PEOPLE AND EVENTS
TURKISH FANS KNOW HOW TO PARTY

from the  www.waymoresports.com

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The first round of the world championship provided some memories for many.

Turkish fans... etc = Türk taraftarlar eğlenmeyi biliyor... (to know how to do sth = birşeyin nasıl yapılacağını bilmek)... the first round of = ilk turu... provided some memories = belleklerde kaldı, anılar oluşturdu... for many = pekçok kişi için...

Marcelo Machado burying a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Brazil an 88-86 victory over Turkland was certainly on any list.

to bury = maalesef "gömmek" fiili ile ifade etmişler!!...  a three-pointer = üç puanlık atış... to give = veren, verecek şekilde... the buzzer = zil (bitiş düdüğü/çanı)... was certainly... etc = kesinlikle herkesin anılar listesindeydi...

Paul Pierce's eight-point explosion in the closing 46 seconds of the third quarter against Germany to give the United States control of a close game was right there.

eight-point explosion = sekiz puanlık patlaması... closing 46 seconds = son 46 saniye... a close game = takımların sayıları neredeyse birbirine eşit biten maç, zor maç... (Dikkat ederseniz, bir önceki sözcük "to close" = kapatmak, sona erdirmek, fiilinden; ikinci sözcük ise, "close" = yakın, sıfatından)

But nothing was talked about more, nothing drew anywhere near the attention the Turkish fans did.

nothing drew anywhere near = yakınına bile yaklaşamazdı, mukayese kabul etmezdi... Buradaki "did", "drew" sözcüğünü tekrarlamamak için; onun yerine geçiyor. Tümce, gazetecilik dilinde kolay yutuluyor, ama aslında gramer bakımından düşük...

In one game at the RCA Dome and two at Conseco Fieldhouse, the red-and-white clad, flag-waving, non-stop cheering and dancing fans had everyone from players and coaches to media and spectators talking about a group too special for a nickname.

clad = giyinmiş, bürünmüş (eski bir fiilin V3 (past participle) hali...

"I was in Turkland just two weeks ago and I didn't see this many Turks in some of the towns I visited," said Mehmet Kocakülah, a professor at the University of Southern Indiana, who has lived in Evansville for 20 years. "I thought I was back there with the energy these people have shown. If you've never been to Turkland, this is what it's like as far as people go."

İlahi Prof. Kocakülah,  insan turist gibi gelince, turist gözüyle görüyor. Memleketin neresinde coşkulu insan kalmış ki aylardır, yıllardır...

The Turkish government, trying to lure the 2010 world championship and 2012 Olympics, sent about 500 people here for this event and they came equipped with hats — red and white, of course — to give away and plenty of enthusiasm that has quickly caught on.

to lure = cezbetmeğe çalışmak, özellikle de "yem" kullanarak... to be equipped with = donanmış olmak... "to give away", kendisinden tire içindeki açıklama ile ayrılmış "hats" sözcüğüne bağlı: bedava dağıtmak için şapkalar... "plenty of enthusiasm" ise "equipped with" e bağlanıyor. to catch on = "tutmak", salgın halinde bulaşmak = Yani Türklerin bu coçkusu buradaki insanlara da geçti...

Most of the others in the crowd are locals of Turkish heritage and exchange students from schools as far away as New York.

of Turkish heritage = Türk kökenli, anlamında...

"I flew back to the United States just this week and most of the people on the plane were heading here," said Kocakülah's daughter, Cennet, a student at the University of Chicago. "Aphena, [sic.] a very big rock group in Turkland, was even coming here."

[sic] = Bu Latince sözcük, metindeki yanlışın aslından kaynaklandığını , durumun farkında olduğumuzu ve aynen verdiğimizi dile getirir... Kısaltma olmadığı için nokta konulmaz; herzaman köşeli parantez içinde verilir.

"We really appreciate their support and they make it fun to play for them," said Turkland forward Hedo Turkoğlu, who knows something about wild crowds as he plays for the Sacramento Kings in Arco Arena. "We just want to win and make them happy."

After Saturday's victory over Lebanon clinched a second-round berth for Turkland, the team headed downtown with the fans for an outdoor party that went on well into the night.

clinched = (konuşma dili) sağladı, garantiye aldı... berth = gemi kamarasında ranza veya yatacak yer: Biz buna kendi anlatımımızla örneğin "ikinci tura vize" derdik, ... well into the night = gecenin ilerleyen saatlerine kadar...

