Back to School for Red-Faced
Council --
Mahçub Düşen Belediye için Okula Dönüş (Zamanı)....
Council officials today apologised after misspelling the word "grammar"
on a road sign outside a school. Council workers were called back to
Grammar School Lane, home of Yarm preparatory school, to replace the
recently erected and incorrectly spelt sign.
to misspell
= sözcüğü yanlış yazmak...
to call back =
tekrar/yeniden çağırmak...
home (of, veya, to)
= burada "bulunduğu yer" anlamında. Tabiatıyla, tümcenin gelişine göre
çeşitli anlamlar kazanabilir: "anayurt, rahat ettiğimiz yer, sinesinde
barındıran yer, doğal çevre, vb. vb. gibi...
KURAL: Anlamı çözmek için,
sözlük anlamından yararlanabilirsiniz; fakat herzaman için bağlamdan
(context) gelen anlam kıraldır...

The sign, which read "Grammer School Lane", had been in place for more
than a week, according to the headteacher, Gillian Taylor.
had been
in place
= "yerleştirilmiş bulunuyordu" (orada bulunuyordu / orada olagelmişti)...
But sharp-eyed youngsters at the private school -- for children aged
between four and 11 -- spotted the mistake. Mrs Taylor told the Press
Association: "We thought it must have been April 1, but sadly it
wasn't. The sign was up for quite a number of days and it caused quite
a lot of amusement for children, staff and parents. We saw the sign
and thought 'No, it can't be,' and then you look again just to make
sure. Fortunately the children spotted the mistake quite quickly, but
it must have been a good eight or nine days before the council removed
it." Mrs Taylor added: "If the council wants any help in spelling then
I'm sure the children can help."
sharp-eyed

-- for children aged between four and
eleven

fortunately
= "Allah'tan", iyi ki...
a good eight or nine days
= tamı tamamına / en azından 8-9 gün...
Son tümcedeki "dalga geçme"
tarzı eleştiriye dikkat...
A Stockton council spokesman said: "Our
order for the sign was correct, but the manufacturer slipped up on the
spelling. We do check signs before they go up, but they arrive in
large batches and unfortunately this one slipped through the net. As
soon as we learned of the mistake we contacted the manufacturers, who
have replaced the sign free of charge."

The managing director of the Billingham-based sign manufacturer Select

We are face-to-face with a very bizarre
situation. State Minister for Women and Family Affairs Nimet Çubukçu
has allowed almost all of the women's groups in the country to take a
stance against her. Just before she became minister, she had filed
complaints against women's groups that criticized her opposition to
affirmative action and special quotas for women.

= hemen öncesinde...
to file a complaint against
= suç duyurusunda bulunmak, dava açmak... "that

= "women's groups" tamlamasını niteleyen bir sıfat yantümcesi...
affirmative action
= "pozitif ayrımcılık" (koruyucu/kayırıcı/lehine tutum --
"olumlu bir ayrımcılık"...
After becoming minister, she did not withdraw the complaints and on
top of that has attracted the anger of women's group once again in
recent weeks. The last straw in relations between Çubukçu and women's
groups was an interview last weekend in daily Hürriyet in which
Çubukçu said she had no problems with the women's groups but was “in
court” with “some women.” She had also claimed that nowhere in the
world were there any special quotas for women in political parties'
bylaws or countries' constitutions.

constitution
= anayasa... "Nowhere in
the world" şeklinde başlayan vurgulu son tümcenin devrik tümce tipinde
olduğuna dikkat ediniz.
To tell you the truth, I was very surprised when I read what she had
to say. We all know there are quotas for women in many countries
around the world. They are noted in their political parties' bylaws
and their constitutions. Nepal, Iraq, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia,
Pakistan, Greece, India and many others are in front of us in this
respect.
to tell

what she had to say
= "söylediği şeyler"... ("have" fiili burada, mecburiyet bildirmiyor;
normal anlamında = söyleyecek sözü olmak)...
to be noted
= belirtilmek ("not edilmek" kavramından... Fiilin diğer bir anlamı,
bildiğiniz "dikkati çekmek, farkedilmek" kavramıdır)...
in this respect
= bu açıdan, bu konuda...
I don't think there's another
country in the world that has a minister for women's affairs with
worse relations with women's groups, especially when one considers
the fact that the women of Turkland face problems in education, employment
and many other fields. I can't make sense of a minister for women's
affairs arguing so much, instead of cooperating, with women's groups.

to argue,

= işbirliği yapacağına kavga etmek...
