Article 1 --  Madde 1

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

TECAVÜZE UĞRADIĞI DÜŞÜNCESİYLE KIZININ KAFASINI KESTİ !!

TEHRAN (Reuters -- September 09, 2002) - An Iranian man cut off his seven-year-old daughter's head after suspecting she had been raped by her uncle, the Jomhuri-ye Eslami newspaper said on Sunday.

cut off = kesip koparmak, kesip ayırmak... his seven-years-old daughter's head = yedi yaşındaki kızının kafasını... to suspect = şüphe etmek, kuşku duymak... to rape = tecavüz etmek... uncle = amca (babanın ERKEK kardeşi)...(Ancak İngilizce bu konuda ana-baba ayrımı yapmıyor; yani "annenin ERKEK kardeşi" de olabilir... Jomhuri-ye Eslami = Bu cahil Batılı'lara "İslam Cumhuriyeti" demeği bir türlü öğretemedik...

A post-mortem, however, showed the girl was still a virgin. "The motive behind the killing was to defend my honour, fame, and dignity," the paper quoted the father as saying.

post-mortem = "ölüm sonrası"... still a virgin = Yani, AMCA'ya iftira edilmiş... motive /mou-tiv/ = neden, sebep, motivasyon... honour = onur (burada NAMUS, anlamında)... fame = ün, ad san...  dignity = onur (burada, başı dik, alnı açık, anlamında)... "quoted the father as saying" = (gazetecilik dili) babanın "..........." dediğini bildirdi....

Rape often goes unreported in Iran where the conservative society sees it as bringing shame on the victim and family.

rape = tecavüz... Coşkun the Rapist = Tecavüzcü Coşkun... unreported = bildirilmez, gizli tutulur... conservative society = muhafazakar toplum (hakkımı verin: dilsel üçkağıt yapıp, "tutucu" demedim)... to bring shame on = utanç verici duruma düşürmek... victim = KURBAN...

Local people have called for the man, who has been arrested, to be hanged, but under Iran's Islamic law only the father of the victim has the right to demand the death sentence.

The paper said the father, named as Khazir, has three wives.

Amina Lawal Must Not Face Death

"We hereby uphold the judgment of the (lower) Bakori court that decreed that you be sentenced to death by stoning..."

These were the words the president of the Funtua (Northern Nigeria) Appeals Court told Amina Lawal 30, on Monday Aug 19, 2002. This sentence was passed on Amina in March 2002 for having a child outside marriage.

hereby = işbu kararla... uphold the judgment = kararı onaylıyoruz... lower = alt... decree = hüküm... to sentence = hüküm vermek, mahkum etmek... appeals court = temyiz mahkemesi... to pass a sentence = hüküm vermek, mahkum etmek...

Amina Lawal's Case - Her Trial and Sentence

When unmarried, Amina became pregnant. Local villagers had her arrested and she was brought before a Regional Court where she was charged with the crime of adultery Like Safiya, she had no legal representation and there are serious questions about whether the nature of the charges was adequately explained to her.

charged with = ile suçlandı... adultery = zina... had no legal representation = avukatı yoktu... charges = suçlamalar...

Under the Katsina regional law, admitting to having a baby amounts to a confession to the crime of adultery. As in the case of Safiya Hussaini, the man identified as Amina's partner - the alleged father of her baby daughter - was released. The court said there was insufficient evidence against him.

alleged = iddia olunan... released = salıverildi... insufficient evidence = yetersiz kanıtlar...

For him to be convicted, he must either confess, or 4 other men must testify that they witnessed the adultery.

Victims of Poverty -- Fakirliğin Kurbanları

Like Safiya, Amina comes from an impoverished background. Both were married in their early teens (12 and 14 respectively) only to be divorced at a later stage and left to raise their children by themselves.

impoverished = fakir düşmüş, fakir... respectively = sırasıyla: yani Safiye 12, Emine 14 yaşlarında evlenmişler... only to be divorced = ancak boş olundular... raise their children by themselves = çocuklarını babalarının yardımı olmaksızın yetiştirmek üzere...

The softly spoken and largely unschooled Lawal told AFP that her main worries were the strain the case was putting on her parents and what would happen to her baby daughter Wasila if she is put to death.

Advanced Grammar:

The Present Tense

You do know, Dearest Members, that the present tense form of a main verb receives the suffix "-s" --  if the subject is in the third person singular: she walks, she sings, she says, she writes, she speaks.

However, when you read Shakespeare (and other authors from the period thereabouts) you come across certain other present tense forms as well.

With a second person singular subject (the pronoun is thou), a present tense verb is marked by the suffix -st or -est: thou sayest, thou speakest.

With a third person singular subject, the verb suffix can be -s as in Modern English; or, alternatively, it may take the form of -th or -eth: hence, she seeth, she walketh, she singeth... and the skeptic speaketh... Incidentally, the word "skeptic" has a variant written form as "sceptic", but the former is far more common...

to dive (dove - dove... veya dived - dived) = suya atlamak, balıklama dalmak... Okunuşu: /douv/... Ayrıca, dove = kumru, /dauv/ şeklinde okunur. stroke = kulaç... to deposit  fiilinin bu ilginç kullanımını not ediniz... Bu kullanımı Türkçe'ye "bıraktı" kavramı ile çevirebiliriz...
