering such a world.

altogether = tümüyle (SÖZCÜĞÜN BU KULLANIMINI MUTLAKA NOT EDİNİZ)... to confront = yüzyüze gelmek (genelde hasmane bir şekilde, karşı durmak anlamında)... to administer = yönetmek, hükumet etmek...

In order to better understand what I have just stated, let us go back in history a little.

There are enormous differences between the state of the world at the beginning of the 20th century and the state of the world at the end of it.

Grand technological discoveries such as the telescope, microscope, steam, electricity, telephone, television, jet engine, nuclear energy, satellites and the Internet have brought about developments which were previously unimaginable.

With these developments, the world has been divided into two: strong, rich and developed counties with powerful weapons, on the one hand, and countries that live under very harsh circumstances on the other.

harsh = sert, haşin, acımasız...

It is largely Europe that has been the centre of the all the developments that have taken place in the last two centuries.

Westphalia, which gave birth to the concept of equal sovereign states, was followed by the French Revolution. This, in turn, was succeeded by "nations," and "nation-states" comprised of free citizens.

sovereign = egemen (sv-rın okunur)... in turn = Bu deyimi Türkçe'ye herzaman de, da (dahi) ile çeviriniz. Bu da, bunun da... comprise of = -dan oluşmak...

In addition to science and technology, there have also been major advances in the areas of education, health and industrialization.

Two horrific wars, the first beginning in 1914 and the second in 1939 erupted in Europe. These wars resulted in the loss of millions of lives, disintegration of empires, the end of colonialism and the birth of independent states. Then came . ideological conflict. It started once again in Europe and later spread to other countries of the world.

horrific = dehşet verici, korkunç, iğrenç... disintegration = parçalanma...

There was fascism. There was communism. And there was democracy, which was left in a situation where it had no choice but to defend itself.

a situation ...etc. = kendini savunmaktan başka bir seçeneği olmadığı bir durumda...

It is a well-known fact that ideological conflicts rest on issues such as how nations are to be governed, how development is to be brought about and how wealth is to be achieved.

to rest on = üzerine dayanmak, -a dayanmak...

The United Nations, which was founded in 1945, has made significant contributions to the preservation of world peace and to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Founded by around 50 countries, the United Nations now has 190 members.

resolution = (burada) çözüm... (Ayrıca, "kararlılık" ve "karar sureti" gibi anlamları da vardır)...

Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything. -- Josef Stalin

to cast a vote = oyunu vermek... to count the votes = oyları saymak... [Çocukluğumda en nefret edilen diktatör olmasına şaşmamak gerek -- gerçi o dönemlerde bizim seçimler de şaibelerden pek uzak sayılamazdı ya!...]

[When asked to name the chief qualification a politician should have]: "It's the ability to foretell what will happen tomorrow, next month, and next year --- and to explain afterward why it didn't happen." -- Winston Churchill

when asked to name = belirtmesi, adını vermesi, sayması kendisinden istenildiğinde... to foretell = önceden bilmek, söylemek; tahmin etmek... [ Winston Churchill'in özellikle söylev ve özdeyişlerini, kusursuz İngilizce örnek metinler olarak arayıp okumanızı şiddetle öneririm. -- Araştırma motoru  adresinden kolaylıkla bulabilirsiniz.]

It may not always be easy, convenient, or politically correct to stand for truth and right, but it is the right thing to do. Always. -- M. Russell Ballard

convenient = uygun, rahatlık ve kolaylık sağlayan... politically correct = Ahlaken şaibeli ama siyasi açıdan doğru... to stand for = 1) temsil etmek; 2) savunmak, arkasında olmak...

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. -- Ronald Reagan

the oldest profession = en eski meslek (= fahişelik)... the second-oldest = ikinci en eski (birlikte bir sıfat niteliği ile "profession" sözcüğünü niteledikleri için tire ile birleştirilmiş durumdalar)... have come to realize = sonunda/giderek anladım ki... bears a very close resemblance = çok büyük bir benzerlik taşıyor...

Politicians are like diapers. They should both be changed frequently and for the same reason. -- Anonymous

diaper = çocuk bezi...

A politician will do anything to keep his job and even become a patriot. -- William Randolph Hearst (ünlü Amerikalı gazete yayıncısı, 1863-1951)

"to be" fiili durum bildirirken, "to get" ve "to become" süreç belirtirler... Son ikisini Türkçe'ye çoğu zaman "...hale/haline gelmek", "-laşmak" ile çevirebilirsiniz. Ama burada ben şöyle çevirirdim: Bir bakarsınız, yurtsever bile kesilmiş...

The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice. -- Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)

Bizi yokedecekler şunlardır: ilkesiz siyaset, vicdanı sollayan eğlence, çalışmadan zenginlik, bilgili ama karaktersiz insanlar, ahlaktan yoksun bir işdünyası, insanlığı alt plana itmiş bilim, özveriden yoksun bir din anlayışı... BİZ YANMIŞIZ; DOSTLAR!...

