DOMESTIC AFFAIRS
OBVIOUSLY THE MILITARY TOO
ARE CONFUSED

Do MGK Secretary-General's words on the EU reveal a certain new attitude on the part of the TSK, though he was only disclosing his "personal" views? What is not easy to understand is his suggestion that Turkland conduct a policy "that encompasses Russia and Iran without ignoring the United States." This has caused a certain amount of confusion in minds, and a clarification is called for.

attitude = tutum, tavır... to disclose = açıklamak... to encompass = kapsamak, içine almak... to ignore = görmezden gelmek, tınmamak... clarification = açıklığa kavuşturma (make clear)...

The views expressed by National Security Council (MGK) Secretary-General Gen. Tuncer Kılınç at a symposium held at the War Academies Command two days ago have created confusion in many a minds.

Though Kılınç Pasha emphasized that these were his own personal views, those familiar with the traditions of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) know very well about the General Staff's sensitivity about military figures' "disclosing personal views." Especially when the person that has spoken up is the MGK secretary-general, it becomes all the more difficult to ignore these words by saying: "So what? These are only his personal views."

to emphasize = vurgulamak...  general staff = genel kurmay... sensitivity = duyarlık, "hassasiyet"... figures = (burada) şahıslar, kişiler... figures' = sözcüğün -in eki almış hali... to speak up = açıkça ve yüksek sesle söylemek...

Under the circumstances, although the prime minister said, "This is his personal stance; we do not have any such policy," in a way that indicates that he is taking this view lightly, Gen. Kılınç's words have caused an increasing number of people to ask questions such as, "Is the TSK altering its stance? Is it further toughening up its approach?"

stance = tutum, tavır... to alter = değişmek, değiştirmek; değişim geçirmek... to toughen up = sertleştirmek... ["tough" sıfatından -en ekiyle yapılan fiil]... further toughening up = daha da sertleştiriyor...

As far as we know, the General Staff is not against the European Union membership. What it wants is that while moving towards the EU, the measures required to ensure the state's and the country's unity and integrity, be taken.

as far as we know = bildiğimiz kadarıyla... to ensure = sağlamak, sağlama almak, garantiye almak... unity = birlik, beraberlik... integrity = bütünlük...

It wants Turkland not to run and join the EU blindly without securing itself adequately. It wants Turkland not to take too hasty steps.

hasty = aceleci, acele... blindly = körlemesine...

Some of these sensitivities are extremely justified. However, the view expressed by Gen. Kılınç carries this issue even beyond the EU and encompasses a brand new initiative, the feasibility of which is debatable.

justified = haklı... (to justify = haklılığını göstermek, haklı kılmak, fiilinden)... issue = (burada) konu, mesele... brand new = yepyeni... initiative = insiyatif, girişim... feasibility = fizibilite, olabilirlik, geçerlik... debatable = tartışmalı, tartışmaya açık... (to debate, "müzakere etmek" fiilinden)

ECEVİT: WE EXPECT EU SUPPORT AGAINST TERRORISM

(from the ntvmsnbc.com; modified slightly)

Turkish Prime Minister, in his speech at the EU summit in Barcelona, stressed Turkland could help reconciliation between cultures and religions as a modern, democratic and secular state.

summit /SA-mit/ = zirve, doruk... reconciliation = barışma, uzlaşma... secular /SEK-yulı/ = laik...

Turkland’s Prime Minister Ecevit called on European Union member countries to give effective support to the county's years-long fight against terrorism. He explained that the country has taken determined steps towards membership in the EU bloc despite the threats it receives in its region. Describing Turkland as a bridge between East and West, Ecevit called European countries to consider the Eurasia vision, saying “EU policies should not be limited to Europe."

years-long = yıllardır süren... determined = kararlı... threats = tehditler... the Eurasia vision = Avrasya vizyonu...

