Aşağıdaki deyimlerin tümünü insanlar için kullanılan deyimler olarak
derledim. Bazıları hayvanlar veya makineler vb gibi başka şeyler için
de kullanılabilir. (Yani hayaller, fikirler filan; lütfen hemen "başka
şeyler" düşünmeyiniz).
"Ölmek" kavramı
karşılığı bir sürü "euphemism" /YU:-fimizm/ (yumuşatarak, incitmeden, adını anmadan
söylemek) vardır:
Passed away,
passed on, passed over, deceased, departed, is resting in peace, is in
a better place, is no longer with us...
Tıpta, "became ex" deriz; Türkçesi de çok kolay: "Eks oldu"...
"the late Mr. Brown" gibi bir deyime dikkatinizi
çekeyim: "Müteveffa Bay Brown" demektir. (Tabiatıyla, Bay Brown
hidayete ermiş, Müslüman olmuş, küçük bir ameliyat geçirmişse, "Merhum
Bay Brown" şeklinde anmak gerekecektir.)

tolerable, yani duruma göre (biraz şüphe uyandırsa da) uygun
sayılabilecek ifadeler:
"is" ile:
demised, no more, expired, gone, bereft of life, six feet under,
sleeping with the fishes, wandering the Elysian Fields (eski dostumuz
Odisüs gibi), in Heaven...
"has" ile:
ceased to be, crossed the River Styx (Odisüs), paid Charon's fare
(Odisüs)... returned to the ground
Definitely
slang, kesinlikle argo ifadeler:
"is" ile:
belly up,
defunct, done for, erased, extinct, inanimate, offed, rubbed out,
snuffed out, popped off, finished, kicked off, in Hell...