GLOBALIZATION & THE NATION STATE
WHERE DO WE GO NOW?
AN OVERVIEW -- FINAL PART

DİKKAT: Bu metnin geliştirilmiş yeni baskısı için,

 TIKLAYINIZ

In the globalized world, it is of great importance to take the necessary timely precautions in order to ease an economic crisis before it causes great harm to the world economy. The world talks about the idea of forming a new finance architecture for the 21st century.

timely precautions = zamanında önlemler... to ease = hafifletmek, rahatlatmak, kolaylaştırmak... is of great importance = is very important... ("of + (sıfat) + ad" = "sıfat" yapısı -- of importance = important, of value = valuable, of necessity = necessary...)

The 20th century witnessed periods when the belief in democracy weakened or faded by the apprehensions for food or security.

to witness = tanık olmak... to weaken = zayıf düşürmek veya düşürmek (güçten düşürme, düşme anlamında -- kilo kaybı değil -- yani zaafa uğratmak veya uğramak)... to fade = solmak... apprehension = korku, kaygı... DİKKAT, to apprehend = 1. tutuklamak; 2. anlamak, kavramak; 3. korkmak, endişe etmek...

sıfat + -en = fiil: Başka örnekler: to deepen = derinleşmek veya derinleştirmek... to broaden = to widen = genişlemek veya genişletmek... to thicken = kalınlaşmak veya kalınlaştırmak... vb. vb.

The greatest danger facing the globalizing world is also the same. This world should not be a world of "the most wealthy" and the "most deprived." The fear of unemployment and the profound income inequalities brought about by globalization can only be eliminated by policies and precautions which take the human factor as its focus. In that respect, a new and important role should be played by the nation states. Only those states who perform this duty and take the necessary precautions can take the benefit of the opportunities created by globalization.

deprived = yoksul, yoksul bırakılmış... profound = kökleri derinlere giden, derin, büyük... income inequalities = gelir eşitsizlikleri... to take the human factor as its focus = odak noktası olarak insan faktörünü almak (İngilizce ne kolay di mi, tıpkı Türkçe gibi...) In that respect = o açıdan...

Globalization is not an ideology, but a concrete and dynamic phenomenon gaining new dimensions every day.

concrete = 1. somut; 2. beton... abstract = soyut... gaining new dimensions every day = hergün yeni boyutlar kazanıyor... phenomenon = olgu (pl. phenomena)... Karşılaştırınız: process = süreç...

Being against such a dynamic concrete phenomenon does not stop the process from developing. The process will go on. Besides the new opportunities and better living conditions provided by the globalization, those who lose their jobs because of this process, those who fear the weakening of local traditions and national conscience, those who see the environment under threat and the possibility of social and political turmoil in some countries constitute the painful points about globalization.

being against = karşı olmak... weakening = zayıflama (güçsüz düşme, anlamında; kile verme değil)... conscience = vicdan... Ama, bence burada hata yapılmış: söylenilmek istenen "consciousness" = bilinç, olsa gerek)... turmoil = (tör-moil) çalkantyı, kargaşa... to constitute = bu sözcük Türkçe'ye en iyi "oluşturmak, teşkil etmek" şeklinde çeviri verir...

For overcoming these difficulties, the duty of the states and of the people is to be well aware of the circumstances of the globalizing world, to adapt to these circumstances and to find a good place in this new order. I believe that qualified human resources equipped with a good education can overcome the above-mentioned difficulties.

to overcome = yenmek, üsresinden gelmek... in this new order = bu yeni düzende... equipped with a good education = iyi bir eğitim ile donanmış...

A world is sought which is more beautiful, greener, more peaceful, healthier, more secure and one in which the people get a fairer share of the world's wealth.

is sought = aranıyor, aranmakta (to seek - sought - sought = özlemle aramak, çok istemek  fiilinden)... fairer = daha adil, daha hakça...

Working enthusiastically to achieve such a goal, which is for the benefit of all, is the prerequisite for the humanity for realizing this goal. The world of today is better than that of yesterday. The world of tomorrow should be better that of today. It should be a world in which the whole humanity lives happily. But this necessitates cooperation and collaboration.

enthusiastically = (en-Øusi-æs-tikli) heyecan dolu ve şevkle... to achieve such a goal = böyle bir hedefe ulaşmak (elde etmek, başarmak)... to realize = burada Türkçe'ye giren anlamında = "realize" etmek, gerçekleştirmek... Ama, biliyorsunuz, "I realize that..." = anlamak, kafasına dank etmek... to necessitate = gerektirmek, gerekli kılmak...

than that of today = bugünkünden, bugünkü dünyadan (= than the world of today" -- sözcüğü yinelememek için "that" kullanılır)...