Ecevit also called on EU member states to help end poverty and social inequalities in other countries such as Turkland. Otherwise there could be the risk that related problems and disturbances in those countries could be exported beyond their borders, Ecevit warned.

call on smb = çağrıda bulunmak (başka yerde, "uğramak, ziyaret etmek" anlamı da taşıyabilir)... poverty = fakirlik (poor, sözcüğünden)... [DİKKAT: Sınavlarda çoğu zaman "power" sözcüğü ile karıştırılıyor]... inequality = eşitsizlik... to be exported beyond the borders = sınırların ötesine ihraç edilmek...

TURKISH MINISTER HITS OUT AT "FASCIST" ITALIANS

by Massimo Marzocchi, from The Scotsman, Fri 15 March 2002...

THE brawl at the end of Roma’s Champions League match against Galatasaray turned into a diplomatic incident yesterday when the Turkish foreign minister accused Italian police of behaving like fascists.

brawl = dalaşma, kavga, gürültü patırtı... incident = olay...

Fighting involving players, officials and riot police broke out after the 1-1 draw between the Italian champions and the İstanbul club in Rome.

"Watching from television and looking at the newspapers, I thought I was watching the time of fascist Mussolini and the Mussolini police, not Europe in 2002," Cem said.

"A police that attacks and truncheons so pitilessly, that goes into the changing rooms and attacks our players could only be Mussolini’s police," he added.

truncheon /TRAN-çın/ = cop (burada fiil = coplamak)... pitilessly = acımasızca... changing rooms = soyunma odaları...

Thirteen Italian police were injured in the brawl, officials said. Police said they would give magistrates a detailed report of the incidents, including video footage and photographs.

magistrates = sorgu hakimleri... footage = çekimler...

ELEVEN CHARGED IN TURKISH MATCH-FIXING SCANDAL

from The Star Online, Malaysia...

İSTANBUL: Turkish prosecutors on Friday filed bribery charges against two super league football coaches, a referee and eight others in a match-fixing scandal that could shake the country’s premier division.

bribery /BRAY-bıri/ = rüşvet... charge = suçlama, isnat ("yükleme" kavramından]... referee /RE-fı-Rİ:/ = hakem... match-fixing = şike...

İstanbul prosecutors have completed a charge sheet against the 11 accused, who also include a businessman wanted in Turkland for involvement in a scandal exposing links between state officials and organized crime, the state-run Anatolian news agency said. The agency said the charges included “setting up a criminal gang” and “taking and receiving bribes”.

prosecutor = savcı... involvement = karışmış olmak... a scandal exposing links = bağlantıları açığa vuran bir skandal... setting up a criminal gang = "çete kurmak"...

Prosecutors had begun interviewing referees and other people when allegations surfaced last month that some matches in Turkland were fixed. The matches concerned include games from the top division down to lower leagues over a number of years.

allegations = iddialar... to surface = yüze (yüzeye) çıkmak... over a number of years = yıllardır, yıllar boyunca...

Turkland’s football federation is watching the case closely, aware that allegations of match-fixing could cast doubts over the league title winners and lead relegated clubs to appeal.

watching the case closely = davayı yakından izliyor... cast doubts over = üzerine şüphe düşürmek, şaibeli hale getirmek... title winner = şampiyon... relegated clubs = küme düşen takımlar... could... lead relegated clubs to appeal = küme düşmüş takımların karar düzeltilmesi için başvurmalarına yol açabilir...

Earlier this month, federation head Haluk Ulusoy said he had full confidence in his referees and would not allow a few bad apples to stain the reputation of Turkish football. – Reuters

TÜRKOĞLU THE KING OF SACRAMENTO

Whether scoring, rebounding or firing off assists to his team mates, Türkoğlu dominated the game against Denver.

Hidayat Türkoğlu on Thursday night showed why he is one of the most exciting players to come out of Turkland, when he personally demolished the Denver Nuggets in a Pacific Division match of the US National Basketball Association.

to demolish = yıkmak, yerle bir etmek...