This old lady at the mall really took her time pulling out of her parking space; I didn't think she was ever going to leave. Finally her car began to move and she slowly started to back out of her spot. I backed up a little more to give her plenty of room to pull out. Great, I thought, she's finally leaving.

this old lady = bir yaşlı hanım [öykü anlatım dili]... really took her time pulling out of her parking space = park yerinden çıkmakta geciktikçe gecikti... to back out of her spot = yerinden gerisin geri... I backed up a little more = arabamı biraz daha geri aldım... to pull out = çıkması için...

Suddenly this black Camaro came flying up the other side and pulled into my spot. This guy jumped out, flipped me the finger, and jogged off into the mall.

this black Camaro = siyah bir Camaro [öykü anlatım dili]... flipped me the finger = bana parmak işareti yaptı... jogged off into the mall = koşar adımlarla uzaklaşarak alışveriş merkezine daldı...

I noticed that the Camaro had a For Sale sign in the window with a phone number on it...

A couple of days later I was at home sitting at my desk. I had just gotten off the phone after calling 823-XXXX and yelling, "You're an asshole!" (It's really easy to call him now; I have his number on speed dial!) I noticed the phone number of the guy with the black Camaro lying on my desk and thought I'd better call that guy, too.

the guy with the black Camaro = siyah Camaro'su olan herif...

After a couple of rings someone answered the phone and said, "Hello." I said, "Is this the man with the black Camaro for sale?"

"Yes, it is."

"Can you tell me where I can see it?"

"Yes, I live at 1802 West 34th Street. It's a yellow house and the car's parked right out front."

I said, "What's your name?"

"My name is Don Hanson."

"When's a good time to catch you, Don?"

"I'm home in the evenings."

"Listen Don, can I tell you something?"

"Don, you're an asshole!" And I slammed the phone down. Then I added Don Hanson's number to my speed dial...

[ to be continued in our next issue ]

Evet, doğru tahmin ettiniz. Öyküde, size "asshole" lerin telefon numaralarını da veriyorlar. Ama ben bu numaraları, uluslararası bir skandala yol açmamak için sansürledim...

Don't You Wish They, Too, Would Go On A Summer Break ?!

On reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for a coffee whereupon the parrot squawks, "And get me a coke, you cow!" The stewardess, flustered, brings back a coke for the parrot and forgets the coffee.

on + ad fiil (gerund, fiilin -ing almış ve ad işlevi taşıyan türevi) = Tıpkı Türkçe'deki gibi: "Ulaşması, varması üzerine, ulaşınca/varınca"... to strap = kemer, vb gibi şeylerle bağlayarak raptetmek (buradaki "in", koltuğa iyice yerleştirilmiş olduğu kavramını aktarıyor)...

stewardess = hostes... (denizcilikteki "kadın kamarot" kavramından)... to squawk = genellikle kuşgillerde "bağırmak, çığlık atmak" anlamında kullanılan fiil... you cow = "seni inek seni"... flustered = sinirli, heyecanlı ve kafası karışmış...

When this omission is pointed out to her, the parrot drains its glass and bawls "And get me another coke dogface!" Quite upset, the girl comes back shaking with another coke but still no coffee.

omission = düşürme, devre dışı bırakma; burada, unutulma, yerine getirilmeme... to drain = burada, sonuna kadar boşaltmak... to bawl = yüksek sesle (ve kavgacı edayla) bağırmak, haykırmak... comes back shaking = sinirinden titreyerek döndü... still no coffee = kahve yine yoktu...

Unaccustomed to such slackness the man tries the parrot's approach. "I've asked you twice for a coffee! Go and get it now you old goat!"

slackness = gevşeklik...

The next moment both he and the parrot have been wrenched up and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly stewards. Plunging downwards the parrot turns to him and says, "For someone who can't fly, you've got guts!"

wrenched up = yerlerinden koparılır gibi kaldırılıp... burly = iriyarı, güçlü kuvvetli... plunge = dalışa geçmek; atlamak, dalmak; burada "düşmek"... You've got guts = çok cesursun... You haven't got the guts = O cesaret sende ne arar?!

Into a Dublin pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut and bruised and he's walking with a limp.

Devrik kuruluşa dikkat ediniz... looking like ...etc. = üstünden tren geçmiş gibiydi... in a sling = boynundan askıya alınmış... cut and bruised = yara bere ve morartılar... walking with a limp = topallıyordu...

"What happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender.

"Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy.

"That little shit, O'Conner," says Sean, "He couldn't do that to you, he must have had something ta' hurt ya' with, something in his hand."

Sean = "Şoun" okuyunuz... bartender = barmen... "That little shit, O'Conner" = O'Conner denen o ufak tefek pislik herif (yaptı)... ta' hurt ya' = to hurt you (İrlanda şivesi)...

"That he did," says Paddy, "a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin' he gave me with it."

That he did = Yes, he had something in his hand... shovel = [şa-vıl] kürek, bahçe küreği... a terrible licking = müthiş bir dayak...

"Well," says Sean, "you should have defended yourself, didn't you have something in your hand?"

"That I did," said Paddy. "Mrs. O'Conner's breast, and a thing of beauty it twas, but useless in a fight."

That I did = Yes, I had something in my hand... twas = it was...
