There are three major challenges to Turkland’s membership:

These are economic, and political factors.
1.
Economic factors:
German economy is suffering greatly from unemployment and stagnation.
It is the largest economy in Europe. French and Italian economies
are not doing so greatly either. Let us not forget that the
Portuguese, Spanish and Greek economies accelerated mostly by German
taxpayers’ money. When the greatest European economies are in
trouble, the prospect of absorption of a large economy like Turkland becomes more
challenging. It becomes problematic economically, and politically.

2. Political factors:
The German Marshall Fund’s recent poll shows that the majority of EU
public is against Turkland’s membership. Tied to the economic downturn I
mentioned above, Europeans are scared to lose their jobs and think
that Turks will immigrate in large quantities and worsen their
economies. The national parties that play into this have favorable
conditions currently, as they can scare the general public with
scenarios of nightmare with the Turkish membership.

The poll also shows that at least 30% of Europeans are in favor of
Turkland’s membership and there’s a good 10-20% that is undecided.
This is a good base for Turkland to launch a public relations campaign. Over
the course of the negotiations, the Europeans have to be convinced
that the Turkish membership is in Europe’s long term interest.

This need to be done both by national government, but more so by the
Turkish government’s mass campaigning activities. Turkland is
undergoing a major transformation for the sake of obtaining the EU
membership, and this should be appreciated by the Europeans.
Turkland should inform
the public of Europe, as well as the government and the EU commission
on its progress. This ties into the challenges that face Turkland,
which I will mention later on. But it should be remembered that a
Turkland
that convinces the EU governments cannot attain the goal of full
membership. It should gain the hearts of Europeans.

3. Turkland’s
dynamics:
We all acknowledge that Turkland is a highly important country, and is
full of economic and social potential for the future of Europe. I
personally fully support the Turkish membership, and would make the
following friendly suggestions for the things that the Turks should
address before they can gain membership:

The issue of the rights of Kurds is
being improved. The EU is supporting grassroots development projects
in the southeastern Turkland, where the Kurds live in large quantities.
Their full participation in the political process and their growth
will be closely watched by the EU.

The religious minorities, on the other hand, face basic human rights
violations. The Christians, for instance, cannot open their clerical
school in Istanbul that was shut decades ago. The Christians in
Turkland need priests and clerical
personnel to maintain their religion, and without the school that
provides them with these, their basic rights are violated. These and
other questions regarding the rights of minorities will need to be
improved, and brought to the same level as all other EU member
countries.

Improve relations with neighbors. Turkland has greatly improved its
relations with Greece in the past 5 years, and can now see how
beneficial it is for them. Greece is one of the greatest advocates of
Turkish membership now.

The same should be the case for Armenia. The
Turks should come to terms with the fact that there is a claim for

The court case of writer Orhan Pamuk, for instance, is a shame
to basic human right of freedom of speech. This Turkish writer argued
that Ottomans killed Armenians, and the district attorney brought a
public case against him. This is unthinkable, and is a great shame for
an official candidate to the EU.

Turkland has to embrace basic human
right of freedom of speech, and should allow its citizens to express
their views. On the other hand, the Turkish diplomacy should be
sophisticated in addressing the Armenian claims of genocide.

Arguing
that the genocide did not take place does not resonate with the
Europeans. The best thing that the Turks can do is to open its borders
with Armenia and engage that country diplomatically as well as
economically.

Same should be for Cyprus. The fact of the matter is that Cyprus is
now a member of the Union, and should therefore be recognized as such.
We all understand the historical difficulty of the situation, but the
Turks should also understand that by not engaging a member of the
club, they cannot gain access.

Cyprus, when compared to Turkland is very small in proportion, and
therefore the Turks believe that by dealing with the larger players
and not engaging the Cypriots, they reach their goal. This will have
to change, and Turks will have to start civilized dialogue with the
Cypriots.

Kıbrıs, Türkiye ile kıyaslağında çok küçük bir
yerdir ve dolayısıyla Türkler, Kıbrıslılarla ilişki kurmaksızın, daha

As I said, Turkland’s membership is key. But Turks need to understand
that there is not a set criteria for membership. They need to obtain
the consent of all members. They need to open up, be more active in
the international world, and engage their neighbors to address their
issues. The Turkish diplomacy will need to be more engaging, multi
faceted and will need to focus on PR. We are no longer in an age where
EU governments can dictate changes on their people. Winning the hearts
of the Europeans will bring the membership to the Turks.