Though not a regular starter for his Sacramento Kings, Türkoğlu was called on to line up at the tip off after Kings star With Peja Stojakovic was ruled out with an injured hamstring. Seizing the opportunity for extra court time, Türkoğlu put in a match-winning performance, reaching a career-high 31 points, pulling down nine rebounds and dishing off 10 assists in the Kings 118 to 82 victory over Denver.

[Demek ki ribaundlar "pull down" ediliyor; asistler "dish out" ediliyor... Olaya böyle bakmalısınız.]

Türkoğlu, in his second year with the Kings, was modest about his stellar performance: "Peja is a good scorer, probably one of the leading scorers on the team, and today I tried to do the same things as him, to rebound and score,” said Türkoğlu after the match. “I had to step it up and play as a starter.”

modest = mütevazi, tevazu gösterdi... stellar performance = yıldız performans...

The win lifts the Kings to 49-19, the best win-loss ratio in the NBA, with their 32-3 home record also being a league best. It is the fourth time this season that Sacramento has defeated the Nuggets, with an average winning margin of a massive 22 points.

FOREIGN PRESS
ITALIAN NAVY "LET IMMIGRANTS DROWN"

The Italian navy was accused last night of doing little to help shipwreck victims as more than 50 immigrants were feared drowned when their boat capsized in heavy seas off the southern coast of Sicily.

doing little = pek az şey yapmak, pek birşey yapmamak... shipwreck = gemi kazası, gemi enkazı... were feared drowned = boğulduklarından korkuluyordu... to capsize /KÆP-sayz/ = alabora olmak... heavy seas = çok kaba dalgalı deniz... off the southern coast = güney sahili açıklarında...

The tragedy occurred at around 8pm on Thursday as the boat, laden with illegal immigrants believed to be mainly west Africans, Palestinians and Turkish Kurds, was being towed by an Italian fishing vessel towards the island of Lampedusa.

laden = yüklü ("to load" fiilinden sıfat; eski pp; yenisi, biliyorsunuz, "loaded")... to tow = yedeğinde çekmek (burada pasif)... fishing vessel = balıkçı teknesi...

Nine men were rescued by the fishing boat while an Italian naval patrol boat on the scene picked up just two. "The navy's rescue efforts? They might have done more," said one of the sailors on the fishing vessel.

patrol = devriye... picked up just two = sadece iki kişi kurtardı (denizden topladı!)...

The captain of the Elide, Vito Diodato, said he had begun towing the overloaded boat after he found it having a hard time in large waves with engine trouble. It overturned after being hit by a particularly large wave. "We couldn't reduce our speed because the engine cuts out at low speed," he said.

overloaded = aşırı yüklü... engine trouble = motor arızası... to overturn = başaşağı dönmek (burada, alabora olmak)... engine cuts out at low speed = düşük hızda motor stop ediyor...

"Only after the boat had sunk and disappeared under the waves and the bodies were disappearing underwater did the navy launch a lifeboat, but they only managed to save two," the captain said. "They might have thought about it a bit sooner."

to launch = denize indirmek (burada, yola çıkarmak, anlamında)... [Devrik tümceye dikkat]

One of the sailor said, "It was a terrible scene: desperate voices calling for help, dozens of arms reaching towards us out of the darkness...

desperate voices = çaresiz sesler/bağırışmalar... reaching toward us = bize uzanıyordu...

"The most shocking image was that of a woman trying to hold on to a piece of wood as a fight broke out around her and someone punched her in the face... She was shouting with fear and exhaustion, and she didn't make it... She slipped slowly into the black waters before we could hoist her on board."

to punch = yumruklamak... she didn't make it = başaramadı, kendini kurtaramadı... to hoist her on board = sudan çekip kaldırarak güverteye almak...

NYON, Switzerland -- England's final qualifying match for the Euro 2004 tournament will be a tense away game against Turkland, a UEFA draw decided Thursday.

qualifying = tur atlama... tense = gerilimli, gergin... away game = deplasman maçı... draw = kur'a...