CHUNKS OF WISDOM OR DROPLETS OF BANALITY ?

 ON EDUCATION AND LEARNING

"Many college text-books, which were a weariness and stumbling-block when I studied, I have since read ... with pleasure and profit." -- Henry David THOREAU, 19 February 1854, Journal VI.

Okulda bıkkınlıkla ve sendeleyerek okuduğum pekçok ders kitabı şimdi benim için zevkli ve yararlı birer kaynak... (serbest çeviri)

The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. -- Aristotle

Eğitim (ağacının) kökleri acı, meyvesi tatlıdır... (serbest çeviri)

As the soil, however rich it may be, cannot be productive without cultivation, so the mind without culture can never produce good fruit. -- Seneca (B.C. 3-65 A.D.)

As the soil = tıpkı toprak gibi...

Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. -- Chinese Proverb

treasure = hazine... (Walla, tabii ki bu sözcüğü biliyosunuz, ama buraya "kırmızı" birşeyler yazmak zorundaydım...)

I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't
learn something from him. -- Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

ignorant = (okunuşu: ig-nırınt -- düm-teke) cahil... ignorance = (ig-nırıns -- düm-teke) cahillik, cehalet...

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. -- Albert Einstein

to awaken joy... etc = yaratıcı ifade ve bilgiden kaynaklanacak mutluluğu uyandırmak...

Good teachers are costly, but bad teachers cost more. -- Robert Talbert

İyi öğretmen pahalıdır, ama kötü öğretmen daha da pahalıya malolur...

Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself. -- Chinese Proverb

by yourself = kendin, tek başına... Öğretmen o kapıyı açar, ama sen tekbaşına gireceksin...

Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today. -- Malcolm X

[I have to interpolate a little explanation here -- for fear that I might mislead you as to who Malcolm X was... One of our heroes back in the 1960s, along with Che Guavera and all, he rejected Martin Luther King's nonviolent approach (which called for lots of turning the other cheek) and called for the separation of blacks from mainstream society. However, after a pilgrimage to Mecca, where he saw black and white Muslims together in harmony, he adopted a less confrontational approach. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was shot to death as he delivered a speech. Three men were convicted of murdering the 39-year-old black leader. Though prosecutors suggested at trial that the slaying was plotted as "an object lesson for Malcolm's followers," no direct evidence linked the Nation of Islam -- from which Malcolm had publicly broken -- to the killing, though that speculation still thrives.]

Gelecek, ona bugünden hazırlananlarındır...

Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward. -- Vernon Law

Deneyim, katı ve acımasız bir öğretmendir: Önce sınavını yapar, sonra dersini verir...

Or, As B.F. Skinner Once Put It

"Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten."

Eğitim, öğrenilenler unutulduktan sonra geride kalanlardır...

Jazzman Lionel Hampton Laid to Rest in Harlem

New York - Reuters (September 07, 2002)

Jazz icon Lionel Hampton was laid to rest in New York with his old friend George Bush, the former U.S. president, saying that "to know Lionel is to know joy."

to be laid to rest = ebedi istirahatine yatırtılmak... icon = (okunuşu /ay-kın/) = ikona, put... Burada mecazi... DİKKAT: "with... Bush" şeklinde okursanız "birlikte gömüldüler" olur!! "with... Bush... saying" = "Bush... diyerek"... Burada en iyi çeviri, "Lionel gömülürken, Bush... dedi."

Bu arada, Sayın Bush'n İngilizcesi bir gramatik felaket...  Doğrusu: "To know Lionel was" veya "to have known Lionel" olmalıydı... Sayın Bush (eski başkan), sanırım buradaki tense "yanlışıyla", "o ölmedi, içimizde yaşıyor" ayağına yatıyor...

Hampton, who pioneered and popularized the vibraphone and teamed up with a long list of jazz greats over a musical career that spanned six decades, died last Saturday of heart failure at the age of 94.

to pioneer = (pa-yoniır) öncülük etmek... Müzik setinizin "ÖNCÜ" markalı olduğunu biliyordunuz zaten... to team up = ekip kurmak... Brifing, briefing'den, tim de team'den geliyor!... Yeni TDK, Osmanlıca'yı canlandırmağa çalışadursun...

The coffin of the man they called the "King of the Vibes" was borne in a white, horse-drawn hearse through the streets of Harlem accompanied by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Gully Low Jazz Band in a New Orleans-style funeral procession.

to be born = doğmak, yani "dünyaya getirilmek" (to bear, 1. taşımak; 2. dünyaya çocuk getirmek, fiilinden pasif yapı)... New Orleans-style = New Orleans tarzında, üslubunda... funeral procession = cenaze alayı...

