kısaltmak, kısaltma yapmak [boyca kısaltmak, makasla keserek kısaltmak gibi kavramlar için kullanılmaz]

"Acad." for Academy, "Aug." for August, "Ave." for Avenue, and etc. are examples of common abbreviations.

kidnap [carry away or force to come along (usually a human being) often by violence and not-so-infrequently to extract ransom (=fidye)]

tiksinmek, iğrenmek, nefret etmek

to have an abhorrence of spiders. Everyone abhors a traitor. A proposal that would be abhorred by any sensitive citizen.

abide by

/ı-BAYD-BAİ/

adhere to, not to break (the rules)

kurala uygun davranmak riayet etmek

abide by the rules. [Bu sözcüğün -- "by" ilgeci olmaksızın "ikamet etmek" anlamı da vardır; aklınızın bir köşesinde dursun]

abject

1. contemptible, base, ignoble, worthless, mean; 2. down in spirit or hope, showing hopelessness or resignation; 3. in a humble and often ingratiating (= yaltaklanan) spirit

1. aşağılık, sefil, şerefsiz; 2. ruhen çökkün ve umutsuzluğa batmış, acınacak halde; 3. yalvaran ve yaltaklanan tarzda