The teams -- the strongest in Group 7 -- will meet on Oct. 11 or 12, 2003, to decide the final standings in the qualifying stages. England is due to host Turkland six months earlier.

The (two) teams -- (which are) the strongest in Group 7 = 7. Grubun en kuvvetlileri olan bu iki takım... standings = sıralama... is due + mastar = -cek, -cak (gelecek zaman belirtir)... to host = evsahipliği yapmak, ağırlamak... six months earlier = bu maçın altı ay öncesinde...

"GENOCIDE" MISTAKE !!

TDN Editorial by İlnur Çevik, 6 April 2002

Ecevit clearly got carried away and made remarks which he had to clarify at the DSP party gathering...

to get carried away = coşmak, coşku ile kendinden geçmek... to clarify = açıklığa kavuşturmak... gathering = toplantı...

We were surprised on Thursday when we heard Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit telling his Democratic Left Party (DSP) deputies in a weekly routine gathering that Israel was committing an act of genocide against the Palestinians.

to commit genocide /CEN-ısayd/ = soykırım yapmak...

Such a statement coming from the prime minister of a country which is so sensitive to the word "genocide," we felt the prime minister would be more careful in what he said. After all, we are always up in arms when people accuse the Ottomans of having committed acts of genocide against the Armenians earlier this century. We even go as far as to threaten to cut our relations with countries whose parliaments approve anti-Turkish genocide resolutions. So when we heard his remarks we felt, "this man really means business."

after all = "ne de olsa" şeklinde çeviriniz... to be up in arms = ayaklanmak (asıl anlamı silahlı ayaklanma)... to mean business = işi ciddi tutmak; konuya eğilmek...

Then, we asked, "If Ecevit was full of such views, why did he approve the modernization of Turkish tanks by Israel last week?" So we were really baffled.

baffled = şaşırıp kalmış (to baffle, fiilinden)...

It seems the prime minister got carried away at the gathering, and his fiery speech went a bit too far. This became apparent when the Turkish Foreign Ministry drew Ecevit's attention to the possible ramifications of his remarks. So the prime minister issued a written statement late Thursday which aimed at down-playing his charge of Israeli genocide.

fiery speech /FA-yıri/ = ateşli konuşma... went a bit too far = biraz fazla ileri gitti... apparent /ı--rınt/ = (burada) gözle görülür, belirgin...

In the statement, Ecevit said his remarks accusing military ally Israel of committing "genocide" against Palestinians reflected the region's growing anxiety over violence in the Middle East.

military ally /Æ-lai/ = askeri müttefik... anxiety /eng-ZA-iti/ = endişe, tedirginlik...

"In this speech, I touched upon the grave results the events in the Middle East could lead to. My words reflected the anxiety felt in our country and our region."

to touch upon = değinmek... grave = ağır ciddi... (ayrıca, mezar)...

This is all fine, but not so convincing. After such remarks, he should not criticize the actions of some Islamists in Turkland who make similar remarks like him... Ecevit has to be much more careful in what he says and does.

This is all... etc. = Bütün bunlar iyi de, pek inandırıcı değil...

We heard very clearly at his address to the DSP deputies that he called Israeli Prime Minister Ariel "Sharon," "Sheraton," several times, which raised many eyebrows. This can be considered a slip of the tongue, but a prime minister cannot afford making the serious mistake of using the word "genocide" so freely...

raised many eyebrows = kaşların kalkmasına neden oldu (garip karşılama ve sorgulama, ifade ediyor)... slip of the tongue = dil sürçmesi...

If the Foreign Ministry had not warned Ecevit of his "mistake," would the prime minister have made such a written statement late Thursday night?

Ecevit's address, in general, was well balanced and to the point. He was right in charging that some Arab countries do not want a Palestinian state, that Sharon's tactics were playing into the hands of radical terrorist elements, and above all that Sharon was trying to get rid of Arafat. What is sad, is that the mention of "genocide" overshadowed all these...

to the point = konuya ilişkin, meselenin üstüne giden... to charge = suçlamak... play into the hands of = karşı tarafın işine yarayacak şekilde davranmak... to overshadow = gölgesi düşmek...

