Being in want of food, he called to a sheep who was passing by, and asked him to fetch some water from a stream flowing close by. "All I want is some water to quench my thirst," he said, "I will be strong enough afterwards to provide myself with some meat." "Yes," said the sheep sarcastically. "I shall bring you something for your thirst, and you will doubtlessly make me provide for your hunger, too." Hypocritical speeches are easily seen through.

Grammar and Vocabulary Study:

lay sick = hasta yatıyordu (lie - lay - lain)... to maim = sakatlamak, sakat bırakmak, elini ayağını kullanamaz hale getirmek... maimed = sakatlanmış, sakat bırakılmış... lair /leer/ okuyunuz (U.S. daha çok /læir/ gibi) = vahşi hayvan ini... in want of = gereksiniminde, ihtiyacı içinde... called to = seslendi... passing by = oradan geçmekte olan, yakınından geçmekte olan...

to fetch = getirmek, gidip getirmek veya alıp getirmek... to flow - flowed - flowed = akmak... close by = yakınlarda... all I want = bütün istediğim, tek istediğim... to quench my thirst = susuzluğumu gidermek için... to provide myself with some meat = kendime biraz et bulmak, sağlamak... sarcasm = ağız eğme, kaba alay... sarcastically = dalga geçer bir tavırla...

doubtlessly /daut-lısli/ = hiç şüphesiz (DİKKAT: "b" sesini okumayınız)... make me provide için aşağıdaki dördüncü gramer notuna bknz....

hypocrisy /hi-p�k-risi= iki yüzlülük, takiye ... hypocritical /hip�-kri-tikl/ = sıfat durumu, "ikiyüzlü, takiyeci"... to see through = numarasını yutmamak, arkasındaki gerçeği görebilmek... (Böylece "see-through" giysilerin de ne anlama geldiğini öğrenmiş oldunuz!...)

DİKKAT: lay sick and maimed = hasta ve sakat durumda yatıyordu. Buradaki yapı: "to lie + sıfat"... "To maim" fiilinin V3 (past participle) durumu da (bütün pp'ler bu niteliği taşır) bir sıfat olarak tümcedeki yerini alıyor.

DİKKAT: "To flow - flowed - flowed" = akmak, fiilini, "to fly - flew - flown" = uçmak, fiili ile karıştırmayınız.

DİKKAT: "close by" ve daha yaygın olan "near by" gibi kalıpları, doğrudan sıfat olarak kullandığınızda tireli yazınız: "There is a hospital near by the road." Ama, "Near-by hospitals were alerted."

DİKKAT: "make smb do sth" -- "causative" = ettirgen yapı: Birisine birşeyi yaptırtmak, yapmasını sağlamak veya zorlamak...

Answer These Questions:

1. Why was the wolf lying sick and maimed in his lair?

2. What did he want of the sheep that was passing by?

3. Do you agree with the final statement made in the story? Support your point of view, whether it is positive or negative, with at least one example.

 The Old Woman and the Wine-Jar

An old woman found an empty jar which had lately been full of prime old wine and which still retained the fragrant smell of its former contents. She wistfully placed it several times to her nose, and drawing it backwards and forwards said, "O most delicious! How nice must the wine itself have been, when it leaves behind in the very vessel which contained it so sweet a perfume!" The memory of a good thing lives on and on.

Grammar and Vocabulary Study:

wine-jar = Açıklama için aşağıdaki notlara bknz.... lately = yakın zamanlara değin, yakın geçmişte... prime = seçkin, kaliteli... açıklama için aşağıdaki notlara bknz... to retain = vermemek, saklamak, elinde tutmak... fragrant = güzel kokulu... former = önceki... wistfully = özlemle, istekle...

placed it to her nose = burnuna tuttu... delicious /di-li-şıs/ = leziz... leave behind = geride bırakmak... vessel = kab... perfume okunuşu: /pö-fyum/...= parfüm... lives on and on = yaşar da yaşar...

DİKKAT: "jar" karşılığı Türkçe sözlüklerde tek sözcük önerilir: kavanoz. "Wine-jar" kalıbı, tamamen sözlüğe dayalı çalışmanın ne derece yanıltıcı olabileceğine güzel bir örnek. Aslında "jar", "cam, porselen veya topraktan yapılmış derin ve silindirik, geniş ağızlı kap" kavramı karşılığıdır. Eski Yunan şarap kapları da kimi zaman testi, kimi zaman ise oldukça geniş ağızlı vazomsu görünüşte idi.

DİKKAT: "prime" sözcüğünün çeşitli anlamları var: 1. baş, başat: "prime minister"... 2. olgunluk dönemi, en iyi dönemi... Eski şarabın da en iyi şarap olduğu konusunda yaygın bir kanı vardır. Oysa her şarap eskitilmek için yapılmamıştır ve belli bir süreden sonra bozulmağa başlar. İşte size biraz geçkince bir hanım için kullanılan, "She's very nice, but a little past her prime" ifadesinin açıklaması...

DİKKAT: "very vessel" = "kabın ta kendisi"... "He's the very man I've been looking for." = Aradığım adamın ta kendisi... "Very" sözcüğünün bu özel pekiştirici kullanımını not ediniz. Genelde "ta kendisi" anlamını verecektir.

DİKKAT: "when it leaves behind in the very vessel which contained it so sweet a perfume"... Bu tümceyi anlamakta güçlük çekiyorsanız, bir de şu şekilde değerlendirin: when it leaves behind so sweet a perfume in the very vessel which contained it... Çünkü, tümcenin anlaşılmasındaki güçlük, "leave" fiili ile, bu fiilin nesnesi olan "so sweet a perfume" grubu arasına başka sözlerin yerleştirilmiş olmasından kaynaklanıyordu.

DİKKAT: "How nice must the wine itself have been..." = Kimbilir şarabın kendisi ne kadar hoş ve güzelmiştir... "must have + V3" yapısı, geçmişe dönük mantıksal çıkarsamalar için kullanılır: "The streets are wet this morning; it must have rained last night." = Sokaklar bu sabah ıslak; dün gece yağmur yağmış olsa gerek... Demek ki dün gece yağmur yağmış...

1. What would have made this old woman happier when she found that empty wine-jar?

2. Explain in Turkish what is meant by her "drawing it backwards and forwards".

3. Paraphrase the final sentence.

The proprietor of a successful optical shop was instructing his son on how to charge a customer.

proprietor /prop-ra-yıtır/ = sahibi... to instruct = talimat vermek, öğretmek... how to charge the customer = müşteriye nasıl fiat verileceği...

"After you have fitted the customer's glasses," he said, "and he asks you what the charge will be, you say, '$10.' Then see if he winces."

to fit = takmak, yerine oturtmak, uydurmak... glasses = gözlük... "İki (çift) gözlük" demek için "two pairs of glasses" demek zorundasınız. Gözlüğünüzü arıyor, bulamıyorsanız, soracağınız soru: "Have you seen my glasses?" (Yani tekildir)...

to wince = ürkmek şeklinde tepki vermek... frames = çerçeve... lenses = camlar (gözlükte)... Ayrıca, tabii, "lenz" anlamı da var...
