 Dearest Members...  It had to happen someday and here we are -- with me sitting here devoid of all  inspiration for a quick brief editorial... So, why not try my hand at some interesting bits and pieces of  information?! There we go now...

 Did Sigmund Freud use narcotics?  Freud not only used cocaine, he recommended it for its "gorgeous excitement" in a paper paid for by drug companies that used it in their products. In later life, he had seen  enough negative evidence to turn up his nose at the white powder, but he continued to smoke 20 cigars a  day until the day he died of oral cancer.  Freud and his sister Anna Freud  married the brother and sister Eli and Martha Bernays. Eli and Anna's  son, Edward Bernays, was thus Freud's nephew twice over. TURKLAND'S TOP SECURITY BOARD MEETS: IRAQ TOPS AGENDA

The Chief of Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces met with senior US military officers on Monday to discuss regional developments.

The board, consisting of the senior members of the government and the chiefs of the General Staff, is also to discuss possible security measures to be taken along Turkland’s borders, mainly in the south east.

 BLUE STREAM CONSTRUCTION FINISHED

Test pumping is expected to commence within the next few weeks.

The much heralded project to bring Russian natural gas under the Black Sea to Turkland took a giant step towards completion when the final wield was made on the 360-kilometre-long pipeline on Sunday.

stream = ırmak, akış... blue stream = "Mavi Akım"... test pumping = "test" sözcüğünün sıfat olarak kullanıldığını görüyoruz: Test için, test niteliğinde... to commence = başlamak... within = "içerisinde"...

Zeki Çakan, Turkland’s Energy Minister symbolically completed the final wield on the pipeline, which will be linked to a land line to carry Russian gas to Ankara and throughout the country.

Blue Stream, as the $3.2-billion-project is known, is a twin pipeline laid along the floor of the Black Sea, in places at depths of more than 2,000 metres, the deepest undersea pipeline in the world.

BITTER TASTE FROM TURKLAND'S GOLDEN ORANGE FILM FESTIVAL

Despite the Turkish films industry making a comeback and attracting increased audiences, the early announcement of results and the spending of less than ten percent of the award budget caused bitterness in the ceremony.

bitter = acı, buruk (mecazi anlatımlarda bu sözcük kullanılır. Uzak, directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan won the best film, best director and best scenario awards. Meral Oğuz won the best actress award for her performance in Martılar Açken and Fırat Tanış took the best actor award with his acting in Sır Çocukları.

The Winter Break was over and the teacher was asking the class about their vacations. She turned to little Johnny and asked what he did over the break.

"That's a very interestingname for a town," the teacher said. "Can you tell the class how you spell 'Punxsutawney'?"

Little Johnny thought about it and said, "You know, come to think of it, we went to Ohio."

come to think of it = Bu yaygın deyişi  "aslına bakılacak olursa" şeklinde çevirin...

 WHOSE ZIP WAS IT ?

In a crowded city at a busy bus stop, a beautiful young woman wearing a tight mini skirt was waiting for a bus.

zip = fermuar...

When at long last a bus stopped and it was her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus.

at long last = sonunda, nihayet... when... it was her turn to get on = binme sırası ona gelince... became aware = farkına vardı... skirt /skö:t/ = etek, eteklik... tight = sıkı (burada) dar... too tight to allow... etc = bacağını otobüsün ilk basamağına kadar kaldırmasına izin vermeyecek ölçüde dardı...

Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little, thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her leg. She tried to take the step, only to discover that she couldn't.

slightly embarrassed = biraz utanmış, mahçup duruma düşmüş olarak... quick smile = Bunun anlamını, sahneyi gözümüzde canlandırarak, metnin gelişinden çıkarmamız gerekiyor; örneğin "utangaç bir gülümsemeyle"... reached her back to unzip her skirt a little = fermuarını biraz açmak için elini arkasına götürdü... slack = gevşeklik, (burada) pay...

So, a little more embarrassed, she once again reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little more, and for the second time attempted the step.

Once again, much to her chagrin, she could not raise her leg. With a little smile to the driver, she again reached behind to unzip a little more and again was unable to take the step.

chagrin /şıg-rin/ = üzüntü, iç sıkıntısı, hayal kırıklığı... much to her chagrin = büyük bir hayal kırıklığı ile (gördü ki, keşfetti ki)...

About this time, a large Texan who was standing behind her picked her up easily by the waist and placed her gently on the step of the bus. She was furious and turned to the man and yelled, "How dare you touch my body! I don't even know who you are!"

The Texan smiled and drawled, "Well, ma'am, normally I would agree with you, but after you unzipped my fly three times, I kinda figured we was friends."

was furious= çok öfkelenmişti... fly = pantolonun ön fermuarı... I kinda (kind of) figured... etc = Herhalde arkadaşız diye düşündüm...