GALATASARAY BREAKS CLEAR

from, http://www.ntvmsnbc.com

It may have been Galatasaray’s first domestic win on the road since September but Cim Bom couldn’t have timed it better, its 2-0 defeat of Trabzonspor on Wednesday night taking it to the outright lead of the Turkish Super League.

to break clear = arayı açmak... couldn't have timed it better = daha iyi zamanlayamazlardı; en iyi zamanlama buydu...

Trabzonspor went into the match, postponed from three weeks ago to allow Galatasaray to prepare for its final Champions League game against Barcelona, with high hopes of further complicating the congested situation at the top of the table.

to postpone = ertelemek... (to cancel = iptal etmek)... further complicate = daha da karmaşık hale getirmek... congested = tıkanık, tıkışık, kalabalık... at the top of the table = sıralamanın tepesinde...

However, a hard running Galatasaray outfit brought these hopes to earth with a bump, through goals to Arif in the 14th minute and Hasan Şaş in the 89th. Indeed Şaş was all over the park, his pass setting up Arif for the first goal and his incisive running playing havoc with the Trabzon defence all night.

a hard running GS outfit = çok koşan bir GS takımı... indeed = gerçekten de... set up = hazırlamak, kurmak... incisive running = derinlemesine delici koşu (incisive = sivri, keskin, içine işleyen, delip geçici, vb... "to incise" fiilinden; incision = yarma, deşme; tıpta "insizyon" = kesi)... play havoc with = altüst/darmadağın etmek... defence = defans, savunma...

Trabzon did have the better of part of the second half, applying continued pressure on the Galatasaray defence, with keeper Mondragon forced to make a number of strong saves.

keeper = goal-keeper = goalie = kaleci... strong saves = zor kurtarışlar, iyi kurtarışlar (deriz biz)...

However, the home side could not translate pressure into an equalizer and then had to sit back as Şaş weaved a bit of magic just before full time, beating three defenders and slotting home a shot past Trabzon keeper Metin.

home side = evsahibi takım... (tersi: visiting side)... translate pressure into an equalizer = baskıyı bir beraberlik golüne çevirmek... weave a bit of magic = büyü gibi dokudu... just before full time = maç bitmeden az önce... to slot home = ağlara taktı, kaleye soktu...

Galatasaray’s win lifts it three points clear of second placed Fenerbahçe and five in front of losing Turkish Cup finalist Beşiktaş. If Cim Bom can continue to display the form of Wednesday night, they would have to be considered favourites to take the title. It is just a question of if.

three points clear of second placed FB = ikinci sıradaki FB'nin üç puan önünde... to take the title = şampiyon olmak... It is just a question of if... Bir önceki cümledeki "eğer" sözcüğüne gönderim yapılıyor...

HIDDINK WARNS GÜNEŞ

South Korea coach Guus Hiddink sent out a warning to his Turkish counterpart Şenol Güneş that he cannot afford to be complacent about his team's prospects at the World Cup, where Turkland is drawn in an opening round group against Brazil, Costa Rica and China.

counterpart = karşı tarafta eşdeğer mevkideki adam, mümasil... complacent = halinden fazlasıyla memnun olarak gevşemiş, aldırmıyor... prospects = umutlar, beklentiler... is drawn = kur'a ile düştü...

"I think Turkland will be the second team to come through the group after Brazil," Hiddink said. "However, at major events like this, small nations can cause big surprises. In particular, I advise Şenol Güneş to watch out for Costa Rica because in its qualifying matches it played excellent soccer against very strong opponents."

watch out = dikkatli, olmak, temkinli olmak... opponent /o-POU-nınt/ = rakip...

South Korea drew a recent friendly against Turkland 0-0 in Germany.

friendly = hazırlık maçı, dostluk karşılaşması...