Hundreds of mourning fans followed the procession from the famed Cotton Club on a clear and sunny morning to the gothic-style Riverside Church in Harlem.

mourning = yas tutan... famed = ünlü...

The funeral service hailed Hampton's life as a devoted humanitarian and influential musician in "a celebration of the home-going Lionel Hampton" as Rev. James Forbes, senior minister of the church, told the gathering.

the funeral service hailed... = At the funeral service (kilisedeki cenaze ayininde) Hampton's life was hailed as...  to hail = alkışlamak, selamlamak... ("Hail, Caesar... Hail, Hitler...")... devoted = kendini adamış... home-going = evine (Tanrı katına) gidiyor... told the gathering = kalabalığa, orada toplanmış olanlara dedi...

An emotional former president Bush fought back tears as he remembered Hampton, a long-time friend of the family.

fought back tears = gözyaşlarını güçlükle tutuyordu...

"The story of Lionel Hampton is a true story of how talent and decency overcame ignorance and ill-will," said Bush. "To know Lionel is to know joy."

talent and decency = yetenek ve efendilik... to overcome = yenmek, üstesinden gelmek... ignorance and ill-will = cehalet ve kötü niyet... (Hampton'un bir zenci olarak yaşadıklarına gönderim...)

Letters Of Condolence (Taziyet Mektupları)

President George W. Bush and former President Bill Clinton sent letters of condolences that were read at the service. The Lionel Hampton Orchestra performed with star guests such as trumpeter Clark Terry, pianists Cyrus Chestnut and Hank Jones, and singer Carrie Smith as the crowd clapped along.

Hampton, who lived in Manhattan and continued to play until earlier this year, was a giant of American music, not only for his legendary skills on the vibraphone, but also because his band helped to establish the foundations of rock 'n' roll.

He played with many of the leading lights of jazz from Louis Armstrong to Benny Goodman to Charlie Parker. He was also a great talent scout -- Betty Carter, Cat Anderson, Charles Mingus, Wes Montgomery and Quincy Jones are only a few of the stars that played in his band.

talent scout = yetenekli kimseleri bulup lanse eden...

Born on April 20, 1908, in Louisville, Kentucky, Hampton wrote more than 200 pieces of music, including the jazz standards "Flying Home," "Evil Gal Blues" and "Midnight Sun."

He was one of the first musicians to bridge the racial gap between whites and blacks in jazz.

to bridge = araya köprü kurmak, arayı kapatmak, birleştirmek...

In the 1930s, Hampton joined drummer Gene Krupa and pianist Teddy Wilson in the famous multiracial Benny Goodman quartet. Later, Hampton played a prominent role in Goodman's big band, working on several recording sessions and tours until 1940 when Hampton organized his own permanent orchestra.

multiracial = zenci-beyaz birarada... a prominent role = (pro-minınt) önde gelen rol... big band = büyük caz orkestrası... recording sessions = kayıt oturumları / seansları... permanent = (-mınınt)sürekli, kalıcı...

In the 1940s and 1950s, Hampton enjoyed immense success with a series of recordings and all-star bands. He had a part in the movie "The Benny Goodman Story" in 1955 and later toured in Israel, Europe, North Africa and Australia.

enjoyed = sahipti, mutluluğunu, nimetlerini yaşadı (Hatırlarsanız, to enjoy fiilinin bu anlamı konusunda sizleri sürekli uyarıyorum: TO ENJOY = 1. Hoşça vakit geçirmek (Did you enjoy yourself?)...  2. SAHİP OLMAK; NİMETLERİNDEN YARARLANMAK (He enjoyed great health to the very last hours of his life... He enjoyed great popularity = Çok popülerdi...)

CLEAN JOKES OF THE DAY
KIDNAPPING

A blonde was down on her luck. In order to raise some money, she decided to kidnap a kid and hold him for ransom. She went to the playground, grabbed a kid, took him behind a tree, and told him, "I've kidnapped you."

down on her luck = talihi yaver gitmiyordu... to kidnap = adam kaçırmak ("çocuk kaçırmak" kavramından anlam genişlemesiyle)... ransom = (ræn-sım) fidye...

She then wrote a note saying, "I've kidnapped your kid. Tomorrow morning, put $10,000 in a paper bag and put it under the big tree next to the slide on the north side of the playground. Signed, A Blonde." The blonde pinned the note to the kid's shirt and sent him home to show it to his parents.

pinned = iğneledi, tutuşturdu...

