[sequencing
= ardarda diziliş]
abracadabra /ÆB-rıkı-DÆB-rı/
=
(anlamsız) sihirbazlık sözü
Mr. Topbaş has a
magic wand; he has waved it in a circle motion and said
”ABRACADABRA” -- and changed the IETT plot in Levent into a

Adam's apple /Æ-dımz-Æ-pıl/
=
gırtlak çıkıntısı, "Adem'in elması"
Adam's apple is
the familiar anatomic feature in the front of the neck which is
due to the forward protrusion of the thyroid cartilage. It is
the largest and most prominent cartilage of the larynx. It takes
its name from the biblical story about Adam and Eve, with the
Serpent and the Apple. A piece of the forbidden fruit stuck in
Adam's throat and created the anatomic "Adam's apple".
[protrusion
= çıkıntı... serpent
= yılan...]
The thyroid cartilage tends to enlarge at adolescence,
particularly in males. Enlargement of the Adam's apple is
considered, like pubic hair growth, one of the secondary sexual
characteristics.
aglet /ÆG-lit/
=
ayakkabı bağcığının ucundaki küçük plastik koruma parçası.
Some people never
seem to tire of trying to repair aglets. Why not simply replace
the shoelaces? An occasion may arise, however, when you will
have to place the aglets yourself, should you need to cut down
your pair of inordinately long shoelaces down to a comfortable
length.
ahem /ı-HEM/
=
Hımmm... Öhööö-Öhööö... Yok yav?! iyi sallıyosun... [Dikkat çekmek için,
uyarmak için, ciddiye almadığını ifade etmek için, vb. kullanılan
bir ünlem]

=
1.
kolların bir duruş posizyonu; eller bele yakın, kalçanın hemen
üzerinde iki yanda, avuç içleri dışa gelecek şekilde; dirsekler öne
eğimli; "seni gidi seni" meydan okuması...
When my mother got
mad, she used to look at me sternly with her arms akimbo.
=
2.
bacaklar iki yana ayrık, otoriter veya meydan okuyan duruş
pozisyonu.
On both sides of
the massive gate, two stern-looking, unsmiling security guards
stood akimbo -- as if their testicles needed ample airing
following a hard chase.
amorphous /ı-MO:-fıs/ = amorf, şekilsiz, şekli bozuk
She's got this
amorphous, vaguely teddy-shaped stuffed animal which she keeps
tying pretty pink ribbons to all day long.
amphibious /æm-Fİ-biıs/
=

The Dutch are
reported to be gearing up for climate change with amphibious
houses.

[Antropoloji'de ilk kez Malay kültüründe sık görülen "ağır ruhsal
bunalım ve şiddetli öldürme isteği" şeklinde tanımlanmıştı]

The football league of 2007 was cut short after fans ran amuck
on the streets, burning parked cars and laying waste to streets

[Ağzımdan yel

niteliğinde, yamyamlığa ilişkin
Cannibalism, or
anthropophagy, is the ingestion of human flesh by humans.
Cannibalism, or more precisely, anthropophagy, was fairly
widespread in many parts of the primitive world up until about a
hundred years ago.
She broke into a twisted smile as she imagined that any
self-respecting anthropophagous gentleman would possess not
simply a partiality for human flesh, but also a well-developed
fastidious taste for certain delicate parts of it.
