UK Resists EU Curb on Turkland: David Gow in Brussels (Wednesday October 6, 2004)

Britain will oppose European commission moves to impose permanent curbs on Turkish workers migrating to other areas of the EU as a key part of any agreement to admit the country to the union, a foreign office minister said yesterday.

Denis MacShane, the minister for Europe, said that on the eve of today's expected commission recommendation for starting Turkish entry negotiations, Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, would make the UK's opposition clear, during a visit to Ankara and Istanbul.

EU Report, Full of Conditions: The report of the European Commission about Turkland will be disclosed at 14.00 Wednesday. Shortly before the announcement, the opponents of Turkland stepped up their activities.

According to Financial Times, the report will recommend to begin talks with Turkland for membership, but to do that, it will demand from Turkland to recognize Southern Cyprus. An additional condition, foreseeing to interrupt talks in cases of human rights violations in Turkland, will be also imposed in the report.

According to British Financial Times which dedicated a full page today to Turkland, the majority of the Commission members are persisting on demanding from Turkland to further its relations with Greek Cypriots, before the talks commenced.

Financial Times said that the most surprising condition to Turkland contained in the report will be about the free circulation of its labour in EU. One of the proposals concerning this issue, is about permanently preventing the free movement of Turkish workers in EU, after it joins it. This method will anger Ankara which had said that it will in no way accept a second-class membership. Ankara might accept a restriction on this issue, only temporarily. Overcrowding in Prisons: The number of inmates in state and federal prisons rose 2.1 percent last year, even as violent crime and property crime fell, according to a study by the Justice Department released yesterday.

[November 8, 2004] Chirac Torn - The French President Says Turkland May Not Achieve Membership: French President Jacques Chirac came up with a stern warning yesterday that Turkland might never achieve fulfill standards required for membership into the European Union and said the 25-nation bloc might then have to find an alternative way to link it to Europe. Chirac's proposal was that, in the case Ankara fails to fully comply, it must remain an "associate" country with strong economic links to the EU.