The next morning the blonde checked, and sure enough, a paper bag was sitting beneath the pecan tree. The blonde opened up the bag and found the $10,000 with a note that said, "How could you do this to a fellow blonde?"

sure enough = "gerçekten de" şeklinde çeviriniz... How could you... etc = "Bunu nasıl tıpkı senin gibi blonde olan bana yapabilirsin?" (Teessüf ifadesi)...

MIRROR ON THE WALL

Legend has it that there is a bar in New York where, in the Ladies Room, there is a very special mirror. If one stands in front of the mirror and tells the truth, one is granted a wish. However, if one tells a lie, *POOF* you are instantly swallowed up by the mirror, never to be seen again.

Legend has it that...= Rivayet odur ki... (legend = efsane)... to swallow = yutmak (burada, pasif yapı)...

A redhead of questionable looks walks into the Ladies Room and stands before the mirror and says, "I think I'm the most beautiful woman in the world." *POOF* The mirror swallows her.

of questionable looks = pek de güzel olmayan...

Next, a rather large brunette stands before the mirror and says, "I think I think I'm the sexiest woman alive! *POOF* The mirror swallows her.

rather large = oldukça kilolu... brunette = beyaz tenli, koyu gözlü, koyu saçlı...

Then an absolutely gorgeous blonde comes in and stands before the mirror and says, "I think..." *POOF*

*  *  *  *  *

Well, Gentlemen !! Now that you've had your fill of stupid blonde jokes for this week (stupid blonds, or stupid jokes?!) be prepared for a shock in the next section -- when the blondes strike back !!

NAUGHTY JOKES OF THE DAY
NO MORE SECS !!
I called my 7-year old son to dinner last night, telling him that it was almost ready.
"Just a sec," he answers.

just a sec = bir saniyecik... (second)

Five minutes passed, and "Dinner time," I called to him again...
"Just a sec," is again the answer...
"No more secs!!" I shouted, "I warned you a few minutes ago."
Silence, as he continued working on whatever project
he was working on. I reached over and took it away
from him:

whatever project = herne proje ise... (Tabii burada bir "oyun projesi" kastediliyor...

"No more secs means NO MORE SECS !!!!"

= Saniye maniye dinlemem, saniye maniye dinlemem demektir...

As I spoke the words, I realized I sounded just like
my wife.

I sounded like... etc = Tıpkı karım gibi konuşmuştum... "no more secs": okunuşu aynen "no more sex" gibi...

THE REVENGE

A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up and down the aisles. The salesgirl notices him and asks him if she can help him. He answers that he's looking for a box of tampons for his wife. She directs him down the correct aisle. A few minutes later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls and a ball of string on the counter.

aisles = (okunuşu: aylz) koridor vb... Burada, "rafların arasında"... wander up and down = oraya buraya, aşağı yukarı dolanmak... cotton = pamuk... a ball of string = bir yumak ip/sicim... counter = tezgah...

She says, confused, "Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife?

confused = kafası karışmış...

He answers, "Yesterday I sent my wife to the store to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco and some rolling papers, because it's sooo much cheaper ... so I figure if I have to roll my own, so does she!"

rolling papers = sigara sarmak için kağıt...  so I figure... etc. = Ben de düşündüm ki, madem ben benimkini dürmek zorunda kalıyorum, o da kendisininkini dürsün!!

* Why does it take 1 million sperm to fertilize one egg? -- They won't stop and ask for directions.

* Why did the man cross the road? -- He heard the chicken was a slut.

slut = en hafif tabiri ile "sürtük" ten başlayıp "orta malı" na kadar bir sürü tanımı içerebilir... Bilmecenin aslı: WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?

* What do you call a woman who knows where her husband is every night? -- A widow.

widow = dul (eşinin ölümü ile) widower = erkek "dul"...

* What is the one thing that all men at singles bars have in common? -- They're all married.

singles bar = bekarlar barı (bekar bay ve bayanlar için)... all men at singles bars = bekar barlarındaki bütün erkekler... "all the men who are at/in singles bars" şeklinde düşünün... "Men In Black" (ünlü filim) demekten hiçbir gramatik farklılığı yok... Derlitoplu, doğal ve "idiomatic" bir İngilizce için, bu tür "preposition" yapılarını kendinize maletmelisiniz...

*  *  *  *  *

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

Why are married women usually heavier than single women? -- Single women come home, see what's in the fridge and go to bed; married women come home, see what's in the bed and go to the fridge.
